Unconfirmed Report: Speight broke a vertebra

Out for the season. Per Diehard: http://www.diehardsport.com/college-football/heres-hearing-wilton-speig… Edit: I realize this story is potentially self referential, but I thought it was board material anyway, since we all don't get a chance to comb through every comment posted. Here's a link to one of umbig11's comments about Speights injury in the forums: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/penn-state-8pm-abc#comment-4658903

Yeah, watch it again, please.  The first thing the DL contacted was Speight's head - hit by the DL's facemask.  That is, by definition, a head to head hit.  In case you haven't heard, head to head hits are considered targeting, and are cause for a 15yd penalty and ejection from the game.  Yes, it was a quick play, but that doesn't matter according tot he rulebook.

Just ask Joe Bolden.

I disagree that it was totally normal. The hit was late (Wilton was already down by contact and the player could have prevented himself from falling down onto his head) and at a dangerous angle. It may not have been completely intentional, but it should have been flagged.

I disagree. Speight is already down and he hasn't left his feet yet. Only after Speight is already down does he then lunge at him. While it's sometimes hard to pull up, he had enough time and room to substantially alter what he was going to do, and chose not to.

Also, it's a "forcible blow to the head or neck area" which should be targeting. As much as we might disagree with a lot of those calls the fact that the guy piling on an *already down* player with a hit directly to the neck is not called is egregious.

Add in some of the activities afterwards (celebrating a dirty hit that you were penalized on) and I don't take the Brohm mentality at its word.

Yes.  And intentionally injuring someone is a complete bullshit response from a person that isn't thinking outside of emotionally induced rage.  The B1G MUST go back and review that play - it was dirty and the refs need to be held accountable for calling it appropriately.

This could have been a life changing injury. Grateful he can move his arms and legs. Football is secondary. Beyond that, with so much emphasis on targeting why won’t the league do something about this hit? As to the current QB situation, any quality time Peters can get this year makes UM even better next year. I’ve always felt UM won’t achieve it’s full potential until the have an experienced QB that was recruited and developed by Harbaugh. As good as Michigan is now they’re still on the rise.

Again, this story was and always has been about player safety, not a reason to complain about stupid BS depth charts.

Once again, the B1G can eat dung.  Dude should've been disciplined for his cheap shot.  Hope Wilton can make a full recovery, regardless of his football future.

In the Indiana game, it seemed pretty obvious that JOK was given a conservative game plan and that Michigan would rely on its defense.  While his pocket presence was bad and his stats were horrible, he did have a big run in the third quarter that kept a scoring drive alive and showcased the scrambling ability.

Get well Speight if indeed this report turns out to be true.

Stay game ready Brandon Peters!

I know this comment doesn't mean shit in the context of adding confirmation, but my sister is a senior at UM. Friend of hers is a team manger and she just told me that he gave her the same info about Speight last week. Fractured vertebra, done for the year. I'm not gonna name drop but there's no reason to make this shit up.

As I’ve said before, feel bad for Wilton both short and long term with this tough injury. Nobody should go through that. With that said, this team had close to zero chance of beating penn and Ohio state with the type of Wilton Speight we have seen this season. I’m also not confident in O’Korn but it’s time to try something new.

Hope he makes a full recovery. I'm no doctor, but depending on the severity of the injury, there are some out there who might even recommend he not play football again. I can't imagine you get too many chances when it comes to injuries to your vertabra. One more injury to that area and the question could shift from "when do I get back on the field" to "when do I get to move my arms and legs again"?

Again, I don't know, but when I hear "vertabra" and "broke" in the same sentence, that's usually major cause for concern. In any case, it's time to see what O'Korn is truly made of.

If true, done for the season.  It's something you can come back from, depending on the fracture.

It's a real bitch though.  I had a compression fracture of L2 & was in a brace for about 4 months.  Back still ain't right, but I can walk so yay for walking!
