Roman Wilson Update

Submitted by dcblue92 on October 7th, 2021 at 12:38 AM

I saw an injury rumor mentioned earlier but no actual reporting. According to this article, Roman has a “minor” wrist injury and is questionable for Saturday. Hope he’s able to play without risk of further injury.

I'll paste the only information in the article that seems to be new.

Wilson is telling people that he's fine and that he didn't injure anything severely,

Everything else is just speculation or conclusion. There's not even mention of what Sam had said, that the injury was prior to Wisconsin.

Better OP title would have been: “Roman Wilson Telling People that He's Fine.”

There is absolutely nothing wrong with "Roman Wison update". He provided a link, although it wasn't the best link. Sam never mentioned one thing about Zinter's injury. It's more than likely the coaches wouldn't want an injury about starter leaked prior to a game anyway. I dont know, the OP doesn't know, and you don't know.

According to this article, Roman has a “minor” wrist injury and is questionable for Saturday.

There is not a single mention of him being "questionable" for Saturday in that article.

Here's everything anyone needs to know from that link.

Sometime yesterday rumors began to swirl that sophomore wide receiver Roman Wilson may have broken his wrist. Fortunately, that is not the case. The speedy pass catcher did tweak something in or around his wrist, but he's not expected to be hindered much or miss extended time.

Just as a heads up OP, for most sports fans and gamblers, "Questionable" is actually an injury report designation that would put Wilson at only around a 50% chance to go. "Questionable" is below "Probable"(75% likely) and above "Doubtful" (25% likely). Based on the status of "minor" wrist injury where he's not expected to be hindered much or miss extended time, that would put him as Probable or better.

"Questionable" would be bordering on a pretty bleak status.

I was using the English language word “questionable,” meaning he may not play, not the gambling term. According to the article, he “is being described as a game-time decision.” You can argue with the source, but that’s questionable to me.

In your OP, you said "According to the article...he is questionable for Saturday."

If him being questionable is your opinion of how you interpret that word in this context (which most of us would disagree with) you should say that. But you suggested that the article stated he is questionable for Saturday, which is incorrect. You may not feel that certain sports words have meanings, but to most of us they do.

That’d suck, especially after he just had probably his best game. Honestly though,  I don’t think it would be the end of the world because I think Henning can step in and do much of the same.

I'd like to challenge your take on this...why do you say this? Because they're both fast?

Wilson catches the ball MUCH better than Henning (and more importantly, the coaches and the starting QB trust him more).

Wilson is a below average blocker and still a much better blocker than Henning (who typically goes out for Sainristil when we need blocking).

Most important, they don't play the same position.

Daylen Baldwin or Andrel Anthony would be next up. Henning plays one position only...Slot WR.

"Wilson catches the ball MUCH better than Henning (and more importantly, the coaches and the starting QB trust him more)".

Based on what? Henning's history of drops? The coaches and McNamara have come out and said this? They play different positions. Roman has played outside and Henning has played slot. I've seen 2 receivers drop passes and neither was Henning.

Based on reports from insiders you trust at this site and others (Rivals, 247, etc.)

Everything reported is that he's inconsistent catching the ball.  Something Sainristil has proved to be much better with.  That's not to say he can't improve.  This time last year he couldn't catch punts, now look at him.  And to be clear, no one is saying he can't catch...no one is saying he's even average in that category.  The reports have always been about consistency and trust.

Regardless, THEY DON'T PLAY THE SAME POSITION.

From Dictionary.com:

Irregardless is a nonstandard synonym for regardless, which means “without concern as to advice, warning, or hardship,” or “heedless.” Its nonstandard status is due to the double negative construction of the prefix ir- with the suffix -less. ... The bottom line is that irregardless is indeed a word, albeit a clunky one.

So the part about catching was covered by two other posters!  Nonetheless, I'll go on to state that it appears Wilson is taking better to learning how to run routes and fight for the ball.  His improvement on routes is visibly noticeable over the last couple of games.  Against Washington, he could barely run a go route - even with all that speed!  Now he's running passable slants and crossing routes, out fighting good corners on jump balls, and making an acceptable attempt at blocks.

Henning, IMO, hasn't shown much change in his route running or blocking since the season started.  Once he has the ball, dude is ELECTRIC!  I gotta say, if he was improving as a receiver as much as it appears that Wilson has been, he'd be getting more - more time on the field, more pass targets, more touches...  Hopefully, he's been concentrating on locking down punt returns and will be be able to spend more time learning the WR craft soon.  I want him to get the ball!

I'm comfortable with the WR group going forward.  They are really young (CJ had all of 6 catches in his career before being thrust into the spotlight as the #1 WR in all of Michigan football 2021), but are showing so much improvement after just a few games!

I hope Wilson doesn't miss any time, he's becoming one of my favorite players on the team.

He has 9 catches for 145 yards this season, matching his 2020 reception total.

If healthy, I could see him ending up catching 25-30 passes for 400-450 yards. Hopefully, he'll have a touchdown or two, as well.

Why do fans always state “hope he’s able to play” in a situation like this? Is there a reason they wouldn’t want him to play? I mean other than if it was JOK.

The last paragraph of the article makes it sound like he will play if he is important for this week's game. So, whatever we know until now that he played through the injury during Wisconsin game seems like the way this is going to go. That is good news.
