0-for-2 on their first two trips inside the 2 yard line.
The Philly-special call was stupid.
Not only not going QB sneak the 2nd time, but a quick handoff to a guy brand new to the position was equally as stupid.
ESPN had UM with a 67% chance to win. I bet Michigan wins 2/3 against TCU, with the only way they lose being self-inflicted damage… exactly what we saw today.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:42 PM ^
The OC absolutely refused to acknowledge that TCU’s defense was very fast. Made no adjustments and got pants just like our defense.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
The offense scored 45 points and had two trips inside the 2 where they didn’t get any.
I don’t think the issue was the OCs couldn’t figure out TCU’s defense.
December 31st, 2022 at 9:30 PM ^
Two pick six TD. That was the difference not the offense. The QB play was not champion ship level
January 1st, 2023 at 12:06 AM ^
The offense was responsible for a 28 point swing on bad mistakes.
2 pick sixes
1 fumble with first and a foot
Failed to score with first and goal at the 9
December 31st, 2022 at 11:07 PM ^
Uh there were multiple plays where WRs flat beat the TCU defense for big plays. Speed was not the issue.
December 31st, 2022 at 11:50 PM ^
TEs and RBs frequently missed an assignment. It wasn’t speed.
January 1st, 2023 at 10:10 AM ^
Others have already responded to you, but what? Did we watch different games? We absolutely lit them up on offense, especially in the second half. And our WRs were pretty consistently burning them deep. The OCs aren't responsible for JJ throwing two pretty horrible pick sixes. Hopefully he learns from that, because those were one of the several things that cost us this game. Even if he only throws one pick six we win.
That being said, the OCs are responsible for the dumb trick play to start the game, and handing it off to Mullings when they needed a foot for a TD (although this could also have been Harbaugh's decision).
December 31st, 2022 at 8:04 PM ^
Moore or Weiss has to go.
pay top dollar for a passing game coordinator.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:12 PM ^
Well that's a pretty terrible take, though this loss was self-inflicted for sure. Gave TCU 14 with two pick sixes and took at least three off the board with that stupid trick play. Could argue at least three more with the fumble.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:19 PM ^
I said it all season. Their is no creativity in this scheme. Its run up the middle twice then throw to wrs that are blanketed. Theirs no quick passes, screens, or even run routes.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:23 PM ^
Tell me you don't understand football without telling me you don't understand football.
December 31st, 2022 at 9:36 PM ^
These low insight whiny takes are so exhausting. Whatever you want to call it got us undefeated and to the playoffs. 150+ teams would love to be in our position.
December 31st, 2022 at 11:09 PM ^
I don’t think they’re was even a single series that went that way in this game.
December 31st, 2022 at 9:34 PM ^
You're right. Weiss should go.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:15 PM ^
Bro its Harbaugh offense. The OC is a figurehead.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:22 PM ^
You could be right. I blamed the Coordinator and Schea for not keeping the ball on the read options. But now it is new Coordinator and qb and same results.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:35 PM ^
Many of you are too young or are not from Michigan but Wayne Fontes a Detroit Lions head coach walked through OC after OC. What OC are we on in JH era? 4? 5?
When Fontes had bad years the OC went to the wayside. And he smiled and kept his job. The offense was always the offense.
At some point it's the HC not the OC. I have friends in SF who say this is who JH is, If you dont know who he is, you aren't paying attention.
Nothing is changing on our offense. I dont get the trickery shit today at all. The red zone TD offense was bad all year for a top 5-10 team. We scored a lot of FGs all year. No creativity in the RZ. Running 4 times from the 2 yard line vs Rutgers and clasping hands in celebration says it all.
December 31st, 2022 at 9:39 PM ^
JJ can fly. Why not run to pilon like Bennett just scored now. It's running away from the bulk of the defense and more space on outside. Do that and less of chance a fumbled exchange. And work a pass off it. Over and over. RUN TO PILON.

Moore is a tremendous coach. I can’t say that for sure about Weiss. I think he’s our primary play caller and I think he’s awful at that,
December 31st, 2022 at 9:41 PM ^
You have it backwards. Michigan became formidable the same time Wiess arrived. Look at it.
December 31st, 2022 at 10:26 PM ^
They became great when Moore became OL coach. The QBs still can't read a defense and the WRs can't get open. That's on Weiss.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:30 PM ^
Qb run game. QB run game. QB run game. Where the fuck was it? Brian wrote all season about how it opens up the offense and they basically did nothing. One big scramble. Successful 2 point conversion . Other QB run for 20 yards. Fucking ridiculous they just never went to it. Frankly they were lucky to be that close. A lot of moving the ball was ad lib and get a little lucky or get PI called on broken play.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:33 PM ^
Even more baffling is how they went to the QB run at the end of Q3 and then forgot about it the rest of the way. Yeah, I get that once we were down two scores again you have to pass it (except for the second to last drive apparently, lol), but those two punts between our final TDs were horrible
January 1st, 2023 at 12:17 AM ^
one bad hit or fall and there goes your season.
it's a high-risk, variable reward strategy that you want to minimize and use just enough to affect the defense and get first downs when you absolutely need them.
