Ty Wheatley has Begun Following A Bunch of Western MI 'Croots
Saw it on another thread; worth the mention in it's own. Granted it's not so many recruits today as it would have been 3 days ago considering Fleck took a bunch with him! He also just followed Darius Phillips who is the Jabrill Peppers/Jourdan Lewis of WMU!

Would assume "he gone".

(I know ironic with my signature)
Commence your conspiracy theories that Najee was a UM lock until Fleck took the Minn job and Western began sniffing around Wheat!! ;)

WMU may not have contacted him yet? PJ Fleck just got hired yesterday. I think what Wheatley's twitter follows show is that he may be interested in the job and trying to make a play for it. That or Michigan is striking for PWOs?
January 7th, 2017 at 1:41 PM ^
But I bet WMU contacted his agent.
January 7th, 2017 at 1:25 PM ^
PJ Fleck left WMU in a really bad spot by leaving so late. Hiring someone this late in the cycle is going to be difficult for a MAC program. Wheatley is a Michigan native and legend and a good recruiter. He has never been a coordinator before, but that worked out with PJ Fleck.
Personally, I think it is a bad career move for Wheatley, but I can understand why someone would jump at the chance to be a head coach.
January 7th, 2017 at 1:31 PM ^
RB coach (or any position coach) to HC is quite a jump for someone who does not have previous HC or coordinator experience, even if is a step-down in program strenth. I don't buy it.
January 7th, 2017 at 1:40 PM ^
PJ Fleck had never been a coordinator either. In fact, you could make a strong case that Wheatley is way more qualified for the WMU job than Fleck was when he was hired.
Wheatley is a Michigan native, college football star with a long NFL career, and had more NFL and high-level college coaching experience.

if trying to close the deal with a player we don't speak of unless he shows up Monday.
Edit: it just occurred to me how genius it is that Harbaugh himself is a major recruiter rather than delegating it away to assistants and coordinators. Assistant coaches can leave, taking their knowledge, but they aren't going to steal our recruits at the same time.
January 7th, 2017 at 3:37 PM ^
Kinda true but you can't be at a top program and not be heavily involved in recruiting. Those kids are getting attention from other head coaches and you gotta show the love. It's not a task that can be delegated in the same way that play calling can.

I tweeted @ Sam Webb asking him if there is any substantiated info on TW to WMU. He answered 'NO'.

but a different answer could be. There's also still a ways between contacted and hired. We know Minny brought in Miles too.

Thank you!
I hope you're right...we need Wheatley for a few more years.

What in the world does "substantiated" even mean in this context? From Ty's mouth? From Jim's mouth? From Ty's barber's mouth? From Jim's cousin's barber's mouth?
Vague question leads to nearly meaningless answer.

provide evidence to support or prove the truth of."they had found nothing to substantiate the allegations"
Context is Sam Webb's job is recruiting. This hire would affect recruiting. Vague questions from you leads to a nearly meaningless reply from you.

What about Minnesota?
Maybe we are reading this wrong? Fleck is re-recruiting a lot of WMU guys.
January 7th, 2017 at 1:37 PM ^
January 7th, 2017 at 1:42 PM ^
Disagree...he's being a MAC HC in training for quite some time. Now I hope he doesn't leave...but it wouldn't shock me.

Name me 5 coaches who are not already HCs who could recruit Detroit better?
Now name me any other than Wheatley who have NFL experience.
Half the battle is recruiting - see how Fleck had WMU at top of recruiting rankings of MAC. A school like WMU (or CMU, or EMU) should make its bread and butter on Detroit once the top end is picked clean by Big 10 teams. Wheatley has now had 2 years of being under the wing of Harbaugh and seeing how operations work with an elite program manager etc. Now you have to go parallel that in a smaller sense somewhere else but at least you see the blueprint.
Nothing is a sure thing - in the end you have to be a program manager as well but I can't think of too many better fits for WMU in terms of being connected to the Detroit area, being a known commodity to parents, and pedigree and connections.. WMU was garbage for a decade before Fleck. If the worry is not being a coordinator a guy like Ty could go hire an OC with 15 years of experience.
January 7th, 2017 at 3:01 PM ^
having had the best season in their history, some % of their recruits are paddling the canoe to Minnehota, and can expectations be tempered for the new HC.
I would say its always going to be easier to create organization out of chaos than to maintain the status quo. Especially in the multifaceted complex sprinkled with somewhat randomness game of football.

If you think recruiting Detroit is the most important thing you want in a new coach then I see why you would consider him. He is still an unproven recruiter, he has had success at Michigan but almost all of his recruits we also recruited by Harbaugh. It's not like these high school kids remember him playing college ball and will be starstruck.
If I were WMU I would stick with what has worked in the past for successful MAC programs. That is hiring a young high energy guy who is looking to prove himself and provide for his family. Ty is a multimillionaire who rarely shows any emotion. Is he really going to work 100hrs a week?
There are thousands of generic 2 star recruits. Being successful in the MAC is about finding which ones will fit best within your program and being able to develop them better than other MAC schools.
Getting a big name will provide some excitement in the short term for sure, but I think it is a risk WMU doesn't need to take. People in Akron an Athens thought Bowden and Solich would bring MAC titles to their programs and it hasn't worked out like they had hoped.

Wheatley has name recognition with parents is what I said, not kids. What guy are they going to hire with ANY experience who has name recognition with kids? Brady Hoke?
So one 1 hand we laud Ty Wheatley for his 247 recruiting ranking as one of the best in the land... now he is "not proven". Ok.

And I don't think outward emotion is a sign of how hard a worker someone is or their success. Some people do it different ways. Belichik is not an outward emotion guy. Saban is at times but mostly not - those guys are work horses. I think you are mixing what sizzles on TV and maybe to a kid vs what can work for a program. Kyle Whittingham is a hell of a coach with limited resources in the Pac 12 but I don't see a ton of outward emotion.
I have no idea what Ty Wheatley's work ethic is. You do? Is being a multi millionaire a signal you won't have one? Because in that case JH, Saban, Urban, Belichik should be lazy as hell. They aren't. Many people are motivated by passion to succeed. Justin Verlander and Michael Jordan were considered incredible competitors - they didn't get lazy just because they were bazillionaires.
All these hires at these 2nd tier schools are gambles. He is a young guy - I'd always rather take a risk with a younger guy at a school like this than go for the old retreads.

I don't think it that big of a deal. Maybe he just wants to a have a chance for some flyers to join the class in the 11th hour if he swing and miss on bigger name guys. Plus I saw this reported at Bama's site ... I think it is an effort to try and sway Harris. Make him think that his RB coach would be leaving right after he stepped on campus.

Not quite an expert on embedding but he seems intrigued

Wheatley is the antithesis of PJ Fleck's wild, rah-rah style with no coordinator experience. This would be a weird, lazy hire.

Looked at Wheatley's twitter, and he just recently favorited a tweet of him being the HC at WMU. And he just followed a few more Western commits. Sigh, this is a huge loss in my opinion.

Don't know if its been mentioned, but I think Thomas Wilcher, the HC for Cass Tech will take over as RB coach. He mentioned an interest in coaching college, and recruits great in the Detroit area. i would love it.
