Question/Request regarding the broadcaster last night MBB

Submitted by Michigan Philosophy on November 13th, 2019 at 11:04 AM

I was watching the win last night and towards the end of the game Livers had some free throws. I hear the announcer talk about how no one will forget his clutch shot to send Michigan to the Final Four. So the announcer, talking about an "unforgettable moment" is literally forgetting the guy who made that shot is now in the NBA and not the same #2 at the line. Did anyone else hear that or am I going crazy? Does anyone have the link to the full game so I can find it?

If it was Tim Brando this kind of error is par for the course.

I actually don't think he is particularly bad at college basketball, far better than he is in football, but he makes factual and pronounciation mistakes all the time.

Yes, Brando said that. He's an idiot

it wasn't to the final 4, and it was Poole not Livers.

You can forgive him for maybe confusing it as Livers took over Poole's number and they do have sort of similar hair

But cmon man, we didn't even make the Elite 8, much less the Final Four

I heard that too. Started racking my brain trying to find a game winning shot that Livers hit that tourney run. Obviously realized Brando was mistaken, would be nice if they then corrected themselves.

After Brando's gaffe, Rafftery said something like "he's lost a lot of weight too. He has lost a good agood fifteen pounds and really got himself into shape." Then they discussed what a great game Livers had. So Rafftery either didn't recognize the gaffe, or he tried to switch the focus back onto Livers in the present day and didn't correct Brando on his mistake.

This sort of thing used to happen constantly with Harry Caray and Steve Stone during Cubs broadcasts. Stone was obviously hyper meticulous in every aspect of his job, but Harry was a sloppy ridiculous mess. But Stone almost never called him out, even when Harry's mistakes were ludicrous. I bet it took a lot of therapy to broadcast a game with Harry Caray and remain professional.

My guess is that he was trying to change the subject.  Raff is not as sharp as he used to be but Poole seemed to be one of his favorite players in the country and he called like 10 BIG games and 5 NCAA tourney games where Poole and Livers featured prominently.  It would shock me if he was unaware of Brando's error.

I'm from Ypsi, so that's always a pet peeve.

By the way, there's a small town in North Dakota that's also called Ypsilanti (a guy from Michigan's Ypsi founded the place). The people there call it "Yipsilanti." Kind of like there's two different ways of pronouncing "Charlotte," depending on whether you're in Michigan or North Carolina.

But unless Keith Jackson was talking about a player from Ypsilanti, North Dakota, then he was screwing it up.

I heard that also- I took notice, but really how do these announcers know all of the players all the time for every game. Easy to make a mistake during a broadcast like that. I shrugged it off.

It wasn't a big deal in this particular instance, but in some ways it is starting to seem like a big deal for Tim Brando. I have noticed him making mistakes like this with some regularity of late. He masks it with his own brand of jolly enthusiasm, but he's either not doing his homework as well as he used to or his mind is slipping a little.

Particularly with a guy like Brando.  He is not very knowledgeable about any sport, but you could honestly send him to a basketball game, a tennis match, a swim meet, a golf course, or a croquet match and he would know just enough to be passable.

That is his entire business model.  "I'm not good, but I'm really versatile."

Tim Brando is terrible. He does not care that he makes significant errors every time he broadcasts a game. And he makes significant errors every time he broadcasts a game.

If this was an isolated thing, maybe one could shrug it off. But it's every damn time.

While it is true that Poole made the shot, don't forget that it was Livers that made the baseball-style inbound pass to MAAR to set up the play.

Coach B said afterwards that Livers was in specifically because he could make that pass.  Without that, it is questionable that there would have been enough time for the shot.

Thankfully, Houston didn't have anyone defending the inbound pass.

We had led 61-60 going into the last minute and then missed like three shots right at the rim, while that one Houston guy kept making FTs (until finally missing the pair at the end).  If we had lost it would have really been a tough way to end the season.
