Snap Count Depth Chart - Northwestern
The NW game saw two subtle changes. I'm guessing it speaks to how a few people performed in practice during the bye week.
Offense:
- 91 total plays: a new season record
- No back-ups were used on the O-line. Understandable, except Trente Jones has seen his role as a 6th O-lineman disappear over the past two games. Jones is getting in on special teams.
- There were 1.54 TE snaps this week. (i.e. 1 1/2 TE's per play). As a reference here are previous TE snaps of note: Nebraska (1.46), Wisconsin (1.48), Rutgers (1.8), Washington (1.61)
- A.J. Henning got the start but Sainristil got the bulk of the snaps. After NW proved they could contain the edge, there wasn't much left for A.J.
- Daylen Baldwin looked to be struggling. Not sure if it's the ankle or he's still adjusting. Andrel Anthony had almost as many snaps. Roman Wilson must still be working his way back.
Defense:
- Junior Colson got the start over Nikhai Hill-Green. That was new. Hill-Green still got more snaps.
- DJ Turner got the start over Gemon Green but he also had more snaps than Vincent Gray. It would be awesome if Michigan had 3 legit corners.
- MGoBlue says Harrell started, but Ojabo had 41 snaps so his spot on the D-Line is cemented in.
Here's the chart:
And the Freshman:
- Dominick Giudice saw his first action according to MGoBlue but PFF didn't seem to notice as I could not find a snap count.
- Officially burned redshirts after this game: JJ McCarthy, Andrel Anthony, & Rod Moore have now all played in 5 games. J. Colson & D. Edwards have played in every game.
- Next up on the watch list is Ja'Den McBurrows. He's played in 3 games. Greg Crippen is still sitting at 4 games.

Good stuff.
And some really interesting info. Colson and Turner getting starts and serious snaps... over guys who are known quantities and decent contributors, and still got enough snaps that it's unlikely that we have injury issues (unless they've been held out of practice).
That's very promising. Same with Anthony's snaps on the other side. Because that suggests we're seeing talented guys emerge in places where the contributions we were getting were at least ok, so these aren't panic changes.

This is great! Interesting to see Moore slot over to the Dax role. Will be interesting to see who among Paige/Kolesar wins the starting safety spot next year

That was a little different than previous games. Moore has typically been a back up to Moten. I'm guessing this shows a little of the depth issue. Kolesar and Paige are suited to play the two true safety roles. Moore is probably the only one with the skill set close enough to back up Dax currently.

Quinten Johnson was thought to have some of that CB/S tweener to him.

I'm interested to see what Henning and Sanristil will do after this season. I don't see both coming back. I like what they are doing with JJ, but I would prefer he play a whole series over 2 plays here, 1 play there, but getting him in every game is really helpful for the kid I'm sure.

I agree. I would like for JJ to have 50-60 more snaps up to this point. I don't understand why they don't give him more plays to get more game experience. He could have easily played 10 more snaps in 5 of our 7 games.

And let him pass more, not 75% running downs

Why do you think Henning wouldn't come back? He's a second year player and with a little more seasoning he could be a bigger part of the offense next year.

Thanks for the effort here OP. Nice to see Anthony getting those reps a WR. I see him only getting better the more reps he gets.

Anthony is wicked fast, excited for his future.

My theory is they wanted to get some snaps for emerging young guys against a team we could beat. I like seeing it.

Great summary. Technically we started two backups on the O-Line but hopefully that was precautionary. I am disappointed that Baldwin hasn’t blown up, he is older and has the experience but it has not translated and we really need him to dominate. I don’t think we really care about redshirts for our young studs, gotta play them or risk the transfer portal. Turner had a great game which is a bit of a relief. We’ll know more after Sparty!

I loved what I saw from Anthony when watching the game. Thought he looked great. Would love to see more sets of him, Henning, Wilson, and Corum (All speed)

I just want some competent blocking from the receivers as well. I think that is what is limiting Henning. I think Anthony got snaps because Baldwin whiffed on a block where Sanrisil fumbled. We really miss Bell’s blocking in the run game.

A little bit worrisome that no back up OL came in late - it could portend wanting reps for those five together because they are not expecting the starting guards back anytime soon.
As always with such observations - hope I'm entirely, utterly wrong.

I think even if the starting guards are day to day, you want those 5 getting as much practice as possible ahead of what's turned out to be the meat of the schedule.
