Reds Announcer Thom Brenneman Went Combo Ron Burgundy and Jim Brockmire Tonight
Brenneman says something awful on a hit mic...
And then goes on to call a home run in the middle of his apology. A home run that lands in The Judgement Free Zone. Can’t make this stuff up.

Lighten up everybody. I’m sure he was in a spirited discussion about Northern Russia - the lumber capital of the world

To be fair they were playing Kansas City

The most insufferable announcer in the country. I dreaded him getting the call of games I wanted to watch. Because he is a moralizing blowhard.
So I find this hilarious and predictable.
August 20th, 2020 at 2:58 AM ^
Makes you wonder if he's had rants like this behind the scenes in the past and somebody decided to open up the mic when they felt this one brewing.
August 20th, 2020 at 5:58 AM ^
Thom’s thyme with the Reds has likely come to an end.
August 20th, 2020 at 6:09 AM ^
He may say that’s not who he is but the way he dropped that F seemed pretty nonchalant and easy. Fuck him.
August 20th, 2020 at 7:05 AM ^
He reared back and put some extra MPH on it too.
“That’s not who I am...I generally remember not to say stuff like that on the AIR.”
August 20th, 2020 at 8:30 AM ^
Agreed, you can nearly hear the actual contempt in his voice. It was not a slip of the tongue, it was a precision guided missile on target, which happened to be launched at the wrong time.
August 20th, 2020 at 7:04 AM ^
Sí, creo que ha dicho sus palabras finales describiendo un partido profesional.
August 20th, 2020 at 10:51 AM ^
Frito está, más que un huevo
August 20th, 2020 at 7:27 AM ^
I heard he's speaking at the Republican convention next week now.
August 20th, 2020 at 7:41 AM ^
Oh hell, are we gonna start this shit again? For once I’d like to bask is someone’s very deservedly demise without turning it into political discourse.
August 20th, 2020 at 7:35 AM ^
He at least owes the courtesy of telling us which city he was talking about.
August 20th, 2020 at 8:32 AM ^
It is 99.9% certain to be San Francisco, where Kamala Harris is from. There is virtually no chance that a self-professed "man of faith" says "fucking gay capitol of the world" on the very day that she becomes the first black female VP candidate, and is from SF, without her being the point of attack.
(Edit/Disclaimer: I have not actually heard the quote because my work blocks most video content. I quoted the above because it seems pretty clear that's what he said. If he didn't say that, please correct my quote.)
August 20th, 2020 at 9:59 AM ^
Yeah, that wasn’t the F word he used.
August 20th, 2020 at 11:06 AM ^
Okay... So now I get why some have said they haven't heard that word used in a long time! It also doesn't sound any better than what I wrote...
August 20th, 2020 at 10:16 AM ^
There's not a lot that was picked up by the mic. Less then 10 words, unless there was a longer clip.
August 20th, 2020 at 8:03 AM ^
Mitigating the "sins of the father" is hell. "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, creeps at this petty pace...". This is why each of us needs to look in the mirror...recognize ourselves for who we are...and try to improve what we see.
August 20th, 2020 at 8:03 AM ^
I’m sure he will just say he watched a lot of British television and that he was referencing a city where a lot of cigarettes are smoked.
it will all be cleared up today.
August 20th, 2020 at 8:13 AM ^
Could be in reference to the manufacturer. British American Tobacco has factories in Southampton, Corby and Salford.
He did wrong and he's toast.
August 20th, 2020 at 10:17 AM ^
Only way that could've worked was if he was smoking a pack of Pall Mall while making his apology.
August 20th, 2020 at 11:29 AM ^
maybe he was just talking about Schweinfurt, which is where their global headquarters is...
on a related note, these guys need to hire a brand management consultant.
August 20th, 2020 at 8:05 AM ^
I like how he pointed out he's a man of faith. That should fix everything.
August 20th, 2020 at 8:11 AM ^
Wow, that was.. just.. bad. This won't end well.
August 20th, 2020 at 8:48 AM ^
What’s so odd to me is the fact that I haven’t heard anyone use that term in like 15 years. Who the hell still talks that way?
August 20th, 2020 at 9:17 AM ^
More people than you'd expect, unfortunately.

Statement from the Reds:
The Cincinnati Reds organization is devastated by the horrific, homophobic remark made this evening by broadcaster Thom Brennaman. He was pulled off the air, and effective immediately was suspended from doing Reds broadcasts. We will be addressing our broadcasting team in the coming days. In no way does this incident represent our players, coaches, organization, or our fans. We share our sincerest apologies to the LGBTQ+ community in Cincinnati, Kansas City, all across this country, and beyond. The Reds embrace a zero-tolerance policy for bias or discrimination of any kind, and we are truly sorry to anyone who has been offended.
August 20th, 2020 at 9:41 AM ^
If he was comfortable saying it to his coworkers, I doubt it was the first time he used it. Which begs the question as to what was their response in other times he's said such things? I'm guessing nothing.
August 20th, 2020 at 9:53 AM ^
The mic is always hot. It's an easy rule to follow, just like "the gun is always loaded."
August 20th, 2020 at 9:59 AM ^
Idk Disney World is definitely in the running for that title. It’s was a refreshing realization when hearing this that you don’t hear this type of talk much anymore. Gay people have really come a long way in the last couple decades.
August 20th, 2020 at 10:19 AM ^
Considering he called The Horror for BTN, I won't be upset that one less remnant from that game is not on the airwaves. Next up, Charles Davis.
August 20th, 2020 at 10:47 AM ^
Never knew that he called that game. Unfortunately, I was AT the Horror and naturally had no desire to go back and watch it.
August 20th, 2020 at 10:29 AM ^
The home run call during the apology made it more sincere.
August 20th, 2020 at 10:53 AM ^
I have said for years I thought Brenneman was the most negative, hard to listen to announcer in the NFL. Not sure I have felt that way about any other announcer in my life but that said I hate to see someone lose their job/career as much worse things have been done it seems by others who are still employed in the profession.
August 20th, 2020 at 11:21 AM ^
Yeah, going to be hard to walk that back. I also have no idea what context would lead to him saying that.
Anyway, people usually are themselves when they think nobody is looking. Seems to be the case here (the "I'm a man of faith" statement is also usually a dead giveaway that you are, in fact, only selectively paying attention to some components of your faith).
August 20th, 2020 at 12:49 PM ^
Cya Thom. Time to remember lots of people can do what you do
August 20th, 2020 at 1:14 PM ^
Pride's himself as a man of faith. I think that goes without saying.
August 20th, 2020 at 1:22 PM ^
A person hired to speak in public spoke hurtful things about a part of the public. It's not cancel culture, it's someone doing their job badly.
