He was a really great looking high school player who would have been nice to have, but we are fine at QB for the future. With a small class coming up, having another spot for areas of greater need isn't the worst thing.

Seemed like the kid was dialled in for the Wolverines.

Disappointed, but not concerned considering we have Milton already committed... if we didn't have Milton, I'd be much more concerned and disappointed

It might have an impact on the class after if an elite blue chip comes in, but a class inbetween blue chip 5* QB's usually doesn't have much of an impact. I think we're in really good with a few elite 2019 QB's including the #1 QB in the country after signing a blue chip in the 2017 class with a last name of "McCaffrey." Harbaugh will get good talent in regardless. Some kids obviously get scared away by competition or want to start from Day 1, but most will see the benefits of having Harbaugh coach them their whole careers. No worries here.

Besides, we should be happy with the kid who is already committed at QB. Great potential. You have Peters, McCaffery, and now Joe Milton in back to back to back years. Hasn't hurt us yet.

That's what I'm getting at. I think Milton can be as good as anyone after some Harbaugh refinement, so given that there are 3 very good to elite level QB's on roster already, wondering if we'll be able to pull another high level QB despite all the traffic in front of them. My gut says yes but I'm also biased, plus I'm way behind on 2019 recruiting.

...but I'm actually pleased by this news.  Milton has the bigger upside and we are fine at QB as long as Peters and McCaffrey stay.  Most programs have a hard time keeping two 4* QBs on the roster; we're looking at a minimum of three and we seem to be in the hunt with the #1 QB in 2019.

Hopefully Shough becomes the next top 5 QB drafted from the ACC.

It's not a horrible situation in that things could be worse, but it's far from optimal. O'Korn is graduating, and Malzone has tons of transfer chatter. In the (somewhat unlikely) event Speight gets passed up by Peters (or the far more unlikely event that he blossoms into a high NFL draft pick), it would be hard to see him returning too. You could be down to three scholarship-worthy QBS in a hurry. If nothing else, Shough would've been depth.

But that's really only an issue for 2018, and even then only in the event that Speight leaves (and that Malzone leaves too, but I am assuming that piece). How much security does Shough really give us for 2018, when he'd be a true freshman? He'd probably be a better third-stringer than Milton, but by how much? Then in 2019 you'd have Milton with a year of Harbaughing, plus probably another VHT freshman. So then Shough probably finds himself in a pretty similar spot to where Malzone is now: nice for depth, but unlikely to beat out more experienced players (Peters, McCaffrey) for the starting job and with more talented players (Milton, the 2019 guy) nipping at his heels.

I didn't mean depth in terms of actual playing, especially considering Harbargh redshirts QBs as a principle, but you still want as many options as possible to develop at that position. This is especially true given that Milton is a high-variance guy. We're almost certainly taking a second QB in that class, and that QB will almost certainly be a lesser prospect that Shough (yes I know projection). As I said, it's not the worst situation, but I don't think depth chart concerns can be dismissed out of hand, considering we're looking to bring in multiple guys in the first place.

Good luck to the kid.

I'm actually amazed that we'd still be in the hunt for a 4 star type kid in the 2018 class anyway.  As others have noted, it's a high class problem to have, but at some point having a totally stacked depth chart at QB starts to be a liablity for getting additonal top QB propsects.

In Harbaugh I Trust, so I suppose if we want to go after anothe QB in 2018 so be it.  But my hot take is that I agree that maybe with Peters & McCaffrey in the fold, and in the thick of it for some top 2019 talent already, and with limited scholaship #s for 2018 anyway, maybe that spot is better off going to another OL or DL prospect.

Not ours.  Don't mean that to be mean.  As a QB prospect, all things being equal, would you rather play at Michigan in the Big House for Harbaugh or for UNC in who knows what stadium for who knows what coach?  Must have been a playing time guarantee at UNC.

Hope he does well there but we will have gunslingers for the foreseeable future under Harbaugh.  The future remains bright.

Quarterbacks come from everywhere. It's funny that people have this take where they think Michigan is producing or will produce elite quarterbacks regularly. I think Michigan has a better QB coach than almost any other school, but that still doesn't mean it's going to turn every guy into a 1st or 2nd round draft pick. Stanford has good pro-style QBs, and the only one to be drafted highly is Andrew Luck. USC hasn't had great QB production over the past decade or so, even though they had a good run for a few years (Palmer, Leinart, etc.) in the early 2000s.

Rudock was a 6th round pick, it doesn't appear that Speight will be a 1st/2nd round guy, and who knows about Peters, McCaffrey, etc.?

Not terribly surprising. It's a very loaded depth chart ahead of Shough. Speight for one, maybe two more years, then Peters/McCaffery right after him. One of those two will be a star here and play at least 2-3 years. And then competing with another QB in your own class. Someone who I think most people would say has the higher upside.

I would never say Shough would shy away from competition, but he probably also has a much clearer path to the field at UNC. And Fedora can sell the "I just coached the #2 overall pick and he only led my offense for one season."

Best of luck to him.

Not surprised he didn't commit to the good guys. Lots of guys with a lot of years in front of him and not to mention it was clear he broke out at Elite 11.

With that said going cross country to UNC is a shocker. I wouldn't be surprised to see USC/Wash get heavily involved before all is said and done.

I live down here in NC, they have a great campus and very good school. He could have been sold on their only qb is a grad transfer from LSU that has a tough time throwing.

I've seen this kid for years. He's everything anyone could look for in a student athlete representing their University.

UNC is a great school, and a great fit. No disrespect to him at all, but UM was not a fit for him. If he is going to make it to the next level, and I think he can, a place where he has the best chance to be "The Man" early is best for him.

Michigan has the luxury of maintaining a stable of guys like him. That's our new reality. No need to bash this kid. He reminds me of a young Tom Brady. I'm not saying he will have 5 rings, just that I think I see that he has "IT."

With that being said, people who are well paid to know better did not close the deal on him. All the best Tyler! Make your dreams come true!

I think he could have given Milton a run for his money, but we'll never know now. Developmentally he probably was ahead of Milton.

I was never excited at the idea of Shough. Im happy with Milton and am more inteested in other positions. QB is one of our most secure positions

Sidenote: Not that I think we have a chance but I did see an article the other day saying Michigan coaches were reaching out to 5* Justin Fields and he began following them on twitter n shiet. Thatd be noice if they somehow pulled it off
