Tony Petitti says he and Michigan ‘have moved past the friction’

I guess it's now time to move on since Harbaugh's gone.

Petitti said he and Manuel have moved past the friction and even sat next to each other at a dinner the night before Michigan played Alabama in the CFP semifinal at the Rose Bowl. Petitti called Manuel “one of the leaders in our room.”

What Petitti did to Michigan and Jim was unforgivable. He tried to tarnish the best season that we’ve had in 25 years. And he likely is partially responsible for driving Jim out of college football. Like everyone here, I despise Little Tony. I am also far from impressed with Warde, who has really mismanaged the coaching / modernization side of our athletic department.

That all said, the adult part of me recognizes that, despite our anger and valid dislike of Petitti, we still need to exist as a member of the big ten and the NCAA. That existence is made significantly harder if they are all “out to get us.”  Warde making nice with the commissioner of our conference and mending the relationship is, as much as I hate to admit it, something that was both necessary and practical for our continued success.  It sucks, but that’s reality.

Oh, bullshit.  This didn't start with Harbaugh; this has been going on for decades.  Playing nice-nice for no upside or threat you doesn't get you anything; it just makes you easier to exploit.

You know why powerful rich folks are polite to each other, even if they loathe each other?  Leverage.  First dick who makes a move risks mutually assured destruction.  But the danger needs to be mutual, so they're always shaking hands with both hiding daggers behind their backs.

Manuel does the opposite: promises to not be a threat, not matter how much his employer gets screwed.  Even when he HAS leverage.  It's unilateral disarmament.  He's throwing Michigan under the bus to further his own opportunities, even as he cashes his paychecks.

I’m glad the NCAA President said - in an interview shortly after the NC - that Michigan was the rightful champion.

Of course, the NCAA has nothing to do with the CFP.

Petitti called Manuel “one of the leaders in our room.”

Oh, I'm sure.

This has got good-old-boy's club circle-jerk written all over it.

That dining room's going to need a lot of disinfectant.

The combination of Harbaugh and Michigan was just to much for anyone to handle (SEC, NCAA, BIG10, MSU/OSU) There was something about Harbaugh most casual fans really liked (Cap'n Comeback, Stanford sleighing USC as a program, San Fran brought back from the dead). Once he hit the UM campus it was like he was some evil coach from hell.

Now that he is gone there are no articles warning/scolding Chargers for hiring a cheater. No full court media press that Harbaugh is a stain on the NFL or anything like that? So what is up with the Harbaugh/UM combo where both are fine (outside OSU/MSU) when not together? I just find it strange.

I believe the Big 10 has done, or will do, something for Michigan that we havent heard about, and that UM didnt drop the TRO case because they thought they would lose, but rather as part of a quid pro quo "take this lil 3 game suspension and we'll do XYZ with the NCAA on your behalf."

I'll believe the "quid pro quo" - when I see it.   I appreciate your optimism, but doubt there will be any notable apology or comment.

Regarding the TRO - that's a very interesting question.  And, here's my take.  The suspension was three games.   The court decided not to act on the TRO prior to the Penn State game - so, one game of the suspension was already served.   Which - brings us to (IIRC) the Friday before Maryland when the hearing was originally scheduled.

Michigan had an option - take the next two game suspension and close this issue.  OR - contest it - and risk that the suspension might be reinstated after the Maryland game and go further into the B1G CCG and CFP.   It was a risky approach to take - and, fortunately, it turned out well.

So - the B1G Suspension should be "closed" as time already served.  The early season Covid related suspension - which might be extended to four games - with three games already served - while Michigan develops and submits its response to the Signing Day NOA.

What's left?   The NCAA's conclusion about the alleged advanced scouting - which guideline / rule was supposedly broken is still unclear to me.  So, the B1G may tell the NCAA - "You're going to allow sideline to helmet communications beginning the '24 season - let's just drop this."

This sounds EXACTLY like something Freddy P. Soft would say. Now that I think of it, has anyone ever seen Petiti and Freddy P. Soft at the same time? Makes you think doesn't it?

Now that Harbaugh is gone, I'm sure things are rosier than ever.

But also an obligatory fuck Petitti for suspending Harbaugh while he was en route to the most consequential game of the season (at that point) on a court holiday to kneecap Michigan's options to respond.
