You've placed your finger on a pretty obvious fact about a lot of these championship matchups--they can be about rearranging the stories to meet the situation on the ground.
December 3rd, 2022 at 5:26 PM ^
Dude, Boo Corrigan or whatever literally came out talking about UM’s upcoming game against Penn State (!) when announcing the seeds last time. He’s fucking moronic. ESPNU full ride did a whole “get yourself together” segment about him being senile. Lol
December 3rd, 2022 at 5:44 PM ^
Are you trying to say they do whatever they want to? I know I would, if I were them.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:14 PM ^
Fat-fingered double post - but if we win tonight, we are all but guaranteed to play against TCU
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:22 PM ^
And if we lose it doesn't change anything. We can still be considered the best of the one-loss teams on the grounds that we have the best win. There's no scenario now that the committee can't spin to avoid a semifinal rematch; the only problem would have been if TCU and Michigan were the only undefeateds standing and they couldn't avoid placing them 1 and 2.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:14 PM ^
No, TCU lost a thriller in overtime on a neutral field. Also, it sure felt like the officials hosed TCU more than once on some critical plays. Meanwhile, Ohio got pantsed by 22 points at their own field.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:54 PM ^
This is exactly why USC should still be in over OSU. One lost their last game by 22, the other won their last game, then lost an extra game to a top 10 team by 23.
It's BS to be penalized for playing an extra game.
December 3rd, 2022 at 5:49 PM ^
OSU should have been ranked 4 after the loss to UM, with USC 5. USC wins the PAC 12 and they jump OSU to 4th, bouncing OSU to 5th. I strongly believe that is what would have happened if the committee was sticking to the top 4 remain the top 4 regardless of the conference championship mantra.
OSU lost to #2 in the regular season, USC lost to Utah in the regular season. OSU has a much better loss and better wins, it’s not hard. There is no case that USC is a better or more deserving team.
December 3rd, 2022 at 6:01 PM ^
I disagree.
Both teams have the same number of wins.
USC has wins over UCLA and ND.
OSU has wins over PSU and ND, and the ND game was closer.
Both teams only lost to one other team.
USC is ranked higher.
OSU lost their last game by 22.
USC lost their last game by 23.
It's also better for college football to eschew rematches.
There is definitely a case for USC, and fory money, it's a much better case.
December 3rd, 2022 at 7:03 PM ^
Stop it, PSU is ranked 8th, UCLA is ranked 17. Better win - OSU
OSU’s in season loss was to #2, USC’s in season loss was to #12. Better loss, OSU
USC wouldn’t have jumped OSU if the committee was not willing to drop them for a loss. I doubt that you really believe that USC is better than OSU. Final ranking are tomorrow, so we don’t have long to wait to see who’s right.
December 3rd, 2022 at 7:29 PM ^
I think the committee wanted to put USC #4 so they could justify letting USC in with a close loss in the CCG.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:15 PM ^
Committee will do what they did last year with UGA and Bama to avoid a rematch. Either keep TCU at 3 or if UGA loses we go to 1 and TCU drops to 4. And then on the off chance we lose, we stay at 2 and TCU stays at 3.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:26 PM ^
This comment should close this post. It's the only reasonable answer. Isn't it, Isn't it?
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:55 PM ^
It's reasonable, but since when is the committee reasonable?
They did that for the beloved SEC, not sure they'll show the B1G the same respect.
December 3rd, 2022 at 5:22 PM ^
If you want the conspiracy theory response, it would be that last year they did so to keep one SEC team from automatically eliminating the other one in the semis. And in this case, they would like it if two B1G teams met up early and one is eliminated, giving Georgia an easier path. There you have it.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:15 PM ^
The CFP committee set a standard last year of avoiding rematches in the semi finals. So it should be guaranteed to be Mich vs TCU and UGA vs oSU. Only thing left to decide is who is 1 and who is 2.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:16 PM ^
Consider the SEC bias. If LSU wins today OSU won't even get in. Alabama's quality loss to LSU will get better and they will pass OSU.
1. Michigan 2. Georgia 3. TCU 4. Alabama. /s
It's likely the committee would seed the teams so a rematch would only happen in the championship game.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:19 PM ^
I actually think this is true, except it will be:
1. UM
2. Georgia
3. TCU
4. LSU
They will argue that the winner of the best conference in the Universe (SEC) should always get in, it's just math.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:17 PM ^
Michigan Ohio State was the most watched game in the last 10 years and the committee now has the opportunity to schedule that game again, my guess is they make that happen.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:24 PM ^
Just because a lot of people tuned in to watch an execution doesn't mean they want to see it re-enacted a month later.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:25 PM ^
The playoff game will draw less viewers though, because it's on New Year's Eve. That's a horrible night for television.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:17 PM ^
Lets just hope Bama loses so they wont be part of any talk to be in the Playoff
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:23 PM ^
What?
