What if I told you...

Submitted by GRBluefan on January 14th, 2020 at 7:26 AM

...before the season started that...

  • ...a traditional football powerhouse...
  • ...coming off of a 10-3 season...
  • ...and a disappointing 2nd place finish in it's division...
  • ...which had seemingly been passed by it's traditional rival...
  • ...would bring in a new offensive coordinator...
  • ...and completely change its approach to offense...
  • ...and that its senior, transfer quarterback (with Ohio roots) would shatter records...
  • ...by throwing to an array of ultra-talented, but previously under-utilized receivers...
  • ...and that ultimately they would completely overwhelm their opponents on their way to an undefeated National Championship season

Not sure about you, but I would have been pretty excited!

...and then to be extremely disappointed when it turns out to be LSU?

Now pat yourself on your back. You tried way too hard to be cute with this post.

Yes...read this blog over the last 12 months and you would be convinced we had the deepest QB room and depth at RB in the B10.

Then you see Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence and you get to see what a real QB looks like.  You watch Ettienne and Dobbins and see what a real RB looks like.

I guarantee you that if you would go back and read every single one of my posts you will see nothing praising our RB's or QB's.  Milton will never start...and if he does look for 7 wins max.  McCaffrey looks promising but no one knows yet if he can consistently make every throw.  Does look like an athlete though.

It looks like OSU has a prototypical back and I am guessing they know exactly the type they are looking for at other positions as well. It looks like we, on the other hand, have a wide range of recruits who may be plugged in as backs or LBs, or Slot Receivers depending on what happens during the course of camp. I don't know if OSU has a system regarding player type like Bill Walsh and the 49ers did or if that's why they have success but it looks like they are a machine n that regard because their player types look standard from year to year.

QB play was not close to the level of these teams but more than anything our defense wouldn't be able to keep us in these types of games because they give up too many big plays. However LSU was just a juggernaut this year and no defense would have stopped it

So your saying were taking JT Costello and he will throw for 61 td's next year with 31 to Nico and we win the Natty?

Hoke went hard after Burrow, and early.   Makes one wonder had Hoke not picked that staff he was familiar with, and instead hired guys like Warinner, if he'd had made it.  Save OL, he seemed to recruit better than we are now.

Biggest issue with Hoke was having Brandon as an AD constantly micro-managing stuff. His offensive recruiting was very hit or miss, mostly miss at QB, and was not near as good as now. Defensively he was noticeably better though.

It is kind of interesting to think about, what if Hoke had a legit AD and hired a quality modern offensive minded OC and assistants what would've happened.

What if I told you we had a QB that spent more of the summer golfing instead of working with his WRs and new offensive coach, and his team was bad at passing the ball?

Stop comparing our shit show of a team to other teams that got over the hump. We need a new coaching staff for the love of god. That’s the only way anything will change. We are not LSU. Jim Harbaugh is not Dabo swinney. We got embarrassed again in a bowl game that should have been at least competitive. The team is not gonna suddenly improve that much in year 6. We lose so much talent this year. 4 new starters on the oline. It doesn’t matter who the qb is. If we can’t get protection it’s gonna be a long season of turnovers mistakes pain and suffering. Yet some morons will still believe everything is fine

Is LSU a traditional football powerhouse?

They only have 4 national titles (3 of which have come since 2003).  They are 11th in Win % and 12th in overall wins (2019 data excluded because football.stassen hasn't been updated yet). 16 conference titles, and 2 Heisman winners.

As the football demographics shift south they are certainly benefiting, all of their previous 3 coaches have won national titles.

But does that make them a traditional football powerhouse?  I'm not so sure.  They are a football powerhouse currently though, that is not in question.

Why does labeling LSU have to matter?

Like you said, they've won it all three times since 2003.  I'd take that. What fan wouldn't -- only Bama has won it more since 2003.

By the criteria in your post, Michigan is most definitely not a "traditional football powerhouse" either.

What are you talking about.

Michigan has 11 national titles (10 of which are from 1948 or earlier).  We are #1 most wins and probably 2 or 3 in win pct.  Also we have won 42 conference titles (haven't won one in 16 years) and had 3 Heisman winners (haven't had one in 22 years).

We are very much a traditional powerhouse.   What we are not is a current powerhouse.
