Question on the Tennessee shit show and the early signing period

Submitted by jbrandimore on
I want to state upfront that I am not drunk, but does there come a time that if Tennessee can’t find a coach and AD in this compressed time frame that they are better off taking a page from the Ohio State playbook and let Brady Hoke have an entire year as an interim coach? Their recruiting class must be collapsing and at some point soon I would think that would be of critical concern.

finally a school has replaced us for most incompetent coaching search. So glad we finally got it right with Harbaugh. Unless Tennessee is slow playing us all in a bid to get Dantonio!?!? I’m joking, but seriously, this has been a dumpster fire.

They should just give Tee Martin a shot! I mean the guy has been a good OC and he’d probably be better than some bottom of the barrel retread head Coach that’s out there right now.

The rumor (that keeps recurring) is that the Manning's don't want Martin because he won the MNC (when Peyton couldn't get it done).  The thought is that Martin could cement his legacy over Peyton's with a good coaching tenure.  I think it's all bullshit, but Peyton is such an asshole it's not beyond possibility...

what a circus that is. Two of Tennessee football's biggest names ever - Manning and Fulmer - would be actively sabotaging the success of UT for their own gain. It'd be like Tom Brady and Bo (if he were still alive), sabotaging the Harbaugh search for their own gain

Not that I have any good feelings towards the Mannings, but Martin doesn't have the qualifications to be a candidate in the first place. No need to sabotage anything with him.

My theory on hiring alums as coaches is simple. If you're only considering them because they're an alum, back off. Maybe they will some day become a good hire and they may be interested then. If they're only considering working for you because they're an alum, you might be in business. You need only look at our last hires for an example of each. Preemptively answering nitpickers, Hoke is a coaching alum. Same thing in my book.

At this point, Brady Hoke might actually be considered. They’ve been turned down by coaches at schools who are nowhere near the level of prestige that Tennessee is. When coaches at schools like Duke, Purdue, and nc state turn you down, it may honestly be time to focus on stabilizing the program and athletic department for a year. Then next year they’ll have a jump on all other programs and might be able to land someone who could do well.

So as much as we all like to hate MSU (pesky little buggers), why doesn't Mark D ever get mentioned as a possible for these bigger programs? Age, he won't move, what is it? The guy can actually coach and I'd think at some point he'd like to give himself the opportunity at a real program.

It can't be age; Stoops is 57, while Leach is 56. Miles is 64, and his name gets trotted out for every vacancy.

You'd think with his record Stoops would be the first name on the list for any major P5 spot that's open, regardless of whether he wants to coach again or not.

he won't coach again. It doesn't take long for any search committee to confirm that. Most schools use a hiring service. They aren't going to recommend people with no interest.

Unlike Gruden, Stoops doesn't want his name out there. It's probably the same with Dantonio. If he wanted to use it as leverage for a raise, he could have his name associated with various job openings.

Since when does "not wanting your name out there" prevented speculation? Harbaugh doesn't want his name out there either, but that hasn't prevented both media idiots and average fans from constantly throwing his name out for vacant NFL jobs.

In Tennessee's case, there wasn't even a search committee to confirm anything with Stoops, one way or the other. Not sure there was with ASU, either.

This isn't to say that Stoops hasn't decided he's permanently retired, but the media being what it is, it's strange that his name isn't being floated. Maybe Stoops thinks of the OK job as the pinnacle of the college coaching profession and coaching anywhere else is a demeaning step down, but if I were the AD at Tennessee or FSU I sure as hell wouldn't let that stop me from aggressively going after him.

Stoops is done. Part of the reason why coaches' names get mentioned in connection with searches before there has been any contact (or, in some cases, before the previous coach has even been fired) is that their agents float their names to the media. The fact that Stoops' name hasn't come up indicates that he's probably on a golf course somewhere and having a good laugh at this shit show the same way we are.

You might as well let Hoke give it a shot and then roll with a proper search. Also, Hoke is a solid recruiter. He could absolutely find those Mo Hurst-types that will come to wherever has a major D1 program because they've been overlooked.

Since they've made it clear they'll fire an AD who tries to hire Leach, I'm pretty sure it won't be Leach.

Fans love Leach. University presidents do not. He's a lawyer with a documented history of crappy behavior around contract negotiations who sued a prior employer for wrongful termination and took it all the way to the state supreme court.

I'm skeptical about Sumlin too. While he may be a better coach than some of the other candidates, he just got fired by another school in the conference for a disappointing performance. Takes swallowing a lot of pride for UT to go that route.

I'd take a look at Mike Norvell, but he probably ends up at Arkansas. I'm sure Fulmer has someone in mind. He could take another run at a coach that turned Currie down since the job is a little more attrctive than it was a week ago.

Personally I think it would be a smart move to give him the keys and run the show.

People make mistakes and Michigan is not an easy place to coach at. Give him a shot!

They have fulmer now. People respect him. They will have a coach they want by the end of the weekend or Monday. It will be at least a decent to good coach. For sure.

I'm looking around for a new job, and I'm officially making myself available for the Tennessee coaching position.  I've watched a lot of football, and I've heard a lot  of football.  I really like the sound of football.  I would also be an inexpensive candidate.  I'd be willing to take the job for only like half a million a year, with a tiny little buyout.  Pick me!  Pick me!

After the holidays. I need this goat rodeo in my life for a few more weeks, please. I’m hoping the fans get pissed after some insider type emails surface that prove Fulmer has been behind it all. Followed by some kind of mildly violent insurrection, nothing crazy, bloody noses and hurt feelings, a march on Rocky Top, and when all the smoke clears, Beth Mowins is the new coach. A guy can dream.
