Virtue Signaling Thread

Submitted by BoHarb on October 20th, 2019 at 10:57 AM

This is a thread to publicly demonstrate what makes you such a good fan and how much you support the team, program, and university, yet also simultaneously castigate others that dare offer an alternative narrative to your top fan perspective.

Last night I realized how bad the calling individual kids out is.  Bell has made plays all year long (lack of targets for WR's) is an issue until last night, but Bell has been there all year and played a great game last night, until one play. Posters call him out like he has been terrible all year, when it's the opposite.

Lol ok.  We get fired up for every other WR dropping a pass, but somehow have this arbitrary moral compass when another gets dropped, and then all of a sudden defend a WR.  He dropped it, plain and simple.  He's on scholarship for a reason.  Big players make big plays, nothing more nothing less.

He wasn't the only one to drop a pass, yet some people place the loss directly on his mistake.  Every play is designed to score or at least gain chunk yards, it only takes one player to make a mistake ending a play.  On each play there is one person (or more) who could be as demonized as bell.  If there was as much outrage on each and every play there wouldn't be a problem here.

Kid feels terrible, let it go.  I suspect even Tom Brady has overthrown a winning touchdown pass.  Let's see how many clutch catches Bell in his career before we label him "not a big player".

Go back and watch all of Bell’s plays last night. Kid can play and is probably our best receiver after the catch. He makes the other guys look slow.

That pass was tough to catch, quick release, thrown hard, and a guy on his back. His mistake was trying to arm catch it rather than with two hands. This play was not why M lost.

The only reaction that is acceptable is to feel for him and want to give him a hug. Bell was one of the principal reasons M was even in a position to tie it with one more catch.

Anybody reacting differently can fuck right off and go root for Bama or OSU for all I care. We don’t need that sort of toxicity.

Where was this empathy when O'Korn was visibly upset and shed tears in the post game presser after the OSU game?  I'm calling out this random virtue signaling by posters, that seemingly have this moral high ground.  Yes, a kid feels terrible.  The worst thing anyone can do is shit on any kid, they're kids.

But there are also players that show up in big moments and make things happen.  There are no Heisman contenders on this team.  Bell is not a Heisman candidate.  Heisman candidates make that catch.  Bell is not a big time player.  That was my point.  That is not shitting on Bell, that is not finding his personal social media account and personally attacking him, that is not kicking someone when they're down.

How many comments have shit on Shea?  Or all of the other previous QBs in years prior?  Where is the "empathy" and virtue signaling there?  This board is hilarious with it's double standard.

Well Hoke had a worse record and team each successive season and was clearly in over his head so it was obvious he had to go. Harbaugh is obviously a good coach, turned things around immediately, has recruited better than Hoke/Rodriguez, and has been competing in a stronger Big Ten conference than his predecessors. Also, he's probably the best we can do right now.

I think this is the main argument that the fire Harbaugh people try to make.

We don't think it automatically means we are starting over the program if we let Harbaugh go.

See Kirby smart.

If we think Harbaugh isn't the guy and we look for a coach before we fire him then the transition could be smooth.

This team is filled with lots of young talent for another good coach to mold.  I don't believe we would be in a situation like when Harbaugh took over after hoke or Rodriguez after Carr.

Harbaugh has done a demonstrably better job than RR or Hoke.

Michigan has struggled in all the areas Harbaugh has been criticized for since 2004. Two Big Ten titles since the 90’s, 3 wins over OSU since the 90’s, and far too many disastrous road performances.

Has everyone forgotten Oregon, Washington, and UCLA already?

At some point fans are going to have tthe acknowledge that these problems extend well beyond Harbaugh.

Hoke and Rodriguez were bad.

After they went to other teams nothing changed.  In my opinion this is a lazy idea to look back at hoke and Rodriguez.  And also a cowardly one.

If you are almost certain your coach won't ever win you meaningful games and compete for the conference title then you don't sit their frozen in fear because of past mistakes.

You roll the dice and take the chance.

