Shitty ass endings to both major sports negbang

Overall good not great seasons by both, just sad both are going to end with such a bad taste in your mouth.

Ignoring the painful details and missed opportunities, this was a good season. It only takes one bad game to end your season. We probably woulda got wrecked by Gonzaga in two days anyway.

With even modest improvements and development (and we often get quite big improvements...though admittedly nobody greatly improved this year) we should be at least as good next year.

um, nobody greatly improved?  are you kidding?  teske went from nowhere to an important player on both ends.  livers contributed every night. jordan poole went from once-in-a-while player to critical starter (go check out how many nights he had <10minutes played in 2018, if you don’t believe me).

zavier simpson made all-conference, for god’s sake, but we all saw THAT coming.  obviously.

The difference: Beilein's track record at Michigan suggests that whatever it was that kept us from getting over the hump this year, he'll fix it. And the fact that we could potentially return everyone sets us up for a big bounce-back year.

We still need some pure shooters.  The three point shot defines college basketball.

We tend to under-value players like Duncan Robinson who just hang out in the corner and wait to be fed the ball for a three, because their game isn't flashy.

But their presence changes the way teams have to defend you

None of our current starting five are going to be that guy.

MichiganStan

March 29th, 2019 at 2:23 AM ^

Iggy and Livers were 40% 3pt shooters. Poole was 37%. Teske being at 30% is solid for a big man. If he can get that up to 35%-ish thatd be great

We'll have good CONSISTENT 3pt shooting next year.

Im betting next season Poole takes the leap we all thought he would take this year to becoming an elite scorer

LOL "More of this". Oh you mean more 30 win seasons? OH THE HUMANITY!

You act as if Beileins recruiting is bad and that his tenure has been a failure. Michigan fans cant praise Beilein for being a clean coach but then also trash him for not getting a bunch of 5 stars. You cant have both in college basketball

Incoming class is Jalen Wilson and Cole Bajema. Two knockdown shooting wings. Were fine in the recruiting department

The only thing that's mind boggling to me is why the fuck the Wings keep winning. So long top draft pick...

I saw this year as a problem with consistency with our players. Poole would be terrible for three games, then show up against the likes of UNC and we would run them out of the gym. It seemed a lot like when Poole went, this team went. When he didn't we didn't. Iggy has many of the same issues. On again and off again. It just felt like we could never all show up together except for those rare moments.

Iggy and Poole should both return to fix this consistency issue. I hope one of them becomes the guy to run through on a regular basis. A closer at the end of games to hit big shots when we need it. You know those droughts we find ourselves in way too often? Someone that can create and stop those.

I expect Teske to shoot at a higher clip from 3 to stretch the floor next year and some of the young guys to step up.

Still, I have never seen that look on Coach Bs face since being here in Ann Arbor. Tough to watch. I do hope this humbles Poole and Iggy. I think they had too much swag for a team that did not achieve many of their goals.

Go blue always!

I agree , not so much tonights game , but "THREE" losses to MSU when it all counted ,that was the end of the Michigan sports year for me , and of course the "TWO" football blowouts at the end of the season , well , its over

MSU was, for whatever reason, a bad matchup for us this year. Just like we were a bad matchup for them last year when we swept them. I'm not as doom and gloom about those three losses as some of the rest of us are. The hardwood rivalry has really gone back and forth, so the pendulum has a very good chance of swinging back the other way next season, with how much Michigan should have coming back.

It's the OSU football side of things where I'm really the pessimistic cynic. That's the one where I wonder if we will ever even get close to winning that game in the next 15-20 years.

Holy shit this forums game threads are toxic cesspools. Coming into the season I believe they were ranked 17th in the AP Poll. Lost Mo, Duncan, and MAAR. Started the season 17-0. Won 30 games (Back to back 30 win seasons ya spoiled asses). We were blessed with a stud Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Typically our teams have had to turn it on in order to even secure a tournament bid. This year we had it locked up by the end of December so that was nice.

If we were honest with ourselves entering the tourney a championship was out of the realms of possibility. Elite 8 was the ceiling for this team. This tourney run was ALWAYS going to end in a poor shooting night so you shouldn't have been caught off guard

This team will return strong as ever next year. We should only lose Matthews as I don't think Iggy will get a 1st round grade. This loss should fuel some fire in Simpson and Teske. Poole will certainly be working on his shooting to become more consistent. Next year will be epic

Agreed, this loss is going to light a fire into these players for next year. Excited to see how the kids develop. I think Castleton is going to be a regular in the rotation and will be fun to see how Johns, Wilson, and Bajema do next year as well.

