Todd McShay has the Lions drafting C.J. Stroud
December 14th, 2022 at 11:31 AM ^
Ain’t happening. Lions spend both first round picks on D.
December 14th, 2022 at 11:31 AM ^
They better that's the side of the ball that needs improvement
December 14th, 2022 at 12:14 PM ^
Agreed. This made way more sense when Goff was looking awful and Stroud was looking unworldly. Time has proven both to be not quite the case.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:24 PM ^
Yeah, it's pretty difficult to imagine a Lions GM thinking drafting an osu QB that's 0-2 vs Michigan would be a homerun pick!
Obviously Michigan fans would hate him, and the sparty half of Lions Nation wouldn't like him either, because he never beat Michigan!
December 14th, 2022 at 12:33 PM ^
I don't know, I mean I hated Speilman when he was at OSU, but he was really good for the Lions and has been great to the community in Detroit.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:43 PM ^
December 14th, 2022 at 1:45 PM ^
Spielman did beat Michigan once (in 1987, right before the Lions drafted him) and as a linebacker he wasn't the face of Ohio State the way a quarterback would have been.
Having said that, I'd be fine with the Lions drafting Stroud in the first round if I thought Stround was a can't-miss pick. I just don't see it, though. I could see taking him in the third round, though, but he'll likely be gone before then.
He may surprise us and be a decent NFL quarterback, but I don't think it's worth the risk.

No way we have a 4 loss season if he and Messner were on the same team
December 14th, 2022 at 1:26 PM ^
Michigan/Bears fan…I don’t hate Justin Fields. Jay Cutler? You betcha’
December 14th, 2022 at 1:41 PM ^
Fields is not a good passer. It's his running that keeps him from being a disaster. Stroud doesn't have that. He is a pure pocket passer and doesn't want to run at all, probably get injured if he did.
OSU QBs have it too easy. That's why they are typically busts in the NFL.
December 14th, 2022 at 2:56 PM ^
Fields won't be able to keep running at this rate. He better hope his passing game keeps developing or his effectiveness will be short lived.
December 19th, 2022 at 9:43 PM ^
Hard to judge Fields as a passer when the best WRs he has had in the NFL is... Darrell Mooney, 5th round pick from Tulane? Trading for Chase Claypool was considered a huge upgrade for the Bears's receiver corp.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:19 PM ^
But, Hutch would LOVE practice!
December 14th, 2022 at 1:04 PM ^
Comment of the day, maybe week!!!
December 14th, 2022 at 1:01 PM ^
Problem is Stroud isn’t that good under pressure from a cursory glance. Might not fair too well in the NFL.
December 14th, 2022 at 1:39 PM ^
Exactly. Not great at reading defenses and running through his progressions, either.
December 14th, 2022 at 7:32 PM ^
Which is a Goff strength. He might not be much of a runner, but he sees the field well, especially during this last 6 game stretch.
December 14th, 2022 at 1:39 PM ^
stroud will be the typical osu qb in the nfl, for a season and a half..... Can he catch passes? that might buy him another 1/2 season.
December 14th, 2022 at 3:48 PM ^
Bingo. He'd be a terrible first round pick for this reason alone. I might take a chance on him in the 5th or 6th round.
December 14th, 2022 at 4:00 PM ^
OSU offense makes it easy for a QB. Not saying Stroud isn't gifted by any means and often times he shows nice touch on the ball when left to his own devices but under pressure he tends to crumble and precisely to your point: He won't have half that time in the NFL that he does playing for OSU to make decisions. He will be under duress more often than not and especially for a team that might choose him with a high draft pick. No chance he'll land behind an upper echelon o-line.
December 14th, 2022 at 2:07 PM ^
100%. Lions need low-variance picks in the first round.
December 14th, 2022 at 2:32 PM ^
Good thing they have such a strong record of using their first round picks so wisely. /s
charles rogers
aaron gibson
andre ware
gosder cherius
brandon pettogrew
javid best
nick fairly
eric ebron (my favorite. Picked just before the rams picked Aaron Donald)
December 14th, 2022 at 3:53 PM ^
The current front office knows what they are doing as evidenced by the last two drafts
December 14th, 2022 at 4:44 PM ^
And their 2nd round pick as well....
Dream scenario -
Will Anderson - Rams pick (Wow who would have thought this would be the higher pick)
Bryan Breece - Lions pick
Witherspoon in the 2nd round.....
December 14th, 2022 at 5:46 PM ^
Will Anderson then Joey Porter Jr is the ideal first round. Then LB OG with the 2 2nds. TE in the 3rd. Depth the rest of the way.
December 14th, 2022 at 11:31 AM ^
That would be a waste. Nothing against Stroud, but the Lions are ok with Goff. Pieces on the defense would be great.
December 14th, 2022 at 11:37 AM ^
Goff has been more than what everyone expected and he's only 28. QB should just not be an option if he continues!
Will Anderson and Cam Smith with our two first round picks please.
I am on the short list that thinks Stroud will be an excellent NFL QB though.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:00 PM ^
We need the Rams to tank to get Will Anderson or Cam Smith. They're in the #4 spot now, and Chicago (#2) won't be taking a QB.
Stroud feels like Justin Fields, without the speed. Justin Fields, without the speed, is a pretty average QB.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:26 PM ^
Yup, the Rams are playing distressing like they have no intention of tanking.
Obviously they don't get the high pick benefits of it, but also their players seem to be staying in competitive mode. Baker Mayfield anyway...
December 14th, 2022 at 1:08 PM ^
Stroud to me is a much more accurate passer than Fields was, but not by enough to make him a better pro QB than Fields. FWIW I think Fields will actually be a good pro QB, but I dont think the same of Stroud.
