Rashan Gary vs Purdue
I'm impatient and don't want to wait for the UFR, so here we are. Was it just me or did Rashan Gary have a very quiet game against Purdue? It didn't seem to my fairly untrained eyes that he had much of an impact during the game. Was I just not paying attention?

doesn't mean that our defense is playing up to my expectations. I expect more, more, more!!! I want our team to win every single snap and shut every team out - otherwise they are not playing up to my personal expectations.
The fact that we have given up 0 points in the 4th quarter this season and 14 points in the 2nd half is meaningless. Our guys are tired out there - it is only because of horrible competition that the other team can't score.
The fact that Purdue's offense was clicking on all cylinders and was the national media darling before the UM game is also meaningless because their opponents were all terrible. Every team we play is terrible and every team our opponents play is terrible so nothing we do on defense means anything to anybody.
/s - for the idiot fringe on this board.

That comment was bad and you should feel bad about making it.

If he's not complaining, I think we should stop.

This thread should be deleted since it has no facts and is bitching about one of our best players. I mean Harbaugh's dad (and by assumption Harbaugh and players?) read MGo.
Mods?

OMG, censorship is the answer. Got it.

Not censorship at all. Where are the facts? Analysis?
Hint: There are none. That's why this should be deleted and also why MGo is becoming less relevant as the "insider" blogs consolidate (and also lose readers).

He had 1 tackle. That's a quiet game. Confirmed.
Also, Peppers had 0 interceptions.

10 yards i the second half. I think Gary did his job.

If you think Hurst, Bush, and Winovich getting to the QB is not related to Gary's play, you need to watch more football.

Anyone that thinks Hurst/Gary aren't playing well because they don't have stats likely has X's and O's knowledge on the level to where they think "Run up the middle" is an actual playcall.

I seem to remember someone saying that the plan for Gary was to start him at DE and eventually move him inside. That could make a lot of sense next year when Hurst moves on. A DL of Kemp-Solomon-Gary-Winovich would be devastating.

Anyone who is not concerned over the lack of stats is deluding themselves.
I am concerned. Consensus All-Americans need to have direct impact in games.
Not saying he is playing poorly, but it is a bit of a head scratcher when you see him get angry and dominate for a few plays then be quiet rest of the games.

Like Strawman heaven right there.
I always love hyper emotional responses to valid questions.
Such a big problem in our modern day society.

Yes, he had a quiet game because Purdue literally ran all their plays in the opposite direction of Gary.

Never has a quiet game. Dude has a constant motor and when you see other guys getting to the QB, usually means Rashan was not being quiet somewhere.
Love Gary, love this DEFENSE!
GO BLUE!!

He's tied for 6th with Hurst on the season in tackles. I'll take that from a defensive lineman. You expect the linebackers to lead with the safeties next. Having Hurst and Gary tied for 6th is good. Having Winovich 3rd with 22 tackles and 6 sacks already is amazing, but he's also benefitting immensely from playing next to Hurst and Gary.

The 3-3-5 scheme that we've used so far for spread-type teams allows the OL to pick their poison in terms of double teams. I would expect that to change when we play teams like MSU and Wisconsin. Mone will play meaningful minutes in a 4-3 scheme and Gary would be more disruptive as a traditional defensive end.

It's OK to say he's been a little underwhelming. Gary was a pre season All American a lot of places, he has 1 sack throuhg 4 games.
Gary's talent is evident, but he's not put it all together at this level yet. The elite college players beat their guy 1 on 1 over and over and make plays eventually. Gary isn't beating his man as consistently as he needs to for him to put up stats, simple as that. Frankly, I expect Winnovich to start drawing double teams more often.

Gary was close to making a ton of huge plays vs Purdue (watch the replay) he was in the backfield on the 3 fumbles (either causing them or close to jumping on the ball) he was in the tackle pile often and didnt get credit for the tackle or half tackle .Plus Purdue got it out of the QB hands fast.
Like people have been saying he gets double.triple teamed almost every snap, this makes everyone else better .
September 25th, 2017 at 12:14 PM ^
He was doubled, and I still saw him in the backfield after having beaten the double many times. But still, each time he's doubled he frees someone else for a big play. He just happens to beat his double team a second slower than Chase or Devin or Mo are able to beat one on one or run in scott free.

I want to know when we're going to see #3 in the backfield in the red zone! The Fridge, but faster!

Such is the nature of a 3-3-5 defense. Your lineman tend to get double-teamed because the O-line has no idea which linebacker(s) are blitzing, which has freed up Bush to make the plays he has.