Despite the naysayers, the future is bright..

Outside of a short run against Purdue, Villanova, and UNC this was an obviously flawed team all season.  They made the Sweet 16.  It’s ok to be upset about losing, but damn... that’s a pretty good season.

The program was DEAD before Beilein came here.  He led the team to it’s first tourney appearance in 11 years, first Big Ten title in 26 years, first BTT title in 9 years, and two Sweet 16’s, an Elite 8, and two Finals appearances in in the last six years.  Every school in the country would trade us for that run except Duke, UNC, Villanova, Kentucky, UConn, and Louisville.  Oh, and he did it in a way that you never have to worry for a second that we might be implicated in a scandal.

If you’re talking shit about Beilein, grow up.  If you can’t appreciate anything short of a championship, well I’ve been there and it’s more fun on the other side.

Cant have your leader score 0 pts , get 1 assist to 4 turnovers , and your 7-1 big get ya 4 points ! I didn’t expect the lack of development out of our freshman class ! We must find a big that can score

Maybe we need focus a little more on the offense. We have a point guard who can’t shoot. We have a 7 footer who has no moves if you throw him the ball down low.  Everybody is back except Matthews I’m not sure if that is a good thing. Last years recruiting class was Beilein’s best.  But we got nothing from them other than Iggy. So we will need somebody to step up and make some shots when needed.

A 30 win season during a year many thought would be a rebuild, a 2 seed, a third consecutive Sweet 16 appearance (where many of you all said this is Michigan’s ceiling and if we get there, you’re happy).

I mean yeah, I’m bummed we lost too. But I’m already over it. Minus Matthews, I think everyone is coming back next year, so we should be even better. Especially with Jalen Wilson joining the fold.

We need a few guys to turn into better shooters next year. Other than that it was an ugly ass game but good season. We weren't even ranked in preseason. Had a lot of questions to answer after we lost MAAR, Moe, and Duncan. We will be better next year. Go blue!

God, I love this board sometimes.

It's the NCAA Tournament. Sometimes, you have a bad game and this shit happens.

Let's look at our main rival who had two lottery picks on their team last year, got swept by their rival, and meekly lost before the Sweet 16.

They went 30-7 and got a #2 seed and made the Sweet 16 again.

It was a good year that ended with an awful performance.

Winning is fun and losing sucks. There is only one champion at the end and all the rest are losers.  Great effort by a team that way overachieved!  Life goes on folks.

This was frustrating because for many years we relied too heavily on the 3pt shot.  We didn't have a true big man who was a scoring threat in the paint, we didn't have athletes who were threats to take the ball to the hoop.

This year, we had all that, but for some reason couldn't use it when it was most needed.

As much as I appreciate Z, I'm not sold that he's the leader that he's made out to be.  Coach can coach til he's blue in the face, but the guys on the floor have to execute and clearly that's where things went wrong.  Z doesn't have the offensive ability to be a spark when we need it. Clearly Iggy does, Matthews has shown glimpses, Poole has had his moments, but none of them were leaders enough to take the ball and score when we're shooting 0/12 from the outside.

Hopefully a sophomore Iggy takes on that role.  Maybe Brooks has the second season jump that Z had.   There are still plenty of talented players on this roster, there's no reason why next year can't be better than this year.  Improving on a 30-7 season...I'll take it.

True point guards are rarely scorers.  True point guards play outstanding defense and run the offense.  Z does each of these well.  He's been asked to shoot because of our lack of shooters, and he's often looked bad trying.  This isn't his fault.  There's a reason the off guard position is called, the "shooting" guard.  That's his job--put points in the basket.  This is where this team has failed.  We don't have a point guard issue.

I would just like to add: fuck the pink shoes. And fuck the screaming banshee that has followed our team through the post-season now for two years in a row. Please someone find her and stuff a pink shoe in her mouth.

What Luke said.

Wouldn't see Sparty or the Fab 5 prancing around in pink shoes & throwing up air balls.

Poole needs to ditch the tights also ... or better yet just leave him on the bench.

How can Simpson not do a jump shot at D1 level?

