Staudt on Sports: Pull JJ extra early vs MSU
Staudt on sports radio who covers MSU sports just said JJ McCarthy needs to get pulled as early as possible vs MSU...saying he doesn't think MSU will purposefully try to hurt him...but he needs to get yanked ASAP. Said emotions will be high.
I don't trust MSU.

SOMEONE ON SPORTS RADIO SAID SOMETHING
SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT THREAD
POSTED!
now just sit back and enjoy the lively back and forth
October 16th, 2023 at 5:26 PM ^
This isn't Cletus the Sparty who works at Wesco. It's a guy whose livelihood is MSU sports on the radio.
With MSU's reaction to last year's game and their fan bases' general approval of violence, I think it could be a concern.
October 16th, 2023 at 6:27 PM ^
If they don't care about violence, then why did they want sympathy when violence happened on their campus?
October 16th, 2023 at 6:59 PM ^
EDIT: NVM Not worth it
October 16th, 2023 at 7:00 PM ^
You’ve got a point there Franz. Good thing your hat covers it up.
October 16th, 2023 at 7:30 PM ^
Be better.
October 16th, 2023 at 7:47 PM ^
Beyond comprehension.
October 16th, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
I mean, Graham Couch's livelihood is also about MSU sports and I wouldn't take anything he says as particularly important or relevant.
October 16th, 2023 at 9:10 PM ^
Graham Couch is a clown. Tim Staudt has been a fixture in East Lansing sports coverage for over 40 years. As Magic Johnson put it, “In Lansing, Tim Staudt has…{overly long dramatic pause} THE MAGIC SHOW!”
October 16th, 2023 at 9:34 PM ^
I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, and I'm perfectly willing to have my mind changed, but I don't get all the stick that Couch gets around here.
Yes, he's a homer, like 100% of the media that covers MSU. But among those homers, he is one of the more honest and critical of the athletic department from what I've seen. Granted, low bar, but still.
October 16th, 2023 at 9:46 PM ^
Plus Graham Couch lives in constant fear that his fellow Spartans will confuse him for a sofa and burn him alive in the middle of a road. The dude is brave beyond belief to stay in East Lansing.

Link to when he demanded the answers that izzo promised from 2018?
October 17th, 2023 at 12:18 AM ^
Uhhhhhh, this?
I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly. Did Tom Izzo promise answers? Didn't find that and don't recall.
I mean, if what you want is for Couch to be anti-MSU and constantly hammer away at Izzo, then you're right, he's not that. Like I said, he's a homer. But while most of E.L. was (and still is) up in arms that ESPN would dare question Izzo's and Dantonio's honor, he was at least asking that Izzo answer their questions.
October 16th, 2023 at 10:17 PM ^
I'm not up to date on my East Lansing sports coverage so I'll take your word on that about his level of institutional impact, but a guy being around a long time doesn't mean everything he says should be treated with reverence. If he's legitimately concerned a guy might get hurt by MSU players then maybe he should do more about it than go on his weekly radio show and warn UM they should pull their QB early to avoid injury.
October 16th, 2023 at 11:38 PM ^
Couldn’t agree more.
Ring…ring…
”Hello? Officer, I’d like to report a possible crime this Saturday in Spartan Stadium…..What?….No, no, ON the field…..yeah, during the game…I think one team may try to hurt someone on other team……Yeah, that’s what I said…… No, but……But……..But, sir, I’m a local sportscaster so I think I know what I’m talking about here……....Hello?”
October 16th, 2023 at 4:43 PM ^
We do not want a repeat of 1984 - I'm sure coach remembers,
October 16th, 2023 at 8:06 PM ^
You know what I do want a repeat of? The fourth quarter of the 2023 American football match between Rutgers University and the Michigan State Spartans. Such a rich and satisfying display of comeuppance.
October 16th, 2023 at 4:47 PM ^
Well, we *should* be pulling JJ whenever it becomes reasonable in any game. Get the backup(s) as many *meaningful* reps with the offense as we can... just in case we need it later.
October 16th, 2023 at 4:55 PM ^
I think the staff has been doing this (replacing JJ early) throughout the season.
In the game against Indiana, there were a number of very heads up and effective plays by JJ - three of which included - the "flip" to Donovan, the flea flicker over the middle, and the scramble pass for a TD to Loveland.
Get in.. get it done.. and get out...
October 16th, 2023 at 5:00 PM ^
Right. JJ's gotten "yanked" early in every game so far. So, unless the game's competitive, no reason to expect something different Saturday night.
