Is there any chance we are at risk of losing J.J. to the portal?

Submitted by jimmyjoeharbaugh on December 2nd, 2021 at 1:00 PM

The Adrian Martinez news reminded me that we have a potential future star in the QB room who doesn't look to have a good shot at QB1 next year given Cade's development and consistency this year.

Are we at all worried he bails to somewhere he can get the starting job?

I hope not, and if this is a dumb board topic, i apologize. It's just that it's carousel season and BPONE never really dies, it just goes into remission, and stuff.

All hail JJ

Yes, he does. He had a 3rd round grade going into the 2000 draft which is what made falling to the sixth so surprising to him.

I don't what to tell you, either you can see "it" or you can't. Buddy, if you can't see McNamara's limitations relating to the NFL that's a you problem.

This is a good point re: COVID eligibility for Cade which makes this even more tricky. Cade is two classes ahead of JJ but with the same amount of eligibility, as you pointed out.

I would think best way to handle a situation like this is obviously you always make good on each and every guy's 4 year scholarship commitment. Once that commitment has been fulfilled, it is up to the coaches as to whether or not they want to bring a guy back on for a 5th or 6th year, or offer him a firm handshake. For the continuity of the program, despite how well Cade has performed in the starters role, it may be time for JJ to take the job if not in '22 than for sure in '23. Keeping Cade in the starters role and maxing out his eligibility probably wreaks havoc on your QB depth chart behind him and for the next few recruiting cycles.

Bottom line, QB depth is going to be pretty fluid for the foreseeable future in college football. Best policy I would imagine is don't over commit to prospects and level expectations with guys on the roster so they know what to expect. Use the portal as best you can when the unexpected happens.

Agreed. JJ will stay for a shot at starting QB next year, but if Cade still has it locked down and stays healthy, then I think he'll look elsewhere post-season because Cade doesn't seem likely to leave early for the NFL. Meanwhile JJ would have tons of interest from top/elite programs and then there's also the NIL x-factor.

We can pay him to stay. NIL changes things. If Michigan really wants to they have enough money and influence from alumni we can buy our way into becoming Alabama. The issue is the schools culture doesn’t align with the sports culture like it does at Bama and OSU.

One of the two will not finish their career at Michigan.  That seems like the obvious call.   Each of these young men deserve to be a starting QB.

To me, the likely scenario is that JJ wins the job next year and Cade serves as the loyal and reliable backup and without complaining or negativity.   Cade then hits the portal and thrives out west somewhere closer to home.

I would not worry too much about it. He is very talented yes, but also...Cade is playing very well and has years left. If JJ cannot beat him out in camp next year that means Cade has taken another leap in terms of development, and in case you have forgotten....Cade just led us to a 11-1 season and B1G Championship game berth, we are in good hands. From a depth perspective it could hurt us if Cade were to be hurt though.

I think it's more of a risk after next season. But only JJ knows the answer to that question.

However, beating Ohio St or winning the BIG or even a NC doesn't guarantee Cade the starting position next season. As utterly ruthless as that may sound. And as great as Cade has been this season, it's not like he's a 4000 yard passer who carries the offense.

We can always get better. At every single position. And if JJ's year of experience and superior physical traits is enough to beat out Cade's proven track record of winning this season than so be it. Personally, I think there is a 50/50 chance that is the case next season.

Not this year.  JH and the staff have done a good job of bringing him along and getting him significant snaps, not just garbage time.  There will be a legitimate battle for the starting job next year IMO.  I think Cade has done enough to warrant it being his until JJ outplays him in meaningful snaps next year, but I think JJ will be given that opportunity.  If JJ is not the starter next season however, there's probably more of a chance he considers his options.

Yes, there's a risk.

Factors in favor of a transfer:

  • Cade has the same eligibility, really knows the offense, and is good at running it. JJ has more physical talent, but it's possible that he never masters the offense the way Cade does. There's an even chance Cade starts next year.
  • Transferring is a logical and reasonable response to a glut of talent at a position. 5* QBs transfer quite a bit and find success.

Factors against transferring:

  • JJ will have a year of experience in the system and an even shot to win the job, this time with a year of prep under his belt.
  • JJ appears to genuinely love Michigan, and was the hot recruiting prospect sticking with the program when it seemed like everyone was jumping ship. There's some loyalty there that appears greater than your average prospect.

It would not shock me, and should not shock us, if the guy who loses the battle for the job next year packs up shop. I like both of the guys a great deal, and I hope that they both stay for at least all of next season even if only for a backup / spot duty role. But nothing is for sure.

Excellent take, and if Haskins is gone, I would think you would have to adjust your offensive scheme knowing you can't just hand it off and get 7 yards against a stacked box. This is where JJ could be in the plans with speedy threats like Corum and Edwards. If Cade is the starter out of the box with no Haskins it will be interesting how it plays out.