January 1st, 2023 at 7:33 AM ^
And, in a win-or-go-home game, you take more risks than you'd do ordinarily.
The threat of JJ running the ball was considered a huge factor in how he won the job to start with. I don't understand why they didn't at least show that him keeping on an option was a potential threat, until the 3rd quarter. And if we called an RPO, I didn't see it.
January 2nd, 2023 at 7:38 AM ^
...but the numbers say running is slightly LESS likely to result in QB injury than dropping back.
The idea that running your QB means more QB injury is just not supported by fact.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:53 PM ^
Our extremely talented Sophomore QB played like it. Slung it around plenty well but fumbled twice, threw two fucking awful pick-sixes and took some bad sacks.
December 31st, 2022 at 9:14 PM ^
ding ding ding.
Last year, we didn't have the ceiling to win in the playoffs, but we consistently did not make mistakes. This year, we didn't have the consistency, but man JJ made a lot of costly mistakes. Even so, his higher ceiling almost made up for it.
December 31st, 2022 at 9:06 PM ^
This is the dumbest fucking opinion that could be shared. I wish you hadn’t.
December 31st, 2022 at 9:22 PM ^
McCarthy delivered an incredible passing performance even with the pick-6's. This wasn't intended. TCU did what no other defense accomplished against Michigan's running game and the team responded with a passing game of more than 500 yards. So, spare me the bullsht passing coordinator critique. You don't like the play calls or personnel choices, that's on the staff.
McCarthy played his ass off.
December 31st, 2022 at 9:32 PM ^
Maybe at times but also had a ton of costly mistakes and poor throws. He was okay but not a champion level QB. It’s okay. It is what it is.
January 1st, 2023 at 8:59 AM ^
Sorry, you can't call throwing two pick 6's playing his ass off. . He played well after playing badly
January 1st, 2023 at 10:20 AM ^
Incredible even while gifting the defense two TDs? Sorry, but no. It would be one thing if those picks were fluky tip balls or something, but they were horrific passes straight to the defenders. I remain optimistic that another year will improve his decision-making (and hopefully accuracy).
December 31st, 2022 at 9:42 PM ^
Definitely Weiss. That Philly Special had his fingerprints all over it.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:04 PM ^
Defense that's All I have to say
December 31st, 2022 at 8:04 PM ^
Unprepared.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:04 PM ^
Scored a bunch of points. But also didn’t score when they were right at the goal line. And gave TCU 14 points. Wouldn’t have had to do a lot if they played more sound football. Fundamentals.
January 1st, 2023 at 4:52 PM ^
For me the biggest story was our run game being stymied by TCU getting home on so many run blitzes. Its hard to undestand how TCU was able to deliver free hitters into the backfield so consistently and how we apparently had no answers.
The inability to pick up a few yards on the ground when we needed them seems like it was directly responsible for the red zone issues that cost us two TDs, as well why we were seemingly forced to try to compete with TCU in a shootout instead of trying to lock TCU's offense off the field with a more ball control running game.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:05 PM ^
It’s hard to believe Jim Harbaugh made mobile QBs a thing in the NFL but doesn’t do it in college. On top of that, he did a Pete Carroll impression 3 times on the goal line against a 3-3-5 B12 defense lol.
See y’all next year. I think we know why JD is getting hiccups and why Moore didn’t commit
December 31st, 2022 at 8:20 PM ^
If McCarthy pulls on some of those he goes for 15 instead we get edwards into a brick wall for 2
December 31st, 2022 at 10:21 PM ^
Into a brick wall for 2? How about zero or negative yards. I saw WAY too many tackles for loss. TCU shot the gaps with smart LB play and we had no answer for it even though we had a month to prepare. That was single handedly the biggest disappointment today.
December 31st, 2022 at 11:58 PM ^
Agree. They were what we thought they were
December 31st, 2022 at 8:05 PM ^
Took too long to start throwing the ball on first and second when it was clear they were selling out against the run.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:20 PM ^
And we were still running up the middle well into the 4th. Team/coaches lack self-awareness to a certain extent.
December 31st, 2022 at 8:49 PM ^
It's so tough, though, right? All year people talk about how we pound you down with the run, and it starts to pay off in the fourth quarter. Look at the OSU game. How quickly should we abandon our game plan completely, and concede that their defense against the run is superior to our running game?
(I'm not saying we shouldn't have. But it's not like it's an easy call).
December 31st, 2022 at 9:02 PM ^
Our offensive line was garbage today, period
