Per rivals ($): DCC down to 5: Leavitt, Anderson, Pees, Randy Shannon, and Butch Davis

Submitted by gremlin3 on

Yes, that Randy Shannon and that Butch Davis. Apparently they even reached out to Harbaugh and asked to be interviewed.

Best I can do for a LINK. ($) (Yes, it's paywalled.)

Calling alum96, profile it up, baby. (I've only found Leavitt and Anderson posts.)

Shannon's career per wiki - will look to see how those 2001-2010 defenses did later tonight.  Don't get too excited about 2015 UF because Miss State's cool DC went over to UF and seems to be the main honcho but yes I mean if you want to replace a DC/LB coach (Durkins 2015 role)  this is the guy.  Was early 2000s Ed reed era or was that late 90s?

Coaching career (HC unless noted)
1991 Miami (GA)
1992 Miami (DL)
1993–1997 Miami (LB)
1998–1999 Miami Dolphins (assistant)
2000 Miami Dolphins (LB)
2001–2005 Miami (DC)
2006 Miami (DC/LB)
2007–2010 Miami
2012 TCU (LB)
2013–2014 Arkansas (LB)
2015–present Florida (AHC/Co-DC/LB)

So he went from the late 90s to early 2000s.  I almost feel like that 2001 team was so loaded that you have look at the other years to evaluate their defense.  They gave up less than 10 points per game.

38 guys on that team were drafted.  Not drafted or rookie FA signings.  Drafted.

At 1st glance the early Coker era was prime time Miami (2001-2003).  Then fell off later in the decade.  2004-2006 will be a good era to evaluate Shannon when he didnt have 14 NFL guy playing for him.

2000 Davis 11–1 7–0 1st W Sugar 2 2
Larry Coker (Big East) (2001–2003)
2001 Coker 12–0 7–0 1st W Rose 1 1
2002 Coker 12–1 7–0 1st L* Fiesta 2 2
2003 Coker 11–2 6–1 1st W Orange 5 5
Larry Coker (ACC) (2004–2006)
2004 Coker 9–3 5–3 3rd W Peach 11 11
2005 Coker 9–3 6–2 2nd Coastal L Peach 18 17
2006 Coker 7–6 3–5 4th Coastal W MPC Computers
Randy Shannon (ACC) (2007–2010)
2007 Shannon 5–7 2–6 5th Coastal
2008 Shannon 7–6 4–4 3rd Coastal L Emerald
2009 Shannon 9–4 5–3 3rd Coastal L Champs Sports 19 19
2010 Shannon 7–6 5–3 2nd Coastal L Sun

The U's total defense rankings:

2001: 6

2002: 7

2003: 2

2004: 25

2005: 2

2006: 5

2007: 28

2008: 25

2009: 34

2010: 20

Scoring defense:

2001: 1

2002: 22

2003: 4

2004: 14

2005: 4

2006: 13

2007: 53

2008: 56

2009: 38

2010: 27

Moral of the story: He is certainly a better coordinator than head coach.  And his defenses were very good as coordinator.

Of that list, Shannon would probably be my pick, then Anderson.  Shannon can probably be a better recruiter for us in Florida than even Durkin was.  Plus he can help Partridge with the LBs if need be.

Looking at his head coaching tenure, he is very much like Muschamp.  From 2007-2010 he changed coordinators three times (two times DC and changed OC in 2009).

I would sign on to Shannon before Davis, and probably Leavitt too (because of how he was fired from USF).

Wanted to look at how Shannon performed in terms of tempo-free.  Results are mixed.

S&P+ data only goes back to 2005.  FEI goes back only to 2007.

YEAR (POSITION) - S&P Rank / FEI Rank

2005 (DC) - 6 / XX

2006 (DC) - 24 / XX

2007 (HC) - 56 / 26

2008 (HC) - 73 / 62

2009 (HC) - 37 / 20

2010 (HC) - 18 / 14

2015 (DC) - 5 / 6

Ultimate conclusions in my recommendation post below.

I would like to know what happened in 07 and 08 but generally that is a pretty good set of #s outside those 2 yrs.  Unfortunately no advanced stats for a good part of his DC career.  But 01-03 I bet it was top 10 annually with the loaded rosters.

Looks like a dude named Tim Walton took over as DC in 07 so maybe he was an issue.  Then a dude named Bill Young took over in 08 (apparently he was OSU's DC in late 80s to 95!).  Then John Lovett in 09 - sheesh a turnstile.

p.s. the 2015 #s are not his alone - a very good DC came from Miss State that I think would be possibly the even better get.

Leavitt was so highly thought of that both Alabama and K-State tried to hire him as their HC.  And he coached for Harbaugh in SF.

Shannon would seem to be a home run hire.  Can we hire a DC and keep Partridge as LB coach, or would he have to resume his previous position and Shannon would have to coach LBs as well as coordinate the defense?

Randy Shannon should be the leader on that list. His LB knowledge is exactly what we need at this moment. The man also kills it in South Florida recruiting.
The only negative would be - how long would he stay?

You can get great recruiters without giving up D Coord position to do so, Randy was gifted supreme talent and ran a straight up D that depended solely on Canes winning 1-on-1 battles - and HoF type DT/NT.

13 years watching Canes (1999-2013 from living/attending UM) and only thing he ever did was recruit well...we do not want him as DC

its chicken and egg thing for sure in terms of does the loaded defense come from recruits or developent of 'croots. I am sure as a Miami fan his HC era left a bad taste.

Once we get past 2003 and those loaded teams he can be better evaluated as its not based on having a bevy of NFL guys constantly.

UM/Cane here (UM/UM YTM)

You do not want Butch or Randy - Butch has NCAA baggae and 1st slip up we'll get NCAA sanctions - also no way JH want's a proven walking violation like Butch

Randy - listen having been on campus at practices - it was all about the supremem talent, you'd hate Shanoon because he is a Hoke clone - "give more effort" coaching, not tactical.

I highly doubt either are what UM/ JH want, but I feel compelled to cut off anyone who looked at the canes and thought their success was coaching related with Randy as DC or HC.  Total good man, yes man to superiors (Donna had him on an acedemic goal instead of winning games - and he accepted that), and great recruiter for South Florida. Not the coach you need to out scheme superior teams or out wit equals.

Would be a great hire. He has as much influence and respect in South Florida as anyone. He would be a huge asset to recruiting.

As a UNC/UM alum, let me say that I think Butch Davis is an outstanding person, he was not tied to any of the shenanigans that happened at UNC (the academic stuff started a decade before he arrived) and he's got the best eye for talent in the country. I don't like what he does schematically, as it's entirely to conservative (we ran a cover 2 4-3 "right to rush four" kind of defense) but dammit if we won't have more 3-stars-turned-all-americans than anyone else.
