Recruiting News about Nico Collins & Aubrey Solomon

Submitted by umhero on

Two quick tidbits:

Steve Lorenz is reporting that, on the first day after the the dead period, Jim Harbaugh will use his in-home visit with Nico Collins. Link

Do you think it will be a sleepover?

Sam Webb had an interview with Aubrey Solomon's mom that he played yesterday but was recorded at the U.S. Army All-American Game. In it she said that, "Michigan is her favorite." Her list is Michigan, Georgia Tech, followed by Alabama. She believes Michigan provides a better opportunity after football. She says Aubrey lists them as Alabama first with Michigan and Georgia (not Georgia Tech) tied. It's worth a listen Link. Scroll down and look for "Aubry Solomons mom."

Steve Wiltfong, Touch the Banner and one other person put in CB's to LSU for Willie Gay today. No likey.

Also, a sports writer who follows Oregon football named Scott Reed says he expects Mario Cristobal to Oregon to be finalized today. I haven't seen that anywhere else so FWIW.

if Harbaugh hits up Gay right after Nico or if he goes straight to Solomon. I believe he is visiting Nico 1st because he believes he has the best chance to close with him. Gay seems like and SEC guy, but if you have a Harbaugh, you have a chance.

Thanks for posting this. I listened to it yesterday as well, and her mom sounds legitimately high on Michigan. It's a good listen.

To go along with this, I'll just add this here instead of creating a new post. Not trying to thread jack, but it fits well in with your post and probably not worth a new thread.

Sam discussed Willie Gay this morning and added a few tidbits of information. Willie softened his stance on LSU a little and was quoted as saying... "It's not like Michigan has fallen as much as LSU has come up." Again, Sam believes this is largely due to the fact that LSU had a LB decommitment and Michigan added some excellent LB prospects.

Apparently since Willie Gay's LSU report went out, communication has really gone up with Michigan (not saying there was little communication before, but the staff is pushing for him even more - he's a priority). And he's been talking basically to the entire staff, not just his primary recruiter, so that's further evidence as to how hard they will push for him come Signing Day. Also, his mom AND aunt want him to come to Michigan. Both will have an influence on his overall decision.

In this same discussion, Sam also touched on Aubrey's recruitment a bit more and added that Aubrey's decision will have an extremely high influence from his family/Mom. Here's a comparative Mom Factor for which all prospects had Mom on Michigan's side.

Isaiah Wilson - Little to no MF - Parents wanted him to make his own decision

Willie Gay - Medium MF - Goes on record as saying it's important to him what Mom thinks, but it also sounds like he will make his own decision while being influenced by Mom.

Aubrey Solomon - 9/10 MF - After the "letter" came out, Aubrey was quoted as saying something to the effect of "Mom will be in control of my recruitment." The fact that Mom wants Aubrey to go to Michigan (at least at the moment but I'd have a hard time seeing this change), I believe this could mean Michigan might actually need to be considered the favorite again. This is my belief on the "favorite" talk, but the MF is real. Listen to the link in the OP, and you'll have more confidence in Mom.

I believe it's time we start discussing the Mom Factor as a thing and start incorporating it into all future recruiting posts. This is just my opinion, however, as it is possible I just came up with this idea during a recent "work break."

I haven't heard any talk about him on Offense, so I can't really comment on it. I don't believe he has Peppers' speed, but I also believe he already has more size than Peppers. Still extremely fast/athletic for a Linebacker, but Peppers had Track speed. I heard a 40 time thrown out there of 4.5/4.6 for Willie, so that's not exactly Track fast but still elite LB speed.

Appreciate the take and info. I definitely do not think we are the favorite for Solomon though. I think it goes Alabama, Georgia, and then Michigan even with him saying the whole tie thing. I will be somewhat shocked if he ends up here. Hope he does because he is a real talent, but if I had to put money on it, I think he will be at Georgia.

It's an odd argument for me. We're talking about kids who will play in fornt of tens of thousands of fans every week in the fall. We all give these kids, the coaches, and this team ALL THE ATTENTION in the world for 4 hours every Saturday in the fall. They all want attention, and we're happy to give it to them.*

then it's probably over. He's going to Bama but wanted some drama and attention for his announcement.

Saw Harbaugh at the Vanderbilt basketball game last night. (Where isn't he?) Figured he was heading in Nicos direction to get an in home. Nice to get confirmation. Lock it down JH

Any word on when Solomon said he will announce a committment ? Hopefully we can get atleast one of these guys.

