I just read through a thread on twitter about this. Very interesting.
That is where I found it, I think.
By the way, I wonder if Wolverine-Den is the same as M-Den.
Van Boven is still on State St. I remember going to Fiegel’s as a kid before it closed…
I wonder what you got for the extra $5 at Men's Toggery. A vest?

I might get me a Sportjack - also will buy a pipe as an accessory. That look will tell the world "I am somebody"!
No, a blow job.
Year? 1904? 1948?
Has to be 1948 with that photo of Crisler and Oosterban. The resolution is too poor to read any fine text.

1948
Article mentions Al Renfrew, who won a national championship as a player, and also a national championship as coach of Michigan hockey. He also started the tradition of the Go Blue M Club Supports You banner at football games.
Cool find, and I'm generally not unhappy that "Pucksters" has fallen by the wayside.
"Puckheads" is still bandied about at times.

I think the article down the page about "Natators" was about the swim team, and that's a word that would be cool to make a comeback.
Love it. It's from the Latin "natare"---to swim. See also natatorium.

Loved the basketball players referred to "Cagers" as well. Remember this as a kid being utilized a little, definitely not used now.
Though Draymond Green's playing style may ultimately drive a comeback of the term...

Disagree. I like it and shall begin using it!
Good luck to the MGoPucksters in the Frozen Four!!!
The Wolverine Den was originally a restaurant/night spot on South U, not a clothing store.
This page in that same day's Daily (March 19, 1948) shows their opening night ad:

Eventually the Wolverine Den morphed into a regular greasy spoon diner not far down the block from the Brown Jug, and I ate at the Den frequently in the 1970s.
Wow, Bob Cousy...nice bonus
"No Stags on Dance Night" - haha, love it.

Thanks. I went to UM and lived in AA in the early 80s. I don't think it was around by then.
In 1978 The Den was definitely on the NE corner of South U. and Church. It had a Sunday night special of 1/2 tray deep dish pizza w/ 2 cokes for $4.99. No Sunday dinner in East Quad so my roommate and I were there often with 2 leftover pieces for a late snack while studying Calc 115.

Note the page also has an article covering what would Michigan's first NCAA tournament basketball team and, of course, the Israel-Palestine problem. Michigan was also the national champ in football that year.

It also refers to a stag only "quad smoker". Wonder what that is.
Don - were you there?
I'm old but not ancient.

Thanks for posting this.
Intramural paddleball. 60 dollar suits from Hart Shaffer & Marx. 2 dollar dress shirts. Pleated pants with pockets so large you can "rearrange the boys" easily and discreetly. Fritz and Bennie. "Just kibitzing".
Thanks again!

Weirdly, I miss the days when ads were mostly served in newspapers. And newspapers, made of, you know, paper!
April 10th, 2024 at 10:39 AM ^
Not weirdly, lol.
I remember learning the skill of snap-folding a newspaper down to a manageable size to read it easily, especially on a train for the morning commute. And then having to wash my hands to remove the ink when I got to the office.

No ads for women in the sports section back then. Now we have the womens final four out drawing the men. Times have changed.

What the Pucksters?

Our 1-6 record in national title games is so frustrating as you win just 2 of those and the programs stature is so different. Should’ve won in 2013: the block was clean but keeping Burke on the bench for the entirety of the last 12 minutes of the 1st half due to Beilein’s autobench after 2 fouls was a mistake as once Albrecht’s hot hand cooled (9 of his 17 points came while Burke was still on the floor) we let a 12 point lead dwindle to 1 point. Should’ve brought Burke back in the final few minutes of the half and trust your best player (who hardly fouled) to play without fouling. 1993 being the other one we should’ve won. 2018 and 1992 we just lost to the better team. 1965 & 1976 I have no context on.
Edit: didn’t realize this was about hockey and not basketball… awkward. On the MDen portion, I did some research and MDen didn’t open up until the early 80s when the founders (still the owners today) opened the first MDen in Briarwood and changed the name of their existing sporting goods store, Stein & Goetz, on Main St to MDen as well.
Regarding 1976 - Michigan's record that season was 25-7. Of those seven losses - three were to Indiana - two in conference play and one in the NCAA Final / Championship.
Indiana - coached by Bob Knight - finished an undefeated season with a 32-0 record.
The '76 Indiana mens hoops team was the last to go undefeated. It's approaching 50 years ago.

Vic Heyliger was Michigan's coach from 1944-1957 and his teams won most of Michigan's national championships. He was a successful coach at Illinois before that. I don't know why Illinois doesn't have a team now. He later coached Air Force.
Van Boven - an Ann Arbor landmark. I purchased my first pair of Allen-Edmonds shoes there.
Sam's still exists, though it moved, and I bought orange converse there many years ago
Thank you for sharing this. Wally Grant is my Grandfather and I don’t recall seeing this picture before. It will be nice to show my Grandmother as she gets ready for the game Thursday night. Hoping for another Natty while she is still with us.
We beat BC 6-4. In OT.
In their tournament debut, Michigan beat Boston College by a 6-4 score after a full OT period. The next day, the Wolverines followed it up by knocking off Dartmouth to win the inaugural (1948) championship.#CollegeHockey #FrozenFour #GoBlue pic.twitter.com/kkNvDiww5Q
