Remember '16 UCF/Scott Frost lost 51-14 but "out hit" us

Submitted by Blue Sharpie on

Bulletin board material:

For those who don't remember, after the 2016 game when we killed UCF 51-14, Scott Frost said after the game that his team "out hit" us. LOL ?!

I hope Harbaugh uses this as motivation gainst Nebraska this week!

No, because there's no role reversal necessary.  Both teams were in basically the same spot in '97. Michigan handled it with class and was not rewarded.  Nebraska handled it without class and won half a national championship that they didn't deserve, with special assists from Peyton "waaaah that was my Heisman waahhh wahhh wahhh my daddy said it was" Manning and Phil Fulmer.

I'm not saying that I agree with what the coach's poll did, but if #1 Michigan had done to #8 Washington State what #2 Nebraska did to #3 Tennessee (and Peyton Manning), Michigan would have finished #1 in both polls.

12-0 Nebraska beat the snot out of 11-1 SEC champ Tennessee 42-17.

11-0 Michigan just barely hung on against 10-1 PAC10 champ WSU 21-16, with the game going down to the last seconds.

If you want to secure an undisputed championship, don't leave it up to the judges' scorecards. Knock your opponent out and there's no question.

Did you watch the Nebraska-Tennessee game?  Yeah, Nebraska won by a lot.  Against a Tenn. team whose QB, Peyton Manning, seemed physically incapable of throwing more than 20 yards or so.  Looked as if he was playing injured.

Michigan also had the more impressive wins against two common opponents.  And Nebraska needed an illegal play just to get into overtime against a mediocre Missouri team.

I like the saying about "don't leave it up to the judges' scorecards."  It's a good frame of mind for handling an opponent in a boxing match.  But it doesn't really apply to the context of the judges deciding which winner of two different games should be champion--those judges necessarily go to their scorecards.

The performance in the bowl game in on Jan. 1, 1998 was just as important as our performance in our bowl game 50 years earlier in 1948.

From the Bentley Historical library website for UM sports history:

"Michigan and Notre Dame had traded the top spot in the polls through much of the season. Notre Dame was No. 1 and Michigan No. 2 in the final regular season poll. In an unprecedented post-bowl games poll, the Associated Press named Michigan No. 1 on the strength of the Wolverines' decisive win over Southern California in the Rose Bowl. Notre Dame had been less dominant in its season ending win over the Trojans."

Ugh, can we give this thing a rest? It was during a post game interview he said something like “we came out strong, I thought we out hit them in the first half”. It was a generic coach speak comment and for some reason people have held on to it for 2 years.

No, he went beyond that.

"It's hard to say when the score is what it is, but we came in here and outhit those guys today," Frost said. "Standing on the sideline, there was no doubt who was hitting harder. Our guys came in hungry and wanting to do that. It's rare you can come into Michigan and rush for 300 yards on them. They had to run a fly sweep in the fourth quarter to get to 100...

"There was no lull. We outhit them in the first half, I thought we outhit them in the second half. They've got a lot of playmakers and they made a bunch of plays. But standing on the sideline, watching the impacts and watching the collisions and watching the line move, I thought we won that battle."

Plus the guy (and his mom, apparently) is just an assclown in general and deserves mockery.

Scott Frost is nothing like Brady Hoke.  Frost is loud, uber-agressive, and suffers from too much testosterone.  Hoke was simply Dave Brandon's passive little prison bitch.  Plus, Frost wears a headset.

I know the out-hit comment is a meme around here and that we all like making fun of it, but I honestly don't mind it. We had just annihilated his team, and he was trying to find something positive to say to his guys so that they could keep their heads up and go into the next week not too down on themselves.

What was he supposed to say? "Yeah, we suck and I saw no redeeming qualities in our loss today?"

He blocked me on twitter after that game because I said he looked like Scut Farkas from A Christmas Story.

This was about 3 hours after the game. He was just hanging out on twitter blocking people.

If I were a reporter I would ask Harbs this week:  "Jim remember in '16 when Scott Frost's squad allegedly out hit you guys, but you won 51-14, will your guys be up to the challenge of a hard hitting Scott Frost team?"    Answer could be priceless.

They did kinda outhit us in the first half of that game.

As for comments from over two decades ago, I don’t care.  Sometimes I just want to win the game because its a contest.

I didn’t say that they outscored us in the first half.  From coach:

"They hit well, that was a good, physical football team and I was impressed with the way they tackled, I was impressed with the way they played," Harbaugh said. "I was very impressed with their speed. I agree, they played very well.

Whether or not they outhit us really doesn't matter to me.  It’s mostly an opinion thing, but for a coach that is building a culture l can certainly understand him saying it.  I also don’t understand why M fans would get their undies in a bunch over it.

It is possible to say something positive about how your team played without demeaning the team that just annihilated you in the game.  How about, “the score may not have reflected this, but I thought we played hard from start to finish, we ran the ball really well, and did it in a very hostile environment.”    It’s just poor sportsmanship to talk the way he did.  At least, that’s how I see it.

That's exactly what happened in '97.

Brian Griese lobbied for Michigan after winning the Rose Bowl and going undefeated "I don't know what more we could do."

He made his own case, with class.  He never said a word about Nebraska.

But Frost came out and trashed Michigan left and right to make his case.

It left a bad taste in our mouths, and is why to this day many of us want to see his ass get kicked.  Especially since he has not changed, he's still a classless dick.

Let's roll the fucker.