Has to visit USC and then he will decide. Bama has a large lead. Would be a mild upset if he doesn't go there. Better chance to play early at Michigan and better for his non-football life. Hopefully Reese can help us on him. High School coach is in our corner.

why isn`t this much time spent on last years class? you all seem so sure these recruits are can`t miss superstars, and yet seem to sweep under the rug players that have been in the system for a full year as if they have all peaked.

Well, for one, its kind of the whole "everyone loves the backup QB" corallary. Its something new we havent seen so its exciting.

Two, I dont think anyone is "sweeping this years class under the rug", but there isnt much to talk about regarding them right now. The season is done, some we saw, some we didnt. So its just more exciting to talk about guys where things are happening.

Also, we're trying to figure out who is going to fill in the holes in next year's lineup. In that regard Bredeson and Onwenu are on the same footing as Cole. We know they'll be starting. We pretty much know who the starters are on the DL but we don't know who will be the 1b guys in the rotation. Looking a little bit further down the road we know we need someone to fill in for Hurst after next year. Hence, the interest in (obsession with) Solomon.

I think many of us here were ecstatic with last years class and still are about there potential. I'm not going to go back and look for my quote but I said I thought it was the best class Michigan has had since I've been following recruiting starting 11 years ago. This class might be better. Two truly elite classes with future NFL talent. Even our lowest rated recruits like Metellus, St Juste ( before his bump ), Kingston Davis, and Andrew Stuebers have incredible potential.

I always take reports on "this is what mom wants" with a huge grain of salt.

I remember being 17-18.  If anything, at that age I'd do precisely the opposite of the thing my parents wanted me to do.  I specifically remembered choosing my undergrad (not UM). My dad was supportive of my decision but made no secret of his preference (mainly based on cost).  I wanted to go to the same college but the fact that he wanted that too almost made me turn tail and run the other direction.

I think it worked out well with Rashan Gary (if I recall his mom was on our side), so I assume this is case by case, but I always raise a skeptical eyebrow when I hear a recruit's mom wants them to choose a certain school.  I certainly don't take it as an indicator that IT'S HAPPENING.

I listened to Aubrey's mom. My take is that she is purely thinking from an intership/post-football perspective, That's why she likes Michigan and GT (which is in heart of Atlanta). Alabama has an internship program, a step below, but at least they have something. so it sounds like a pre-requisite. Sounds like Aubrey is looking from purely football perspective, but he also realized he is a young man trying to grow up, looking to his mom for guidance. It sounds like she is guiding him toward Michigan but leaving the decision up to him. Yes, take with a grain of salt. but we are certainly not out of it like it seemed before. After listening to mom, it truly feels like it will depend on how Aubrey weighs the different factors.

agree that parent opinion can be like magnet--repel or draw closer. here, it sounds like he did realize he made a mistake and did listen to his mom's guidance in how to handle his "mistake." she also draws a parallel between Michigan's "mistake" with Aubrey and Aubrey's "mistake", saying that Aubrey looked to how Harbaugh handled the mispelled letter snafu as a blueprint for owning your errors and making things right. so he is young, but he could be growing before our eyes through this recruiting process. I feel like the more mature, more global (not just football) view he takes, the more he will value Michigan. it all depends on how much influence and guidance he takes from his mom. if you listen to Sam's cast you hear she has a really good head on her shoulders, she is guiding him, but he is making the decision.

Visits Herbert here soon or if he waits till after the Florida visit. Would really like to hold onto this kid unless they feel Becton is a wash with Herbert leaving.

Herbert made a cool committ video, would be just plain silly to flip to Florida after that.

I get that everyone is expecting him to flip, but there were a couple guys like Herbert last year that stayed blue in the end.

I really want Herbert in this class as well. I'm not sure what happened with his rankings and haven't been able to find much film of his senior year but I loved his junior tape. Probably has the best feet of anyone in our class and it isn't close. Also has a great frame, plays with intensity, and when you listen to his interviews he's a real smart, well spoken kid. Seems like he would mesh well with the other recruits.

I can't wait till after this years NFL draft, we'll actually have some NFL starters / first round players drafted for the first time since Lewan (?). I'm assuming recruiting will take a huge upswing after that.

I believe that Solomon is simply trying to placate the Michigan fanbase. His mom's comment about not wanting people to dislike or to be upset with him only made me more firm in that stance. He wont end up blue.

disclaimer:  I'm old.

Mitigating factor:  Got kids that clue me in where I'm clueless.

Kids' take, on the effect of Twitter comments, is that everyone knows what to disregard and not.  I can neither confirm nor deny.
