Staudt on Sports: Pull JJ extra early vs MSU

Submitted by wildbackdunesman on October 16th, 2023 at 4:40 PM

Staudt on sports radio who covers MSU sports just said JJ McCarthy needs to get pulled as early as possible vs MSU...saying he doesn't think MSU will purposefully try to hurt him...but he needs to get yanked ASAP. Said emotions will be high.

I don't trust MSU.

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, and I'm perfectly willing to have my mind changed, but I don't get all the stick that Couch gets around here.

Yes, he's a homer, like 100% of the media that covers MSU. But among those homers, he is one of the more honest and critical of the athletic department from what I've seen. Granted, low bar, but still.

Uhhhhhh, this?

I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly. Did Tom Izzo promise answers? Didn't find that and don't recall.

I mean, if what you want is for Couch to be anti-MSU and constantly hammer away at Izzo, then you're right, he's not that. Like I said, he's a homer. But while most of E.L. was (and still is) up in arms that ESPN would dare question Izzo's and Dantonio's honor, he was at least asking that Izzo answer their questions.

I'm not up to date on my East Lansing sports coverage so I'll take your word on that about his level of institutional impact, but a guy being around a long time doesn't mean everything he says should be treated with reverence.  If he's legitimately concerned a guy might get hurt by MSU players then maybe he should do more about it than go on his weekly radio show and warn UM they should pull their QB early to avoid injury.

Couldn’t agree more.

Ring…ring…

”Hello? Officer, I’d like to report a possible crime this Saturday in Spartan Stadium…..What?….No, no, ON the field…..yeah, during the game…I think one team may try to hurt someone on other team……Yeah, that’s what I said…… No, but……But……..But, sir, I’m a local sportscaster so I think I know what I’m talking about here……....Hello?”

Well, we *should* be pulling JJ whenever it becomes reasonable in any game.  Get the backup(s) as many *meaningful* reps with the offense as we can... just in case we need it later.

I think the staff has been doing this (replacing JJ early) throughout the season.

In the game against Indiana, there were a number of very heads up and effective plays by JJ - three of which included - the "flip" to Donovan, the flea flicker over the middle, and the scramble pass for a TD to Loveland.

Get in.. get it done.. and get out...

There’s a lot in this thread but this one is one of the dumber ones link

it alternates between injure their players, MSU is screwed and should cancel the season, Michigan hasn’t played a team as good as them yet, and then jokes about dr Anderson and canceling the OSU game in 2020

As soon as Michigan gets up 2 possessions, it will quickly spiral out of control. If MSU has shown anything in their 4 losses, its once things start going poorly, their team's mental toughness is paper thin and they go into quit mode. I fully expect Jack Tuttle to be throwing TDs to one of the freshman WR's in the 4th Quarter while JJ is playing cheerleader once again.

If there was every one game I would love to see them go all out, its this game. Run up the score as much as possible, and get the starters out by halftime.

I could easily see MSU players injuring guys during meaningless plays.

I mean MSU injuring guys is a bigger concern of mine by a decent margin then them actually being competitive in the second half. Hopefully UM is aggressive with their playcalling and possibly even throws more than they run against MSU's awful secondary. Need to try and get this game in hand quick so they can get starters out and give MSU less chances to do something dirty. Really the only way this game remains competitive for a long time is if UM is far too run heavy  because MSU's front seven isn't terrible.
