What are your thoughts about the amount of "rival" posts on the site?

Submitted by AlbanyBlue on November 20th, 2019 at 12:13 PM

This is in response / support to another poster on the Neck Sharpies post from earlier. Share with me your thoughts about rival fans posting on our site and also the specific use of Urban Meyer on the site.

For myself, I don't think it should be allowed. This is the best Michigan blog that exists, and I think that allowing posts from folks that are clearly fans of OSU, MSU, ND, and PSU makes it less enjoyable. Now many of you may feel differently, but I don't care how eloquent / level-headed / polite, etc they are. They have their own blogs (presumably) and that's where they should post. I find it a bit sad that, on the one hand, some of our regulars welcome these folks, and, on the other hand, that rival fans feel the need to hang out here and post regularly. Talk about being obsessed! You're a rival fan, and you're spending a bunch of time rationally posting with your rivals! Look, I spend time with MSU fans, and I consider some to be my friends, but we really don't sit around and talk about each other's teams -- why would we?

So I say, get 'em out of here. Now, I know it won't happen, because many of us think it's okay that they're here. I just don't. And to amplify, why would they even *want* to hang out here? I could understand rivals coming in for some jabs or trolling, whatever. But to hang out here and have rational takes on a rival board? I just don't get it. Maybe because I'd never spend time at RCMB or 11W or whatever boards PSU and ND have.

And while we're on the topic, why the HELL does Urban feature so prominently on this site? He hates us, he trolls us (green tie on the broadcast last week), etc -- as he should. But for our part, we show his goddamn face in many places on this blog, and there have been many topics about him, in some cases pining for him to be our coach! He fucking hates us, and we put him all over our site. "Well, he's really good at breaking down plays....." As another poster said, lots of folks are good at that. As above, I say, get him off this blog. This is Michigan, and we don't need to be pandering to anything OSU.

What do Michigan fans, OSU fans and MSU fans all have in common?

?

They’re all obsessed with Michigan.

I like most of the stuff NittanyFan and Buckeye Chuck post.  Especially when they give level-headed information about the pulse of their own fanbase.  And the fact they're upfront about their (rival) fandom means there's less deception.

On the other hand, we have trolls like this who conceal their true fandom.  If they go, I won't miss them.

This is laughable.  This blog is nothing but constant obsession with MSU and OSU.  Every other thread is about MSU, Dantonio, Meyer, Young, or Izzo.  I have never seen a blog/forum so obsessed with other schools since the Oregon Ducks 247 page.

A Michigan blog talking about MSU right before and after a game against MSU surprises you... why? Guess what, the week of and following The Game there will be a metric fuck-ton of topics dedicated to the Buckeyes in some way. If that bothers you, get out now.

I don't mind rival fans some of them have some insightful comments.

As far as Urban Meyer I find him to be a helluva analyst have watched a number of his clips breaking down Michigan Xs and Os but I guess I'm not sure specifically what you're getting at about him.

I did think his green tie troll of Michigan fans was funny.

Is this sarcasm?

Urban is currently working as an analyst, sometimes analyzing Michigan. Are you attempting some sort of Fan-wokedom or cancel culture against your rivals?

I want to know what sparties think. I thoroughly enjoy Michigan Monday on the Ozone. I also want the opportunity to point and laugh at their stupidity. Why would I want to act like they don't exist?

Dumb.

as i see it there are only two remedies:

  • fire the proverbial money cannon at this blog itself, so we can create an endowed moderator position that will be like a scholarship fund. whoever has the most mgopoints among the applicants gets top priority and dental benefits.
  • fire an actual cannon at the servers that host this site and never talk about sports again.

I really only want to respond to one part of this OP:

we really don't sit around and talk about each other's teams -- why would we?

Because, like, they're your friends and stuff?

Also if one loves football (or basketball or hockey) why WOULDNT you discuss other teams, games players?  To me it’s interesting to hear about other programs as well.  Of course, I’m Most interested in our own Team, players, program.

Conspiracy theory. A lot of Michigan fans, specifically on social media, are actually OSU and MSU fans. If you removed their names and avatars, and just based it on their posting history/tweets/etc., you wouldn't be able to guess that they support the Wolverines.

"we really don't sit around and talk about each others' teams, why would we?"

oh, i don't know, because we're adults, and the results of a game played by other people that we have, in all likelihood, never actually met is literally one of the least important things in our lives?

but maybe that's just me.
