Summary of UM Coaching Changes

Submitted by Moleskyn on February 10th, 2022 at 10:24 AM

As the dust is starting to settle from all the changes that have taken place over the past number of weeks, I was thinking through what the current staff looks like compared to last year's. This is better visualized in a table format, but a list will do:

  • 2021 Coaches
    • Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh
    • OC: Josh Gattis
      • QBs: Matt Weiss
      • WRs: Josh Gattis
      • RBs: Mike Hart
      • OL: Sherrone Moore
      • TEs: Jay Harbaugh
    • DC: Mike Macdonald
      • DL: Shaun Nua
      • LBs: George Helow
      • CBs: Steve Clinkscale
      • Safeties: Ron Bellamy
    • Special Teams: Jay Harbaugh
  • 2022 Coaches
    • Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh
    • OC: Sherrone Moore/Matt Weiss
      • QBs: Matt Weiss
      • WRs: Ron Bellamy
      • RBs: Mike Hart
      • OL: Sherrone Moore
      • TEs: Grant Newsome
    • DC: Jesse Minter/Steve Clinkscale
      • DL: Mike Elston
      • LBs: George Helow
      • CBs: Steve Clinkscale
      • Safeties: Ron Bellamy
    • Special Teams: Jay Harbaugh

One thing I'm not real clear on: what does the recruiting staff look like now? I see that Mike Elston is now the recruiting director, but I'm not sure what the roles look like with Courtney Morgan gone, Albery Karchnia in, and Elston's added role.

One of things I absolutely love about this place is when an OP fucks something up, like in this case Bellamy & Jaybaugh, EVERYBODY piles on pointing it out because nobody reads the other comments first before correcting them.

OP -  Creates thread, screws up one detail

Poster 1 - Hey you fucked up that detail

Poster 2 - That one detail, well, you fucked it up

Poster 3 - Overall a good post, thanks.  Oh, and you fucked up a detail

Poster 4 - What a pile of crap, totally disagree and to top it off, you fucked up a detail

Poster 5 - Just wanted to let you know you fucked up a detail, might want to fix that

Poster 6 - He cant fix it.  Original threads are un-editable

Poster 7 - Hey there's a detail there that's fucked up

Female viewpoint: Guys are so harsh to each other (you suck, you're a moron, your take is the worst take of all time, yada, yada, yada). They nitpick the smallest things and call them out, usually insinuating that the instigator is possibly the worst person in the world. I notice it with the males in my house, too -- it's all a big competition, especially when sports opinions come into play. Women don't do this. I would never say to a friend of mine, "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard." Weirdly, I feel somewhat comfortable doing that here (although I rarely do because old habits die hard, but I think it all the time). Not calling mGrowOld or anyone else out here, just noticing a pattern.

Love your post.  I usually assume some of the harsh critiques are a sarcastic stab at the technical quality supporting posts on this blog.

I appreciate MGoBlog and am comfortable working around the technology as required. Taking a hit here is like taking a hit from your brother.

Couple notes:

Jay Harbaugh now coaching ST/Safeties; Sherrone Moore was co-OC last season as well; Clinkscale was Defensive Pass Game Coordinator last season; and Hart has been promoted to Run Game Coordinator/RBs.

Little bit of title inflation? Defensive passing game coordinator? I'm sure it properly describes what Clinkscale is responsible for. But whatever happened to:

Head Coach
Offensive Coordinator
Defensive Coordinator

And that was it. Now, on offense we have two co-coordinators and a running game coordinator! How does that work? I assume it is something more than titles for titles sake.

I'm guessing it has to do with getting more money for them but I've also read in various places at various times that the titles are rather ambiguous.  A co-offensive coordinator could help call plays, could come up with the game plan, could make personnel decisions, all of the above, some of the above, or do something I haven't read about yet.

Don't know what other people think about this group of coaches but looks good to me.  Good for continuity and to build upon last year´s success.  I am very excited about our offense. Hope the defense turns out to be solid enough and we can let the offense & ST take care of the rest.

I like the staff,  not to fleck but appears to be a group that will all row in one direction…sneaky good move is Grant Newsome As TE coach, which I assume puts him on the same track as Sherrone Moore.  Played as OL, began coaching TE moved to OL.  gotta think Grant will be a helping with OL coaching duties like Moore did due to the overlap.

Extremely excited about this group of coaches. Newsome to TEs is severely underrated IMO, and I love the internal hires. Minter was a guy Macdonald wanted, so I like the hire there. Elston to DL and as a recruiter is also huge. Coached 12 guys at ND to the pros I'm pretty sure.

Offense I have to agree. Corum and Edwards out of the backfield, solid group of receivers coming back in Cornelius Johnson, AJ Henning, Mike Sainristil, Andrel Anthony, Roman Wilson, AND we get Ronnie Bell back! Erick All and Schoon come back, and with the Oluwatimi addition we should be in good hands.

Defense I also feel like we will be alright. Turner is a stud in the making, Rod Moore along with RJ Moten at safety, and Colson along with Nikhai Hill-Green at LB. Ends and line will be a little raw, but I like Morris, Upshaw, and McGregor. Plus Mazi Smith is back.

And ST we still got Moody and Robbins. All good there.

Should be a fun year. Go Blue.

I'm expecting a night and day difference in the role and impact of WRs with Ron Bellamy coaching them. Maybe Cornelius Johnson will become the impact player many thought he would be. And I'm thinking Derrius Clemons could be a monster WR. The potential seems to be there.

I'm so-so on Gattis as an OC.  He was very underwhelming the first few years (very much a lack of speed in space, was that being handcuffed by JH?).  Last year was obviously great but who knows how much of that success was because of Harbaugh and Weiss influencing the run game.  I thought the WR room was pretty damn good last year, especially losing their best WR during the first game.  Here's to hoping Bellamy is an even better WR coach and they outperform expectations this year (which are already pretty high, at least for me).

I have high expectations too. 13-0 is possible, with a return to the playoffs.

I think last years offense was Weiss, Hart, and Moore. With a year of their system under the offensive players belt, this seasons offense might score better than last year.

Oh God, the amazing and always increadible new Strength & Conditioning coach.  At every school in the country, whenever a new dude is brought in, it's ALWAYS the same.  New guy is the best thing ever and the team will now SURELY own all 4th quarters thanks to his almost magical abilities to give each player the exact right workout.  And the old guy was clearly a complete buffoon who was beyond incompetent - I mean did you see all our injuries last year?  Those were all on him and his adequated ways of training.

The Barwis years were magical on the blog.  He still operates a gym in Plymouth.  I didn't realize he's working for the Red Wings.
