Who would you reach out to first IF Jim leaves for NFL?

With speculation of Jim going back to the NFL yesterday afternoon and this morning...who would be your first call if Jim did leave for a job in the NFL? I think you would have to send a feeler to Sean Payton, Matt Rhule, Lane Kiffin, & Dave Aranda. Also internally have to look at Gattis as well.

Who else would be on your short list of candidates?

There would be no possible way it could be anyone other than an internal candidate at this point.  No way you could get someone in here that quickly.

It would be Gattis.

It ain’t August. Fickell has a small buyout, It sounds like Rhule and Carolina might be okay with a split. We could have a new coach in place before Valentine’s Day. Are we worried about February signing day or something? There was already smoke of this before the bigger signing day in December, and everything went swimmingly. Perhaps Gattis is the guy, but there is still plenty of time to hire outside the program.

My first call would be to find a better AD.  Michigan has its best football season in 25 years, in a tougher era, and we penny-pinch a returning coach who has been to the college playoffs, the Super Bowl, loves the University and was a great player here, etc.  Insane.  Any option available to us (i.e., not Saban, not Swinney, not Smart, not Riley (props to USC - best move of the off-season), not Cristobal, not Kelly, not Franklin, not Day, not Tucker, not Peterson, not Stoops (Bob), not one of the current, successful NFL head coaches, etc.) is a riskier option, and likely a (potentially major) step back.  That Warde will think himself clever by betting on an internal hire who would not be hired as a head coach by any power 5 team....

One name I haven't seen mentioned is Jim Leonhard (Wisconsin DC).  He is a Wisconsin alum and turned down the Packers DC job, so it might be hard to pull him to Michigan.  I assume he would be the first call for UW if Chryst were to retire.  But Chryst is only 56 and has been solid for Wisconsin, so maybe make a run at Leonhard.  Don't know how well he recruits, though.

I’m glad the university didn’t rule out speaking to Buckeyes Bo Schembechler and Gary Moeller about coaching positions. I mean Moeller was a team captain, and I never think of him as anything but a Wolverine. Let’s not pretend like a Buckeye coaching at Michigan is unprecedentedly impossible.

Sean Payton is not coming to college, unless someone here has some insider info I am not sure about.  He will be The cowboys next coach 2023.

I would start in house with Gattis personally.  His awards speech, I don't want to lose that guy.  I have no problem with Kiffin ,and Partirdge possibly coming back with him.  Aranda maybe.  I kind of want harbaugh to just rip the band aid off at this point and go.  If you have not figured out if it is not this year it is coming soon.

He is an Illinois Guy He went to a high school right by the house I grew up in and Eastern Illinois. Word on the street is he is going to take a tv gig for a year, and then possibly take an NFL job next year.  Everyone seems to think the cowboys, but not sure if he wants to do that because of Jerry.

Gattis is my #1.

We just finished the most successful season in nearly 20 years.  Stability is more important than bringing in the next most brilliant mind.  With Gattis, we keep building.  With any outsider, we start over ala Rich Rod.

Campbell comes from Mount Union, it's like Miami (NTM) when Bo and Woody and Ara and all those guys were all there.

Old article, but those Mount duds can coach, create and sustain culture, and win.

I'd prefer JH to stay.  He was my QB when I got there and I served him beers at Charlie's when he was with da Bears.  The only thing he can get in the NFL is time off.  If the jackhammer is worn out it's worth it, but it doesn't seem like it from the outside.  Beat osu again this year and he is King of AA.  Get hired in the NFL only to get fired.

I just don't see him leaving.  His whole family is here and he has a good thing going.  I think he does 3 to 5 more years here and retires.  The program has been very good (not perfect of course - we all wanted more wins against OSU and MSU and other) with him here and it's also very far from awful record wise.  He just firmly beat OSU and won the big 10 and went to the playoffs. He might entertain talks but I just feel he will finish out here and that's it for him coaching. And no I do not have any magical crystal ball.  =)

Ken Dorsey, former Miami qb and current qb coach/passing game coordinator of the bills. Was the qb coach for cam newton when cam won mvp and has developed josh allen into a top 3 qb in the nfl. Modern football you need an elite qb. Him with jj could lead to more future stud recruits like dante moore. No HC experience, but more upside than campbell and rhule imo.
