Risk Day 25 - An Enemy Has Bitten The Dust, But The Evil Empire Looms Large

Submitted by Michigan CFB R… on April 16th, 2020 at 12:02 PM

One of our enemies has perished. They chose to ally with an evil force, and that choice led to their doom. No, I'm not talking about Stanford...I'm talking about Oklahoma. The Sooners decided to put their trust and fate in TAM's hands, and that proved to be a deadly mistake. With just one territory to their name (their home territory), the Sooners were surrounded by TAM, Texas, and Michigan. And so, last night, TAM faced a choice...back off of two of their own territories and let the Sooners try to beat Texas and us for one/both of them, or hold their territories and leave OU's fate to the unforgiving gods of RNG. Needless to say, TAM chose the latter and allowed the Sooners to die trying to defend themselves against our army. RIP Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, we have our own threat to worry about. The Evil Empire (OSU) now controls Washington state, and the Scarlet and Gray continue to have more players than us (though the gap shrunk last night). We've pushed further into New England, but every step is a heavy lift against the 2nd most powerful team in the game. Additionally, Ohio State managed to kick Chaos out of the Northeast, so it's on us to continue pressing the Buckeyes in the East.

In other words, we need MORE POWER. And more importantly, we need consistent power. If you just joined the game, but put in a move every day for just 10 days, you double in value (as a 2 star). However, if you forget to play just once, you're reset to a 1 star and it takes three days to get back up to 2 stars. So please, DO NOT FORGET TO PLAY. Keep recruiting your friends, wives/husbands, girlfriends/boyfriends, kids, etc., but the most important thing is for you to play every day.

The Maize and Blue need YOU!

There is too much icky red on that map.

A few random questions that I haven't seen the answers to (but I haven't looked back at old posts):

  • What's going on with Chaos this year?
  • Are there broad alliances? (Last year, we were allied with Florida...and there was a "Red" alliance).
  • Are they going to let this go to the bitter end this time?  I mean, we're already making noises about cancelling fall sports...what else are we going to do?

One other question that's kind of about the game:  Other than moving every day, how else can we increase our stars?  How does one become an MVP?  How does one gain r/CFB stars? Moving the needle in either one of these areas would raise the floor (and make missing a day less of a big deal).

1. The same thing that goes on with Chaos every year.....they are chaotic.

2. There are semi-broad alliances, but things are fluid. We don't like TAM, Stanford, or OSU. GT is friendly with everybody. Beyond that, trust the assignments.

3. We don't know how long it will go on. It probably won't go until 1 team is standing, though, because that's likely impossible. It's super hard to eliminate even the small teams due to RNG.

To answer your questions about game mechanics:

  • Other than moving every day, how else can we increase our stars?
There are 5 star categories: cumulative turns (between last year's game and this year's game), turns in the current round, streak in the current round, MVPs, and r/CFB awards. The turns/streak in the current round are most in your control now. If you played last year, then you will quickly advance in the first category. MVP and r/CFB are more out of your control.
  • How does one become an MVP?
Each night, the RNG (Random Number Generator) randomly generates a number for each territory, picking a winner. That winner is the MVP. Considering there are thousands of people playing each night, your chances of getting an MVP are fairly slim, and totally random.
  • How does one gain r/CFB stars?
I am actually less clear on this, myself. The feedback I've gotten is that unless you've been an active participant in that sub-reddit for the last couple years, you're not going to be able to make up much ground here.

The good news is that your overall star ranking are based on the median value of the 5 categories. So even if you have 1 star in r/CFB, that won't hold you down if you focus on the areas that you can control (ie, streak and number of rounds).

Yesterday was the most satisfying 15 seconds of play for me yet - I got to attack and help secure Columbus. It's so nice to take the fight to the enemy. Fortunately I didn't pick up any diseases or find any full coolers.

No one's required to take an order, but we ask two things of those who do

1) Please don't post your orders for others to see. This is a public forum, so other teams are given a look into our strategy when you do that. Loose lips sink ships!

2) You're not required to take orders! It actually hurts us when you take orders and ignore it, since it throws off our numbers for the day! If you want to go rogue, we're definitely not going to stop you from hitting OSU, but please don't take orders and then go rogue!