It seems weird but it's about how the scheme vs talent works better.

You think the kid doesn't have confidence in himself to win the battle next off-season? It's not like the narrative is that he's for sure buried another year. And the staff has made every effort to start to involve him early where most programs won't use you at all until you're 100% ready.

Although anything is  possible I would be shocked. Harbaugh has done an amazing job getting talented freshman in the game and not just during mop up on duty . In the years past I think Harbaugh stayed very loyal to upperclassmen but since has proven that best man will play.

JJ has been very loyal to Michigan. A highly talented kid that had offers to any school he wanted. After last year's disaster he never even considered going else where. Even with people talking about Harbaugh being on the hot seat . Seems like Harbaugh and company were very transparent with him. The days of promising a recruit the world and not delivering are over.

I'm more interested in an Ohio like QB situation.. Ewer was a Texas commit for a while before a late jump to OSU. Seems to me he's more interested in the right situation for him rather than loyal to a University ( nothing wrong with that)  I see one of those two transferring at some point.

As someone who ranted about not giving this guy enough snaps (stupidly in hindsight). I don't care. I would happily trade all the five star quarterback recruits for this past Saturday.

I think Cade can up his game enough to keep JJ on the sidelines for at least one more year, by this I mean JJ remains what he is today a “situational QB”.  It is my belief that JH will go with Cade next year, especially if he thinks he’s got:

  • Cade-2.0 (More confidence and a little better touch)
  • Haskins-2.5 (Edwards catching like slot receiver with the ability to pound the ball when needed)
  • Corum-1.5 (Better hands)
  • A defense that finds a way to generate above average pass pressure

I'm surprised how many NFL scouts are on this forum. So many people are positive that Cade will never play in the NFL. I, on the other hand, think that when his career is over, he'll be looked at as one of the best QBs ever to come out of the University of Michigan.

See if you can guess who this QB is from the NFL pre-draft scouting report:

--Poor build
--Skinny
--Lacks great physical stature and strength
--Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush
--Lacks a really strong arm
--Can’t drive the ball downfield
--Does not throw a really tight spiral
--System-type player who can get exposed if forced to ad lib
--Gets knocked down easily

Sure sounds like Cade McNamara, doesn't it? This is Tom Brady. What they don't measure is the football IQ and heart. Both of those are off the charts for McNamara.

Please stop comparing Cade to Brady. Those scouting report quotes were hand-picked by Brady himself in a tweet as the most negative amongst the many made in order to motivate him. If you sifted through every scouting report written about any player, you could come up with as long a list of negative quotes.

Brady was 6'4" with a good arm. He was projected as a mid-to-late-round NFL draft pick by almost every scout. He was a in a different category than Cade when it came to NFL potential.

Exactly.  Brady was certainly not a top NFL prospect, but it was a bit of a surprise that he lasted to the 6th round.   He was considered a mid-round talent if I remember.  Probably his horrible combine showing set him back a few rounds.

I am not trying to knock Cade, but he does not have the arm strength that Brady had.  I would compare him far more to Griese (who did well in the NFL).  Knows what he can and can't do, and rarely makes big mistakes.

Why would JJ want to leave.

My guess is that coach Harbaugh told him the situation when he was recruited.

JH:    MERITOCRACY

JJ:     I AM BLESSED TO COMMIT TO MICHIGAN!!!

I think JJ is a bit further along than Matt Cassel. Check out his earning as an NFL pro on the link below.

During his four seasons at USC, Cassel completed 20-of-33 passes for 192 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception.

We're fortunate to have both Cade and JJ. Clearly, both players know that, and they've pretty much said so.

I think it'll work out fine for both players.

I think nowadays in football, teams understand that they need two solid quarterbacks to compete for championships. Because the position takes so much punishment, rarely do you see one Q.B. go an entire season without injury. It may sting a little for a Q.B. to have to wait, especially if he thinks he's better than the guy playing in front of him but I think Michigan will continue to bring both these guys along, with JJ getting closer to half the reps next year. This may keep him content until his time official comes. One thing we know for certain is that Cade doesn't make many mistakes and plays very poised under pressure. We all have seen JJ get rattled and begin to play poorly under pressure. Hopefully JJ knows that and is patient with his development. He should have fun being in college and stay ready because he will get his opportunity.

If he doesn't win the starting job in 2022, then yeah it's probably ok to be afraid of. Cade has no NFL upside so he could be around awhile, he technically is a RS Frosh I believe due to COVID. Maybe JJ sticks around for the whole 2022 season and the following spring ball, but that'd make him a unicorn in the 5* QB world

Now if Cade does beat him out and prove to be legitimately very good and JJ transfers, it might not even be a huge deal. Let's say Cade starts 2 more years, which allows Dante Moore to start as a sophomore with CJ Carr right behind him. That would still be a pretty stacked QB room. Will be interesting to follow the competition next year.