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:30 PM ^
Yep. i realized my mistake. For some reason i was thinking Bama was in the SEC championship game today .
December 3rd, 2022 at 5:31 PM ^
Found Boo Corrigan’s Mgoblog account! How will UM play against Penn State today?
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:38 PM ^
I would bet good money that Alabama does not lose today.
December 3rd, 2022 at 5:29 PM ^
Well I will bet that they dont win.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:17 PM ^
Who knows...what a clusterfucked shitshow we got going on
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:19 PM ^
TCU was playing with house money as long as they didn't get blown out, so the strong comeback to force overtime probably kept them in it despite the loss. However, a Georgia loss could make things interesting: that would basically give the Committee an excuse to swap Michigan and Georgia, which means that they can dump TCU without having to rationalize Bama over OSU. Michigan-Bama and Georgia-OSU is the best possible situation TV-wise.
/rampant speculation by some rando on the internet
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:20 PM ^
Agree except they will put LSU in. SEC champ. They could actually bump OSU.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:23 PM ^
That would be a lot of fun. We might even get to see Brian Kelly implode on the sideline.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:25 PM ^
So K State is #10 and was 9-3. Now 10-3.
LSU is #14 and also 9-3.
There is a zero percent chance a 10-3 SEC champ gets in. Bad take.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:25 PM ^
Jesus, no 2 loss team has ever been in the Playoffs so now they're going to include 3-loss LSU. Are you serious? It will be Georgia, Michigan, TCU and OSU
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:19 PM ^
I think they did enough to stay. Their resume is better and the big 12 is better than the big ten so there’s that.
But who knows. I know at least getting it to OT helped them a ton I bet.
December 3rd, 2022 at 5:34 PM ^
Big 12 > Big 10?
Quit drinking and take a nap
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:20 PM ^
We have zero control over who we face. Our team knows this. They are cold-blooded. They do not care.
We have a highly professional coaching staff and an experienced, successful team. My guess is they are eager to play whoever lines up in front of them.
If it's Ohio, it is Ohio. If it's GA, it's GA. If it's TCU, it's TCU.
No fear.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:20 PM ^
Fuck Ohio, USC is still in. No change in polls
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:27 PM ^
December 3rd, 2022 at 6:04 PM ^
This feels like the most reasonable take in this post.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:20 PM ^
Listen, we may not get OSU in the semi, but you can “bet” anything there will be a rematch one way or another. The Game had 17 million viewers. You think a rematch isn’t an absolute dream scenario for the NCAA? Book it! It’s happening, so everyone better start coming to terms with that. Bring ‘em on, I say!
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:37 PM ^
Could be good, Could be bad.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:20 PM ^
There is a chance OSU is not in top 4. But, it doesn't"t matter. OSU has to go through Georgia D. Rematch in first semi would not be preferred by committee
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:39 PM ^
Right right, a rematch wouldn't necessarily pair up the proper competitive programs. If osu gets in and plays their hearts out then so be it. Don't launch them against us though. If we somehow lost then THAT would look conspiracy-like.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:20 PM ^
Nah, i think TCU keeps the 3-seed and the buckeyes get to take a header into the UGA woodchipper.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:21 PM ^
An OT loss guarantees a rematch won’t happen, regardless if UM is 1 or 2.
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:25 PM ^
I'd like to beat Georgia in the finals. I don't care who we beat in the semi-finals, but TCU doesn't seem as good as OSU. I think we beat OSU 3 out of 4 games or more, but it is hard to beat a team twice as TCU just found out. Either way, bring it on!
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:25 PM ^
Georgia wins #1
Michigan wins #2
TCU still #3...OSU #4
December 3rd, 2022 at 4:35 PM ^
I wouldn't be surprised if the committee goes:
1. Georgia
2. Michigan
3. Ohio State
4. Alabama
That way an SEC vs B1G final would be set. Crazy? Not when you consider the OSU and SEC bias in college football.
December 3rd, 2022 at 5:00 PM ^
This just doesn't make sense at all. I have no idea why anyone thinks Alabama is going to magically replace TCU now. TCU has a better record (by 1.5 games) and better wins, plus better metrics. A 3-point loss in OT, to a very good team that they already beat, won't change that.
