A Short History of Michigan v. Toledo

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on March 13th, 2023 at 6:01 PM

We won't ever talk about the football rivalry, ever, but in basketball, Michigan has a 7-6 lifetime edge on Toledo. You'll find the entire rivalry history here.

The last time we played was during the pandemic season. We were scheduled to play North Carolina State on a Wednesday night in December 2020, but two days before the game, NC State canceled because of COVID. That was on Monday. On Tuesday, Toledo agreed to come to Ann Arbor to fill in. On Wednesday, Dec. 9, the game took place, and freshman Hunter Dickinson scored 18 points to lead us to a 91-71 win.

The last time we met on the hardwood before that was in November of 1983, when Bill Frieder's boys beat Toledo in the season-opener, 55-52. Here's the box score from that game. Leslie Rockymore was on fire!

Sharing an interesting historical anecdote here.  The Toledo War is fairly well known, but less well-known is that, based on the original Northwest Territories Ordinance Line, both modern-day Toledo and modern-day South Bend were once in the Michigan Territory.

The Michigan/Indiana border was supposed to extend westward to the furthest southern point of Lake Michigan.  But that would have left Indiana with barely a (literally only tangential) Great Lakes port.

So Indiana, Michigan and the Federal Government negotiated that getting moved 10 miles north.  Thus: South Bend, Elkhart & Michigan City, Indiana.

I can't look at this without thinking of the RichRod game.

"No really, he'll get 20 catches. Should we defend him?"

"Nah... they have no offense otherwise."

"But we have Steven Threet."

"Oops. Well, still plenty of time."

"And we have Nick Sheridan."

"Oops."

"OK. Let's run the ball up the middle 100 times. They can't stop that."

"Turns out they can, sort-of."

"And the kick is up... no good."

Michigan's only loss to a MAC team - and it was one that went on to finish 3-9 on the season.

Whatever happens tomorrow, there's no erasing that Toledo game.

My friend played on the kick return teams for Toledo that game. He told me he cried in the tunnel as UT walked on the field before the game because he couldn't believe he was going to get to play in the Big House. Though it's a generational embarrassment we lost, and exposed RR as a curmudgeonly redneck piece of shit irredeemably in over his head here, I still respect my friend for playing in that game.

RR was so full of himself when he arrived that this game was sadly predictable. I was at the Illinois game the week before when Juice Williams burned us often, but still felt at 2-3 that we would go 7-5 (losses at PSU and Ohio). This was the game that made me start to think we hired the wrong guy. I still gave him a chance until we had the 2010 crappy stretch in losses at home to MSU and Iowa and at PSU (starting a walk on QB).

Toledo fired the HC after the season. - there's no erasing that Toledo game - that's for sure!

The D was supposed to be pretty solid coming into the season but fell apart as the year went along. The FG kicker was also pretty solid for Lloyd's last team but completely imploded (save the Minnesota game) as the year went along.

RR had no clue how to adapt to UM football culture (yes, he had back biters who also were wrong in how they treated him) - still remember his line - first, you lose by a lot, then you lose by a little, then you win by a little, then you win by a lot. That works when you are rebuilding Illinois or Arizona, but UM should NEVER be losing big to anyone, certainly not often as he did.

Whenever I think of Michigan versus Toledo, I reminisce back to a beautiful Saturday fall morning on the golf course in 2008. The weather was absolutely perfect for the (short) tailgate.

The next day was Sunday.

Unsure what happened in the interim.

oh, that box score.  i played hoops at the ccrb with those guys from time to time:  joubert, rockymore, et al.  proof that hockey players and basketball players can co-exist.

I vaguely remember Antoine Joubert.  He was a really highly regarded player, right?  In today's rankings he would've most likely been like a top 20 national recruit?  My only memories of him is that his performance at Michigan was underwhelming but I have zero context.  I didn't follow Michigan basketball (sort of) closely until 1986/87 and even so I was more football focused.

And I do understand that I can Google him but I prefer the thoughts of the well-rounded Michigan folks on this board over the Google.  To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld -- what was the deal with Antoine Joubert?

I do remember him, and your memories aren't far off. His hype coming out of Detroit Southwestern was huge (Mr. Basketball, averaged 30+ points in his junior and senior seasons, Parade All-American). But his career at Michigan didn't match it. He was a good player, not a great one.

Turned out he got drafted by the Pistons in the 6th Round in 1987. He got waived before the end of the season. He kicked around the CBA for a few years and then went off to play overseas. He played in Europe, Central America, and the Phillippines and was very good, a perennial all-Star averaging over 20 ppg.in many years.

My recollection was that he was too slow for the American/NBA game and not a great defender.

durham, sam is exactly correct.  he was mr. basketball and highly regarded.  i'd guess he was 6' 3" in true height, and he was naturally 'thick', meaning my recollection is that he would have had to really watch his weight his whole life.  he was smart, smooth, fairly strong, not lightning quick and i would also guess he might have been, shall we say, way ahead of his time for medical marijuana?

“Skiles went on to become one of the Big Ten’s all-time great villains, booed in every opposing arena because of his cocky demeanor, not to mention his talent. Example: After Michigan’s pudgy guard Antoine Joubert had guaranteed a win over Michigan State, Skiles walked up to him before tipoff and said, “Show me what you got, fat boy.” And then went out and scored 33 points to lead an MSU victory. He was the Big Ten’s MVP his senior season, when he averaged 27.4 points per game.”

I was in FR orientation summer 1981 when Eric Turner and Leslie Rockymore were also incoming FR and were in the same orientation week I was in. Remember them putting on a show at a nearby court.

As for Joubert, he was one of the most hyped Michigan HS players since Magic. He had The Judge nickname in HS and was so happy when he picked UM. The guy had a decent career but nowhere near the hype. His conditioning was bad. If only Bill had convinced him to lose 10-20 pounds, he could have been a bigger star. I was at the 1986 game in A2 where Skiles blew past him - Joubert had guaranteed a victory after Skiles list us up for about 40 points in a loss at MSU.

Manny Harris, another hyped recruit, reminded me of The Judge when he played decent but never to the hype under JB.

I was a JR when that 1983 game was played, but have no memory of that one. The only hoops game I remember was the 1981 NIT game in March. The game drew a pretty big crowd as Toledo fans came up - I don't remember if it was televised locally in Detroit but was able to watch it (with some static) on one of the Toledo stations. The 1981 team was Frieder's first team.

Toledo's Epperson was a one-man team that day in 1983 with over half their points and over half their rebounds. Tarpley was only a SOPH and was still getting his game into shape. Looks like he and McCormick got dominated. Thanks goodness for the guards.

My son played homeschool basketball a few years ago ... one of the guys on the team was Luke Maranka who got a scholarship to Toledo... wondering if he’s still on team probably a senior... I know I’ll find out in the review
