Spike to grad transfer [LOCKED]

Submitted by mzdmv on

Michigan’s Spike Albrecht told ESPN he was granted his release today and plans to play next season elsewhere as a grad transfer.

MOD EDIT: Alright, we're going to make an editorial decision and just lock this but allow the news and comments to stand. Way too much ridiculous in this thread and I can't in good conscience let it go on. We're better than this. - LSA

Blake didn't fumble the snap because of stupidity.  It was just a mistake made under pressure.  I'm sure you've never done that.  Same with accidently tossing it so an MSU player so he could make a lucky play.  You can't compare it to a calculated decision to let a quality 5th year guy transfer elsewhere.

This seems odd but I guess there just isn't room for him. Always liked the way Spike played. He wasn't afraid to shoot from anywhere on the court.

After hearing the stories about him not being able to walk after games last season, it seems like this isn't a good idea and he should just hang it up. Best of luck to him though.

We're going to find out. I think this isn't a decision based on injury but on Spike wanting to be a starter somewhere instead of coming off the bench in his last year. The injury just compounds it. I don't blame him. I would want as much playing time as possbile in my last year if I wasn't likely to play professional basketball after that.

Basketball is turning into a clusterfuck. Beilein is contemplating bringing in a transfer PG, and he is pushing Spike out? Do I have that correct?

I don't think you understand how this works. Any transfer that he brings in eligible right away or not would still be on scholarship immediately.

John O'Korn was an example of this on the football team this year. He didn't play but was still on scholarship and counted against the 85 cap.

Anyone else doing the same?

We lose useful 5th years like Biefeldt and Spike while sparty trims the fat off the roster in Bess and Clark. The rich get richer and we get stuck in mediocrity.

I highly doubt playing under a different uniform next year was Spike's first choice. For two straight years, Beilein has forced a 5th year senior to leave unnecessarily. And this time it's so much worse! It's one thing to let Bielfeldt leave, but Spike! One of our best players over the past two decades and a fan favorite. How does this happen? Why doens't Beilein just make the necessary room for him? This is absolutely disgusting. Beilein deserves all the shit that will be coming his way over the next year, especially if Spike contributes to a winning team like Bielfeldt did.

"One of our best players over the past two decades..."

Hyperbole much? Wow. I love Spike, but he's not even one of the best players in the past 5 years at Michigan, let alone 10 or 20. I'm sure this has everything to do with the setbacks with injury and less to do with Beilein not wanting him on the team. A 75-80% Spike is good for another school, but not for us. I agree with letting Spike walk more than Bielfeldt because at least Max gave us some needed depth.

Thanks for this post.
I love Spike. But some of the posters here are acting as if he was an all American or even all B1G performer. He was solid but he is not a make or break player for next year. If the season hinges on him coming back next year there are bigger issues to worry about.

He's a proven Big Ten player.   Nothing special, but he can hold his own.

He adds depth to an important position.

It eases the burden on Walton who has shown to wear down after playing so many minutes.

He isn't close to being anything special, but he actually provides positive contributions as opposed to other guys eating up scholarships and doing next to nothing on the court.  That's the issue plenty of people have.

If Beilein thinks Spike can no longer compete at a high level, then he will be doing nothing other than eating up a scholarship that could potentially be used on a grad transfer.

The mass freakout that half the board is having over this defies logic, but I guess the internet's gonna internet.

Look, I don't think he was an All American either.  But he made the offense go.  He was a minus defender (on a team full of them, to be fair,) and not the scorer someone like Burke was (obviously.)  We've had and will have better athletes on this team.  But I can't remember the last point guard we've had that was so good at creating easy finishes or open shots for other players.  This year's team missed LeVert's defense and his ability to create for himself.  But it also went through stretches of hero ball because the passing game died and no one seemed to be able to get an open look.  With a healthy Spike, that's much less of an issue.  There's no question in my mind that if he'd played this season, we'd have won two or three more games at least, and been solidly in the tournament prior to the BTT.

No hyperbole, not a final four team this year (or next year, if he was returning.)  But let's not act like the guy was a two bit role player, either.  He was a spark plug in this offense and we missed him this season.

He gave an interview to the Daily that said Spike broached the idea with Belein because he knew how complicated the scholarship situation was. He wants a free masters (who can blame him) and wants to keep playing while giving Michigan the best chance to succeed. It really doesn't seem like he was forced out the door at all.

Goodness fucking gracious.

I was convinced that he was done for good.  Also he seemed pretty forward with the fact that he didn't want to play somewhere else in one of those late season interviews.

I have tried to remain optimistic on things, but what the fuck is this program doing anymore.

We just seem to have so many stupid decisions over and over.

He wasn't nor is the greatest player ever, but you don't send this type of kid packing.

I hope to god this is some sort of miscommunication and that we still have a chance to keep him if a few players depart via attrition.

This is a disgrace if Spike indeed plays for another school.

What a joke.  When a guy gives everything to the program you find a way to keep him around.  He deserves to play for 4 years, not just get a scholarship for 4 years.

Am I making that up?  Just seems like the rule has been there but people are using it more than before.  This is a good way to relocate and broaden your contacts.

You never know all that goes into it but this one seems OK to me.  Spike was there for the team, even when hurt and possibly while considering a grad transfer as well.
