A source with knowledge of the agreement says the paperwork is in and Juwan Howard is officially the head coach at Michigan.

Terms are 5 years, salary roughly $2.0-$2.5 million/per year, includes a buyout.

If the numbers are correct, it is interesting to me as well. Thought he would get paid more, but I guess he has never been a head coach before. Plus, maybe Howard is willing to take less to get more to his assistants.

Still, he will be spending a ton of time away from his family and would be ok for him to negotiate for fair compensation for him.  I don't follow coaches pay much so I have no idea on his deal, but I'm sure it's fair.

I didn't realize how much time these coaches invested until Coach Beilein left and the tidbits of info of a college coach were in stories.

So he’s making at minimum like 1.2 million less a year than Beilein.

Time to retain Yak and go get another big time assistant.

I like Yak, but holy shit we are making too much out of retaining him. I would much rather get an offensive minded assistant than retain Yak. In my opinion, he is getting waaaaaaay too much credit for our defense the last two years. Yak may well be a great assistant, but our defense was so much better than any other Beilein defense because we had Simpson, Matthews, and Teske instead of Burke, Stauskas, and Morgan/Horford.

edit: I shouldn’t say I’d rather get an offensive assistant than keep Yak. I would love to keep Yak and get an offensive minded assistant so that we can keep some continuity on staff. If it were one or the other, I’d much rather have Howard, a defensive minded head coach, get an assistant that is amazing at something he isn’t known for

Given Howard's defensive coaching abilities (from everything I've read that's his calling card more or less) I'm fine if Yak leaves and if that's the case I'd prefer to see us getting a more offensive-minded assistant, but to discredit Yak's contributions to our defense the past two years is nuts.

Ever stop to think that it was BECAUSE of Yak's coaching that Simpson, Teske and Matthews were such good defenders.

Of course, Yak helped Simpson, Matthews and Teske reach their potential. But those three have absolutely uncoachable skill sets and defensive athleticism. They deserve a ton of credit, probably the strong majority. All three are elite defenders.

The better argument is what Yak did with a guy like Duncan Robinson.

He also had the #2 defense in the country with Mo Wagner and Duncan Robinson in the starting 5. He improved Donlon's ranking by almost 30 spots. And not only that he's proven to be an outstanding recruiter. Don't think his impact is being overstated one bit.

Agreed. He turned Michigan into a defensive power overnight, and was the driving force in us having such incredible seasons the past two years. If those were standard Beilein defenses, we lose quite a few more games.

I don't see him staying. Just put yourself in Yak's shoes - I don't think you would be pumped about what just happened.

That being said, I think Howard will be able to instill a very good D. But Yak will definitely be missed

Donlon only had one year at the helm and had a major turn around himself, who knows what would have happened year two.

Hes also proven to be a fine recruiter but nowhere near elite. Michigan recruited better under lavall and Bacari. He’s a good assistant coach, he’s not the difference between cratering and succeeding as a program like some are making him out to be.

Pretty hard not to credit Yak for a lot of Jon Teske's defense though.  This is a guy that does not have elite athleticism yet has been coached so well that he's in the right spots and knows exactly how to use his abilities.

Also, Yak had MAAR, Duncan and Wagner (remember, Teske didn't even play that much last season) who were all terrible defenders when he arrived and he turned them into adequate defenders and yet turned Michigan into the third best defensive team in the country.  I don't think you realize how impressive that is.  It is not simply because he had three good defensive players.

And people keep forgetting that he turned Illinois State into the 16th best defensive team in the country after steady improvement from his first to fourth year with them.  Illinois State!  16th best!  And they immediately plummeted to 135th despite returning their two rim protecting bigs (who both experienced a big dip in block percentage after he left).

His track record has all the making of a future star.  He literally could have have done any better in his six years as an assistant.  Talk about hitting your ceiling and going right through it.  It's amazing how quickly people are taking this for granted.
