A source with knowledge of the agreement says the paperwork is in and Juwan Howard is officially the head coach at Michigan.

Terms are 5 years, salary roughly $2.0-$2.5 million/per year, includes a buyout.

Hahahahaha at that contract. Anyone want to defend the athletic department now?? No wonder it was Juwan or Cooley. I could imagine a ton of dial tones happened to that search firm once they inquired.

Not surprised I’m getting negative points it would take a lot for some of you to really examine how the AD runs things. That would require taking off the maize and blue glasses. That contract is a farce if you are trying to get the best coach possible.

Had Stevens or Wright actually been interested, I’m sure Warde would have offered them more than $2 million. And if Juwan had been made one of the highest-paid coaches in the NCAA, I bet you would be complaining that Warde overpaid for a first-time head coach.

I don’t complain about paying top coaches. It’s the nature of the business. It’s how you get a top guy. It’s something I figured Michigan finally figured out. I was wrong.

Yeah cuz Michigan is just going to outspend other multi billion and million dollar enterprises to entice their head coaches right?

Stevens doesn’t like the college game as much as NBA. Wright is Villanova and won’t leave for anything other than the Sixers job. God you’re delusional

I know exactly what the search firm did. I was asking you if you knew what roles they played? I don’t mean to pick on you, but I have seen this mistake made by many the past few weeks. The AD has/had a list. The search firm executes the plan and gets the top candidate in rank order. It’s far from a crap shoot or inquiry.

I’ve tried to tell some of these guys how a search firm works and the benefits of having one but half the guys just talked shit back. They didn’t understand how search firms offer immunity from FOIA, they help organize the search, help with legal documents.

A very very very successful Big 12 AD told me that search firms main role is to do candidate vetting. I.e check if they are interested, organizing logistics of the search process, do some background research all while trying to keep things quiet. They might suggest names, but any AD worth anything is going to have a list of guys they are interested in before they hire the search firm.

Also intersting story on that note, same AD told me he is aware that fans follow flight tracker, and they take that into consideration when keeping things secret.

You really don't know much about anything.

If you think that Warde came up with a number he thought was right for M basketball coach and then reached out to various candidates....on the phone....himself.....you certainly have no experience making any kind of hire.

1. AD and Co. make a list and prioritize.

2. List is vetted by search firm according to agreed upon criteria to be sure no one on the list isn't acceptable for whatever reason, look at obstacles like buyouts, assess what would be the appropriate compensation for each target should they become a possibility, etc.

3. Overtures are made by search firm people via someone connected to the targeted coach to determine interest and possibly identify red flags or issues they are not aware of, if interest is mutual, a conversation is set up, at this point most likely with an agent to talk about basics.

4. If in step three there is still mutual interest, further conversations happen and/or an interview is set up, possibly just an initial phone call to feel things out.

5. Full on interviews take place, more internal discussions about various candidates and compensations, etc.

6. Offer made with basic terms offered and negotiations start...hopefully terms work out in detail and candidate accepts offer.

This is why it takes a while and doesn't just happen in 3 days and it certainly isn't Warde sitting down by a phone.

I'm struck by the fact that he's just the 17th coach in about a century of Michigan basketball.

I mean, it's not Kansas level low number, but it seems low.

All right, don't kill the messenger, but I have already seen some funny stuff.

So, since this is the second time Howard is on the Payroll in Ann Arbor, does this mean he has tenure?

Also, is this five-year contract bigger than the one he had when he played there?

Only passing it on. You know it is coming.

Big, big risk this move. If we're honest, we'd have to admit we were left in the lurch just a bit by Beilein's abrupt departure at this juncture. Doubt anyone great was on the table. This reeks of desperation (i.e. can't find a home run hire, let's go with the guy who has a great name recognition and was a famous player for the program to placate the public).

Could of course turn out well, and he deserves a real chance, but I still think the likely outcomes aren't great here.

The guy was interviewing for NBA head coaching positions; the feeling was it was only a matter of time before he landed a spot; he has worked under some of the best in the business and has a great reputation; he has name recognition and is an immediate draw for recruits.

I agree that we were left in the lurch. Maybe not the most sure-thing we could have locked down were this a couple months ago, but I think it's anything but desperation and far from just placating the fan base. Your take seems overly negative to me.

So how do they introduce Howard?

Technically, he never played for Michigan.  Those years have been erased from history.

Is he just Juwan Howard former Miami assistant coach?

fake hammer, please go post somewhere else.  it is bizarre that you would take so much time to attempt to troll a rival board, and at the same time be so devoid of wit or insight.  you might want a new hobby, say golf or knitting or cornhole competitions, something other than this non-sense.  it is a waste of your life.

Wasn't my top choice, but it quickly ended up making sense in the end, and now that it's official I can't contain my excitement.

Lets do this! And let's keep Yak on the ship with that extra money we didn't put into the contract.