So after the evening to process and some customary ranting on the board (which we are entitled to do, which is literally the point of MGOBLOG), here are a few my more calmer thoughts:

  • Anyway you slice it, we choked last night.  It was a top to bottom collapse from coaching, game plan, player play, everything.  Everyone is responsible.  These games happen (see OSU Football game last year)
  • Beilein has, over time, learned from his mistakes/shortcomings, like hiring LY to fix our defense (great move BTW) BUT he has also as of late struggled with in game adjustments and long break adjustments (like having a week in between games to prepare for opponents with specific tendencies like MSU and TT)
    • Example:  Last night, yes Teske struggled, but he was getting to the rim and was picking up fouls on TT almost every time he got the ball.  We should have continued to run High Screen and roll, tell John to flash ASAP to the bucket and chances are its either a dunk, lay up or a foul on TT.
    • Example:  We tried to run 5 out in the 2nd half with Livers at the 5.  That basically made the game worse, as then it got even more so out of hand.  Not that it may have matter much at that point.  However, if we are going 5 out, Lives should be the 5 on DEFENSE only.  Iggy is arguable our best back to the basket player so on Offense, he should play the 5 on the High Screen and again, cut HARD to the hoop every time.  Again, now he is inline for a high % shot OR with Livers now at the 4 on offense, he can kick to the open man.  I don't believe we ran that at all and that is a simple easy fix to install in a couple of days.
    • Example:  Basically no answer for Michigan State's switching on every play defense, which exposed us to TT and frankly, we didn't do anything about it.  It was a known fatal flaw and looks to the eye like "oh well, no one else will do that to us".  The best teams make the adjustments needed to win.
  • We were much to tentative on offense when things got bogged down.  I counted at least 12 times that our team literally refused to take wide open shots and either turned the ball over or made terrible passes that put others in bad positions
    • Example:  I believe it was the first half where X drive to the lane, did a jump stop and had NO ONE infront of him, but instead of taking the 8 foot bunny he lobed a pass to a covered JP and it was a turn over.  Take the freaking open shot man, its there.  Make or Miss, that is the better play.
    • The same issue is something that really plagues our PG's Brooks and X.  I counted several times they had a man beat for a mid-range open jumper and would stop, and try to make a pass...Take the open shot, whether its your game or not.  You cannot score if you don't shoot and if that isn't their shot, truthfully, they shouldn't be playing.  The goal is put the ball in the basket.
  • When it is clear someone doesn't "Have It"
    • Last night, X just didn't Have it, whatever it is.  That does happen from time to time (Example:  Football - Bama v Georgia 2 years ago, Bama's 2 year starting QB didn't have it, Saban when to the barely played back up and guess what, sparked a win for the Title)  Yes its football, but its the same scenario
      • So, last night, when it was clear in the second half around the 10 minute mark it the game was almost over, why not just play DD.  Honestly, how much worse could it have been?  What if he sparked our play and we went on a 10-2 run over 3 minutes?  Yea, I get that maybe with him out there we could have lost by 30+ but at that point, we were losing anyways, so who cares if we lose by 10 or 30, losing is losing.
  • Next Year
    • We will be right back with the same team minus Mathews, I assume.  If X cannot find at least a consistent jumper, we have to look at other options. We cannot win with 2 limited scores in Teske and X playing that many minutes.  I would suggest some different looks in the early season
      • If X is struggling, lets run some high balls screen action with Poole and Iggy/LIvers.   With poole's shooting, that could be a devastating combo and while it only has to be run a few times a game, its a whole new look for teams to deal with
      • Its clear to me, young or not, Brandon Johns is a hybrid 4, not a 5 at the college game.  I would like to see some lineups next year with x, poole, iggy, Johns, Teske (insert livers for Johns as well) OR X/DD Poole Iggy Johns Livers/Caselton if we go a 5 out.  Again, doesn't have to be run day in and day out, but that line up for a 4 minute stretch would be a very difficult match up.

one of the biggest issues, was the Eli Brooks is looking like a miss.

Simpson is a great point guard, but he isn't going to pour in buckets when required...having a shooting guard develop from one of Brooks, Nunez DDJ is critical...

Iggy/Poole need to get more consistency in their games...sometimes they're great, and then other times they disappear.

they need a guy like Bajema to be a consistent threat from 3... i think they desperately need a guy like Franz wagner as well

in context, MIchigan had a unexpected very good year... they had a chance to make it a great year if they beat Sparty for the season or tournament title, but they could not finish... S16 was a bad matchup for Michigan, but there aren't any easy ones when you can't hit open shots

bitter ending to a very good year

Would you have been happier if we lost a really close, tight second round game?  I'd rather have the extra week despite this disappointment.  It was a bad night...and a great season.

I think the basketball program is in much better position than the football program. Mt expectation entering the tournament was reaching sweet 16. We achieved that,  so the season was good.

What a disappointing end to the season!  Since early February they never won more than 2 in a row.  Humiliating losses on the national stage leaves a sour taste for the off season, just ask Harbaugh and Co.   On to women's softball I guess.  Hutch is still the reigning best coach at Michigan.
