Should we have went for 2?

Submitted by MichiganForever on

The correct football decision was to kick the field goal and play defense. However considering the way the refs were in the books for o$u, and considering how gassed our defense was, I think we shouldve gone for 2, especially once I saw Speight with 2 fingers in the air signaling for 2 to the sideline. I would've been fine leaving the game in our guys hands than allowing the refs to decide the game.

Hindsight is 20/20 but man I think we wouldve got it.

UM had 5 yards in the 4th qtr. Your defense was on the field quite a bit in the 2nd half.the book says kick the pat. It only took osu 2 plays for their 1st td in ot. Statistically osu is one of the better teams in the red zone efficiency as is the UM defense. Your defense looked confused presnap in OT, and a little gassed. I was hoping UM wouldn't go for 2 to be honest. Its definitely amazing what harbaugb has done in just 2 years. Only dropping 2 spots in the polls says it all. Good Luck in your bowl game.

The only way I think UM goes for 2 is if Harbaugh gets on the headset with Drevno and Fisch and makes sure that they have a play at the ready for this scenario.  If not, extend the game.

Though in the moment and obviously now after knowing the outcome, I wish they'd have done it.  But when your offense gains 5 yards in the 4th quarter and Drevno's play calling so effing stupid down the stretch, how much confidence do we have in him calling the right play?  They'd have probably gone "Pepcat" and run it off left guard for no gain.

But damn, the "what if" in my head is if they'd have put Peppers in motion as a decoy and then run between the tackles, would that jet motion have slowed down OSU's linebackers enough to give Smith a chance?

Hopefully soon they'll be going for two like UM did with Henne, Hart, and a dominant OL.  Call two plays, put Henne under center, and let him decide what to do based on the defense.

Here's a newsflash: YESTERDAY IS OVER. Coulda, woulda, shoulda is nothing but speculation and won't stop your crying. How about look forward. We most likely are playing FSU on December 30th. Can we start talking about them now?!

I'll buy that news! If someone wants to vent their frustration, let them. No one wants to read someone venting their frustration about someone who is venting frustration. Probably why no one wants to read this post. I vote only the odd number logical complaints for justice be allowed on the blog.

I wanted the 2pt conversion personally, but I'm not the coach. I think the main reason Harbaugh kicked was because OSU's FG kicker had already missed two. Get them in a 4th and long and they would have been banking on a 30+ yard FG from Shanky McShankerson.

When it sounded like  they were going for two, I was happy for the reasons you mentioned. Though our recievers could have been tackled during the attempt...

Yeah I thought about that. At the time I was hoping we would, but Harbaugh probably made the right call there. Ironically, I thought Dantonio was a fool for going for 2 last week. I think being on the road with the home team having all the momentum, it would have been a decent call but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯... easy to second guess.

Personally, I think going for 2 in a situation like that is warranted when you're a significant underdog and you don't have faith in your D to stop them. I think it would have been a slap in that face to our D to have made that decision.

I was okay with it before they decided to go for one. I get why'd we stay on the field with our defense, but had Harbaugh gone for it and lost, I would have accepted it, knowing we took a shot when we were in control of our destiny.

Not imo.  Our offense had two consecutive possessions at end of first OT and start of second OT,  and a TV timeout in between.  Enough of a blow for defense.  If they call holding on the handful of Jourdan's jersey on the 3rd and 9 run, the incorrect 4th down spot would not have even happened  Our Defense was stout for the first four plays of the second OT despite the 3rd down hold, and had stopped OSU until the OSU fairy spotfather moved the ball forward from where Barrett was down.

To quote a pal of mine, Jim Mora Sr., "Coulda, woulda, shoulda."

If we missed, we'd all be roasting Harbaugh for not taking the extra point and trusting the defense to make a stop. Up until that point, they'd stonewalled Barrett and Co. all day.

This is not 2013 where you're just playing for pride, you've got nothing to lose, and it's clear your defense can't do jack shit to stop OSU. Your conference title and playoff hopes are on the line. You take the XP and tell your defense to go and make one more stop. Just like they've been doing all day.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with going for the win, though on balance I agree with kicking the PAT.

OSU's kicker was struggling, so extending the game allows for the chance of it eventually coming down to a FG try by them.

Michigan's defense was assured some additional time to rest/regroup, since UM would have the ball to start the second OT.

I am normally in the go for 2 camp as well... But in this instance, I think not doing so was the correct call. UofM struggled to make headway in goal to go situations all day. Took several attempts for HP to get in earlier in the game, and had to go for it on 4th down and make an unbelievable throw and catch to score the TD. OSU's defense, while not quite as good or physical as Michigan's, is much faster and with everything bogged down there at the 2, it's not difficult for them close space and make up ground quickly. Also, you're getting the ball right back and coming away with at least 3 points. Your offense aside from the 3 TO's had moved the ball with relative ease all day, so you like your chances to score a TD as well... And had the refs not swallowed yet another flag on a blatant PI, they likely would've done just that. That puts even more pressure on OSU to score a TD, because as the ensuing drive proved, they couldn't have felt great about sending their kicker out there after missing 2 chip shots earlier in the game. And lastly, the defenses performance on that drive helped confirm it was the correct decision. They had them in 3rd and forever yet again, and yet again, the refs ate 2 more flags. A block in the back right behind Samuel as he was about to turn up field, and the aforementioned hold... Which would've set up 3rd and impossible outside of FG range... Wait, that wasn't last... Last was when he didn't break the plain on 4th & 1... You can argue not enough to overturn if you like, but I've seen TD after TD taken away in identical situations. I also think it's telling when the majority of bipartisan fan bases think he didn't get it, along with several Spartan & Buckeye fans agreeing. It sucks, there's nothing that can be done about any of it now, and like many, I think the kids on the field had victory snatched away from them due to circumstances out of their control. I think the refs took the easy way out letting the call "stand", so they could escape that environment in one piece, and I can't say I blame them on that end... But it certainly is a "BITTER" pill to swallow.

Defense was exhausted, which you knew from the first overtime where OSU scored in 2 plays easily. Yes, the spot was awful on the 4th down conversion, but the fact Ohio State got all those yards on 3rd down to make it 4th and 1 was because the defense was so gassed.

They should have gone for the win.

I Think kicking the point, and playing a second OT was the right call. Our offense struggled in short yard situations for much of the game. It took us until 4th and goal to score the last touchdown. I don't think putting it all on 1 play was the correct call. Our offense was getting the ball back anyway, where you have a chance to score again and put pressure on OSU. And if you look at the fact that, we stopped them on 4th & 1 and should've won the game, I think that shows it was the correct call. As far as the refs screwing us, they could've screwed us on the 2 pt attempt also. I'm sure OSU would've just tackled our receivers and the refs would've swallowed their whistles.

Should the refs call a pass interference? Should they actually spot the correctly or pull the chains out on the field and measure? I will never question Jim Harbaugh's decisions.

The Samuels escape on 3rd down of the final series is the play I keep seeing in my dreams. If we wrap him up around the 30 and force #collegekicker to try a 47 yarder, we win.

So, yeah. I'm ok with the xp. But I'd be lying if said that I haven't been imagining a successful 2pt conversion.

It's tempting to say yes, in hindsight. However, OSU would have probably committed a blatant pass interference to stop us - and, naturally, it wouldn't have been called.
