Shout out to the Fans

Michigan fans deserve a shout out for packing the stadium today. Last decades worth of home games against OSU have had terrible showing by the Maize and Blue faithful, making the stadium more neutral site/home game atmosphere for OSU. (to be fair, some seasons did have good reasons)

This game, people kept hold of their tickets, and made that stadium the loudest it's ever been. Without that, we'd possibly have had a different result. So thank you Maize and Blue Faithful!

Well, I think the fans were clearly up for it. And that's great to see. But rushing the field gave me mixed emotions for sure. There's a pretty important game next Saturday, and I'd like Michigan to play that with a full roster and no players missing due to positive Covid tests over the course of the week. Sure, they're young and vaccinated, so I'm not that worried about the health outcome, but if enough even just test positive we could either have to forfeit the game or may lose it simply due to depleted numbers.

Edit: I'll eat the down votes now because...happy thoughts only and all that, but if that happened everyone here would be majorly pissed off about it. And I'm aware it was outdoors, but if like 20 guys yell in your face from about a foot away...I'm not sure that matters. And it sure looked like there were 100s of random folks getting pretty up close and personal with much of the team and even the coaches.

Point taken, but the 15 minutes of exposure time are a general guideline assuming a typical interaction, it's not based on the idea that it takes 15 minutes of someone literally right in your face hurling spittle at you which is exactly what happened.

I sure hope the combination of vaccination and great condition of the players will keep them uninfected, but case numbers have been blowing up in Michigan this past week. And it's my understanding that a test result is enough to rule the player out regardless of whether they have symptoms or not.

The Big House was electric. Given the history and importance, this was probably the best game I’ve ever been to (and that includes Braylonfest, Manningham over PSU, and UTL 1 and 2).

It was so glorious not hearing the fucking annoying “o-h, -I-o” chants. Even during their halftime performance of hang on sloopy it was muted. No annoying OSU cheering because Michigan shut. That. Shit. Down.

I was there and our group vowed we are going to lose our voices cheering and all 4 of us did! Never felt so electric at the big house! And for the first time in forever I didn't hear O-H,I-O chant!

The only chant I I heard was “fuck Ohio” and it was glorious. Not 1, we’ll maybe 1 fan sat down the entire game. My son tried and he was quickly reminded to get his ass up. My voice is shot, my feet are still froze, my bad knee hurts like hell and is do it again in a second. Fans showed up and buckeye fans couldn’t have said shit on the way out, even if they had a mouthful of it. The wait in traffic, nothing mattered and I’m still smiling from ear to ear.

The fans that were there were great and loud but  sure still looked like a good amount of red in the stadium based on some of the broadcast shots like a decent amount of tickets still got sold to OSU fans. But could have been misleading because of the angles,  etc as well.

Well, OSU fans do travel well. I’ve been to every Michigan-OSU home game since 2003 and my anecdotal assessment was that there were definitely fewer OSU fans than “normal”. Both from memory and looking at shots on Google, 2017 saw nearly a quarter to a third of the stadium in red. I also feel like I saw way fewer OSU fans before the game than I have before. Previous years I’ve practically run into more OSU fans than Michigan fans just walking outside the stadium.

I’m guessing the red you saw was from tickets sold early in the season or even during the summer, since expectations were quite low at that point.

The 4 in front of us were all (very quiet) Buckeyes, but those seats got sold every game this year. OSU allocated a block of their visitor seats to their band, which was promptly drowned out by Michigan’s band/crowd/DJ/sound system.

In my opinion, this was the least red Michigan Stadium has been in about 10 years of home Games.

A couple of years ago, when Urban Meyer was the FOX analyst, he took a victory lap around the stadium at halftime and you could hear the OSU fans roar.

Yesterday’s game was different.  I think there were fewer OSU fans, but also, the emotional balance by halftime was flipped; it was the people in red who were nervous about the second half.  (Rightly so, as it turned out).

Besides, if some OSU fans hadn’t shown up, we wouldn’t have had the glorious sight of red-clad backs walking up the aisle to exit the stadium well before the clock reached zeroes.

Oh, there was plenty of red there, but that just made it even sweeter if you ask me. I'm sure it was a cold and miserable experience for all of them, and they'll be hearing "Pump It Up" in their sleep for weeks.