Hoke is a good person but showed he isn't capable of being a head coach at the U-M level. His record was 11-2, 8-5, 7-6 and 5-7. As the team became more what he wanted it got worse. When would you be convinced that terminating his contract was appropriate?

We haven't even had a losing season with Harbaugh as coach. The previous 2 coaches had losing records in 3 out of 7 seasons combined.

The idea that he should be fired is madness in my opinion.

Also, Ronnie Bell has been outstanding this season. Yeah, he dropped a game winning pass, and he feels like shit about it. But unlike our other "NFL" wide receivers, I've never seen him jogging on the field or taking a play off.

If the team can put together performances against other top ten teams like they did last night.  Even if they lose.

I have no problem with Harbaugh staying as our coach.

It's when we put up games like we did against Wisconsin,  osu 2018,  army,  mtsu,  and Illinois that make me fed up.

After last night,  I'm more curious to see how the rest of the season plays out.

There's plenty of legitamit reasons to fire him though.  The people believing he's worth his contract are the dumb ones.

He's never beaten a team as the underdog and we have a terrible record against top 15 teams.

If the high point of the season being a close loss to an inferior team due to their own miscues is not enough for you, then find a new team to root for.

Also, if you don’t think Michigan is going to win out, then you clearly think Michigan should never lose no matter what and you are the definition of an entitled fan. DON’T QUIT ON THE TEAM!

Your “fandom” has got you twisted.  I mean it sincerely when I say that if this take is consistent with your inner dialogue you should stay away from college athletic fandom.  We are all disappointed.  Turn off Mike Valenti, read a few pages of a good book and then order some pizza and watch the game next Saturday.  “Indy” and “Playoff” don’t define college football.  Do you remember Henne to Manningham.  We were 7-5 that year.  We weren’t “playing for” anything at that point aside from the game itself and that is one of the all time plays in Michigan history.

Last night was a CLASSIC Big Ten football game and if you have lost the big picture this completely you actually are what is wrong with college athletics.

This team appeared to be in a free fall until last night.  There seemed to be no direction, no fire, no future to be honest.  I have not seen a Michigan team play with that amount of will in a long time.  Probably not since the 2006 OSU game.  I understand that last night was a “loss” taken in a vacuum, but it was a loss that may have given us our program back.  I encourage you to stay with this season, I think it will be much more clear 60 days from now.

Me too.

The one long term issue that I see is that I’m not entirely sure that Brown and Harbaugh are going to ever be cohesive in terms of overall game theory.  Brown’s defenses are spectacular for 90% of the game.  The other 10% cannot be as damaging as it continues to be.  We have seen “solving problems with aggression” for a while now.  It can be really fun.  But I think he needs to start solving some problems with “observation” early in ball games.  Force some field goals in the first quarter.  If he does that we win that game going away.

It could be an illusion though...

You are just hoping it will be good.  Theirs no certainty we won't have another Wisconsin debacle.  Or if we lose against ND the following week have a crappy win against Maryland.

And then a heart breaking loss to state.

may have given us our program back

I think you’re reading waaaaaaaay too much into a close loss to an overrated team. I think Michigan’s offense is just as likely to revert to the team we saw their first 6.63 games of the season than they are to carry over what they did when their backs were against the wall last night and the defense’s game plan against Hamler doesn’t leave me optimistic about what OSU and even ND are going to do to them.

Ham

Then you are delusional. OSU is an all-time great team. They’re better than they were last year. Michigan is not better than they were last year. It would have to be an all-time upset for Michigan to win, and there’s nothing to suggest that they could do it on either side of the ball.

Oh wow--this will really turn out to be a circle jerk thread.

We will hear from all sorts of people who donate thousands, wear UM jammies to work under their three-piece suits to negotiate million dollar deals, know people who know people, work with all sorts of GRADS from all sorts of powerful universities, and OH WOW this will get good.

ALL the important big-wig posters will show up here.

It sounds worse than the daily perspective threads. But it will be a fun read for those of us who like sarcasm and can see through the cacophony of phony all day long.

By the way, I support the university and team by making Michigan pillows and leaving them on the doorsteps of fans all throughout the world.
