Spike to grad transfer [LOCKED]

Submitted by mzdmv on

Michigan’s Spike Albrecht told ESPN he was granted his release today and plans to play next season elsewhere as a grad transfer.

MOD EDIT: Alright, we're going to make an editorial decision and just lock this but allow the news and comments to stand. Way too much ridiculous in this thread and I can't in good conscience let it go on. We're better than this. - LSA

The hand-wringing here is insane.  We're talking about a 5'10, 175-pound 3rd string PG with no other major offers and two bad hips.  From these comments, you'd think Beilein just cut the next Steve Nash.

Half this place thinks keeping Max Bielfeldt would have actually changed our record and ignores his numbers were a result of not being the primary big man.  Despite that advantage, his numbers were no better than Donnal.

That doesn't even matter. There's no scholarship for him. I would love to keep him for a 5th year, and I think he would make UM better. But Spike was always supposed to graduate in 4 years using all his eligibility. The injury was unexpected and UM made scholarship promises to other players. Can't push younger people out the door for that. I wish him well. I'm sure Beilein would love to keep him if he could and I'm sure Spike would love to stay if he could.

Was some sort of April fool's joke.

Oh man...I can think of several other dudes who should be used to give up a scholarship before spike. There will always be Louisville I guess.

Look, I get it. We all love Spike. It stinks to think of him playing somewhere else. But come on people.

UM was one schollie over the limit coming into next season, assuming that Spike wasnt coming back because he, you know, medically retired after his fourth year. And now everyone is mad that Beilein didnt clear out two scholarships to get Spike back? Dump two players for one year of a solid to good player who no one is even sure how much he can play since he had two hip surgeries? We just had a whole board post with people up in arms about Dawson and Dukes "medically retiring" and opening up scholarships and if thats okay or not, and here everyone is mad that Beilein didnt dump two players. Hmm.

I get that a lot of posters have made up their mind regarding Beilein. That everything he does with the roster is wrong. But we don't know what all went into this decision. Maybe JB wanted Spike back but Spike wanted more playing time somewhere else. Maybe UM didnt feel like it was a good idea for Spike to play and Spike disagreed. But all of this saying that this is JB's worst decision and the final straw and all of that is a touch ridiculous.