Stroud is Dwayne Haskins v2.
December 14th, 2022 at 2:47 PM ^
Chicago needs to work on their O-line, hopefully they do that with that first round pick.
OR trade it to Detroit for the LA pick, and our second round pick, Win -Win 😀
December 14th, 2022 at 3:55 PM ^
Cam smith is gettable. Don’t care about will Anderson, think he’s a bit overrated, would rather have Jalen Carter, Myles Murphy or Brian Bresee over him
December 14th, 2022 at 11:13 PM ^
Seriously? The question was fields accuracy and ability to read coverage. Stroud probably has the most accurate arm in college right now. The kid can toss it around.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:15 PM ^
Fandom aside, Stroud is a above average passer and can run if he has to. Hmm sounds like Goff, so why waste a top 5 pick when we already have one on the roster through 2024 and in his prime?
Totally agree, hope Will and Cam are both available.
December 14th, 2022 at 3:24 PM ^
100% agree. Goff is Stroud with a proven NFL track record. Stick with Goff.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:24 PM ^
If the Lions think Stroud will be an "excellent" NFL QB they should 100% draft him. I don't agree though. He looked great against overmatched teams, but when the rubber hit the road he didn't deliver and was really the main contributing factor to the "OSU is Sawft" meme. There were numerous times he could have took off running against us but elected to throw the ball away or check down for minimal gain.
If you compare him with JJ, JJ never seemed to shy away from contact and at times seemed to actually overly it (much to our collective concern). Stroud, on the other hand, faltered when the game got too physical. Also, he plays in an offense that is meant to make it super easy for the QB and has had four of the best WRs in recent college football memory. Wilson and Olave are competing for NFL offensive rookie of the year. JXN was better than both last year and would have been a top five pick but for his hamstring. MHJ may end up better than all of them. He will not have that luxury in the NFL.
Lastly, his reaction to Michigan this season and last does not give me warm and fuzzy feelings about his leadership qualities. In the NFL, your QB has to be a leader and he seems more like a whiner than a winner. I say his upside is Goff-like, but I'm getting more Joey Harrington Vibes. Lions would be wise to avoid Stroud, and if Carter and Anderson are off the board, should trade back (1st this year and first next year).
The only offensive player the lions should really consider in the first round, IMO, is Bijan Robinson. That kid in this offense would be insane. I would also be ok with taking a flyer on Levis or Richardson with the second first rounder if available, provided Holmes and Campbell believe that they can develop them into something better than Goff. Goff is good enough to win in this league, and win lots if they don't have to break the bank on him.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:50 PM ^
I don’t like the idea of taking a flyer on anyone. Lions have to draft BPA. Love the idea of drafting Bijan. Lions need more explosiveness from running game.
DT is a major need as is CB. One of those have to be the choice with the Rams pick and probably their own as well.
December 14th, 2022 at 2:51 PM ^
Bijan is pretty good but I really think we can get a good RB with our later picks.
The way the Lions have drafted these past couple years I am psyched for the 2023 draft!
December 14th, 2022 at 4:47 PM ^
Blake Corum says hello...
Late 3rd or early 4th is where he is projected. My guess is that Detroit would have to grab him in the 3rd...
December 14th, 2022 at 1:28 PM ^
Lions have draft picks to move and groove; if Anderson or Jalen Carter are available, I say we package a deal!
December 14th, 2022 at 12:08 PM ^
Ok is exactly right. I don't think Goff is good enough to win a Superbowl. He's not keeping the Lions from progressing, but I do think he puts a ceiling on the Lions' potential.
The game has evolved. All of the best QBs now have the ability to improvise and threaten defenses beyond pocket passing. Goff does not offer that.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:14 PM ^
Stroud certainly doesn't offer anything beyond pocket passing either.
I guess the point is that Goff is good enough that the Lions shouldn't spend a first round pick on the best QB available. They can wait for someone they really think can be a future star or at least fits well with how they want to play.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:49 PM ^
Regardless of how hard I try to take off my Michigan fan goggles, I really can't see Stroud as a meaningful upgrade to Goff, and certainly not in the context of what the Lions are today. Goff may put a ceiling on what the Lions can accomplish, but right now they're not at the point where Goff himself is the limiting factor. That time may come in the next couple years, but not right now.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:18 PM ^
Neither does Stroud.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:20 PM ^
Wait - who won the last Super Bowl?!
How many yards rushing did he have again?
December 14th, 2022 at 3:01 PM ^
Stafford won a SB and I don't think he was that good last year.
December 14th, 2022 at 12:55 PM ^
I feel like if you draft Stroud you're drafting a younger version of Goff. Both are tall, accurate passers that don't have much mobility. They can both be put off their spot with a bit of pressure. They have the same strengths and weaknesses. IF they draft a QB, which I don't think they should, it had better be Bryce Young. That's the only QB I want in this years draft.
Give Goff one more season to lock down the job. If he keeps playing at his current level, he keeps it. If not, draft JJ McCarthy next time. :D
December 14th, 2022 at 11:20 PM ^
The team can significantly improve drafting defense and they have cap space. They are set to be very competitive for years. The thing is, is Goff a super bowl caliber QB? He has two years after this year. Then we are ponying up 40 plus million a year for 5 or 6 years, maybe even after next season or even after this if he wants to make an issue about an extension.
Yes he has played well, but still a middle of the league QB. I don't really see him any different than Cousins.
If they could get the franchise QB with mobility they would be set. I don't think stroud is going to be that guy. I do think k he is going to do really well though. Is it Bryce Young? Maybe.
It's a tough call because after this year they will not have a chance to upgrade the QB spot for another 6 years.
