Shea Patterson to UM Rumor

Submitted by Expert In Bird Law on

So I received some info I wanted to pass along to you guys, not sure that I believe it since it didn’t come from Counterstrike Guy but here goes...

I want to be sort of ambiguous with the source information because I'm not sure how these type of things work but this is basically a friend of a friend who is a family friend type of situation.

Anyway, this person is from and lives in Toledo (Shea Pattersons home town) said Shea is coming to Michigan, also he apparently was in AA yesterday.

Some reasons I am skeptical is that I trust Sam Webb and he said the opposite, also I would assume news about him being in town yesterday would get out. On top of that why would he transfer to sit out a year and have no guarantee at playing time.

Don’t kill the messenger but thought this was some interesting potential developments

This is Nacht the kind of post I'm inclined to trust.

But the guy on Rivals who I'm pretty sure is UMBig11 (different username, same info) said that there was some truth to the following: once the Patterson family looked around, they thought there might be better options...on UMs end, the possibility of a Patterson transfer was not met with enthusiasm by the families of any of the current UM QBs. So, both parties cooled on the idea.

Idk, I tend to trust Sam since he's connected straight to the staff in some capacity. Doesn't mean things don't happen, just means if the staff are feeling one way it tends to play out that way more often than not.

Sean Parker a long time ago. Both players changed their minds right at the very end. Not much he could do about that.

Sam has two kinds of gut feelings lately. One is for recruits, which is always based on first hand info. He's been using the expression for other things lately. I haven't noticed those being as reliable.

I think Sam was more cautious about Wilson than many. Insiders were blindsided because our staff thought he was coming. Same with Najee Harris. Problem is that kids might tell the same thing to more than one school. Good reporters find that stuff out. I don't know that Wilson or Harris ever told any of the reporters they were committing here.

Sam might have gotten a few more wrong if he was able to tell everything he knows. He won't give a gut feeling if the kid doesn't want him to.

Webbs been wrong before but it seems unlikely on this one.  Shae might want to come to Michigan, which is where this information comes from but the staff feels good about their qb situation and wouldn't take him which is where Sam's info comes from.

Okay just think critically about the Patterson situation for one second:

Shea would have to lack serious common sense and guidance to transfer to Michigan. He would have to sit out next year (Ole Miss players won't be allowed to transfer without penalty due to NCAA violations as some have suggested). At that point he will be lose a whole year to two highly scouted and rated QBs who will be in front of him on the depth chart. His gamble would be that his talent is so much greater than both that of Brandon Peters and Dylan McCaffrey that he could afford to fall behind by an entire year of practice with the 1s and 2s and game experience and still beat them out for the starting job in two years. That would seem like a seriously arrogant miscalculation.

Peters played 4 games and ended the season with the team-best Passer Rating, YPA, TD:INT ratio, completion percentage, and was ahead of John O'Korn on the depth chart since halftime of the Rutgers game (and that continues threw bowl practices and beyond). Both Peters and McCaffrey were high school All-Americans. Patterson and Peters both would have been 4th in the Big Ten in Passer Rating this year. There's aboslutely no way that you could argue that Patterson wouldn't have stiff competition at Michigan - he'd be going up against two similarly talented QBs, one of which has performed similarly to him on the field so far.

Patterson is flashy and plays with bravado and a certain aggressiveness. Peters is the steady Eddy with a ton of arm talent. To me, they are the difference between Johnny Manziel and Andrew Luck. I think one is more explosive but more mistake prone (Patterson is under 2:1 TD:INT ratio, while Peters is 4:0 in limited sample), while the other may seem more boring but has all the talent you need to win every game. I think they are both talented enough to be an All-American or a Heisman winner, but if you gave me the ball with 2 minutes left and 80 yards to go, I would be very happy with Peters on my team.

I think Peters is starting and is the reason why Speight transferred. Whether Peters played games behind  O'Korn is entirely irrelevant since he is clearly better. In fact, he was quite clearly the best QB this season. I consider the RS soph with 2 years in the system and promising in his time as starter to be stiff competition. Add in a McCaffrey, and call me crazy I guess.

It would require the NCAA hitting Ole Miss with a bowl ban for the remainder of Patterson's eligibility, so a 2 year bowl ban. The NCAA gave Penn State a 4 year bowl ban, but cut that down to 2 years, USC got a 2 year bowl ban, OSU got a 1 year bowl ban. While Ole Miss' transgressions are much closer to USC and OSU (certainly not Penn State's), it's unlikely that they would get a 2 year ban like USC since they already imposed a 1 year ban on themselves. It's likely that the NCAA only gives them a 1 year bowl ban in their coming sanctions, meaning Patterson could not transfer without the penalty of sitting out a year.

Shea told his parents he is going to Michigan.

Shea's parents told their friend he is going to Michigan.

Shea's parent's friend to his friend that Shea is going to Michigan.

Shea's parent's friend's friend to you that Shea is going to Michigan.

Meanwhile, somebody in the football program tells Sam, this ain't happening.

You absorb all of this info and think you ought to pass it to the MGoBoard.

Color me skeptical.

OP, I don't know who you are, but have read (from another board) the same thing posted yesterday. Assuming, both are 1st hand accounts, buckle up!

I was at the airport in Jackson Mississippi yesterday and, don't quote me on this, but the guy sitting next to me at the gate had a Michigan shirt on and looked very official like he was on official Michigan business and he lifted an ass cheek to try to fart quietly but his asshole betrayed him and it wheezed out a "Shea's not coming to Michigan."

I was stunned at beholding a talking football insider asshole and as he got up and walked toward his flight I finally composed myself enough to run after him and shout "DO YOU PLAY COUNTERSTRIKE?  PLEASE I MUST KNOW!" but he and his asshole disappeared down the tunnel leaving me hangin.

Had to conclude Shea's not coming.