October 16th, 2023 at 6:00 PM ^
We should start Tuttle, just for fun.
The disrespect tears would be delicious.
October 16th, 2023 at 7:05 PM ^
I think Tuttle is good enough to beat most of the Big Ten teams playing in our offense. I'm actually very happy to have him as backup - he was decent at IU but that's a hard place to be successful for any QB.
October 16th, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
Felt like the backup role was a big question mark when this season started. But Tuttle has really put those fears to rest.
October 16th, 2023 at 4:52 PM ^
Surprised he didn't suggest JJ not play at all. Blake also.
October 16th, 2023 at 4:55 PM ^
Michigan's defense might outscore MSU in this game. Michigan could start Tuttle and Hall and win.
October 16th, 2023 at 7:11 PM ^
NM, someone posted the same joke earlier further down.
October 16th, 2023 at 4:58 PM ^
If the no-gloves kid shows up with gloves, that's a tell.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:00 PM ^
A little off-topic, if it seems as though Tim Staudt has been around forever, it's because he has, pretty much: https://lansingsportshalloffame.org/people/tim-staudt/
October 16th, 2023 at 5:06 PM ^
I'm only really familiar with his voice --- not his looks. Back when I head him on Lansing Sports Radio in the early 2000s, I would have guessed him to be 70 years old even then.
Obviously he wasn't, but yes, he's been around awhile.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:38 PM ^
I'm from Lansing,
He's been around since 1970.
October 16th, 2023 at 9:05 PM ^
Can’t believe that Bum’s still around. I’m in my mid-50s and remember Staudt being terrible when I was a kid.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:00 PM ^
I had to go over to RCMB, and yes there are posters advocating for injuring players.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:19 PM ^
Wonder how those posters feel about someone injuring players on the MSU basketball team? Would be a shame if Izzo lost out on his second natty because some thugs took out a couple of his stars.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:21 PM ^
There was a post last week where I basically said I didn't see it when I went through some posts in RCMB. I hopped on it this morning and sure enough there was a person directly advocating to go after JJ's legs. There are some idiots on RCMB.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:42 PM ^
If this O line sees a cheap shot, there will be some Spartan defenders who will be carted off.
Like that punk Panasiuk
October 16th, 2023 at 8:23 PM ^
Since I moved back to Michigan ten years ago, I firmly believe Spartan fans value Michigan loss/misery more than a MSU victory!
October 16th, 2023 at 7:39 PM ^
link please
October 16th, 2023 at 8:05 PM ^
There’s a lot in this thread but this one is one of the dumber ones link
it alternates between injure their players, MSU is screwed and should cancel the season, Michigan hasn’t played a team as good as them yet, and then jokes about dr Anderson and canceling the OSU game in 2020
October 16th, 2023 at 10:26 PM ^
"How might one approach Jale Sex? I would think we take that approach."
The most MSU post ever.
October 16th, 2023 at 10:45 PM ^
Is Jale one of the Sex brothers?
October 17th, 2023 at 4:25 PM ^
They would know.
October 17th, 2023 at 4:25 PM ^
They would know.
October 16th, 2023 at 9:09 PM ^
Actually, to my surprise, most RCMB posters just flat out conceded and wanted no part of attending or watching the game. Maybe a few discussed violence, but mostly pure mockery of their program, which was pretty entertaining.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:02 PM ^
Is this Staudt on Sports anything like Men on Film?
October 17th, 2023 at 9:15 AM ^
Yup--hated it!
October 16th, 2023 at 5:07 PM ^
As soon as Michigan gets up 2 possessions, it will quickly spiral out of control. If MSU has shown anything in their 4 losses, its once things start going poorly, their team's mental toughness is paper thin and they go into quit mode. I fully expect Jack Tuttle to be throwing TDs to one of the freshman WR's in the 4th Quarter while JJ is playing cheerleader once again.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:07 PM ^
If there was every one game I would love to see them go all out, its this game. Run up the score as much as possible, and get the starters out by halftime.
I could easily see MSU players injuring guys during meaningless plays.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:10 PM ^
I mean MSU injuring guys is a bigger concern of mine by a decent margin then them actually being competitive in the second half. Hopefully UM is aggressive with their playcalling and possibly even throws more than they run against MSU's awful secondary. Need to try and get this game in hand quick so they can get starters out and give MSU less chances to do something dirty. Really the only way this game remains competitive for a long time is if UM is far too run heavy because MSU's front seven isn't terrible.
October 16th, 2023 at 5:11 PM ^
They are a DIRTY undisciplined team with a bunch of THUGS
