Quadfecta Watch for this weekend

Submitted by SFBayAreaBlue on October 27th, 2022 at 2:07 AM

With three major rivalries, the odds are pretty low that the perfect weekend will happen where we win and all three of them lose.  But this weekend looks to have the best chance we've seen in a while.

Notre Dame is an underdog to Syracuse.

Michigan is a big favorite over MSU.

Unfortunately, Penn St. is an underdog to OSU despite playing at home.

Can any historians tell me if the Quadfecta has ever happened?  I know we've gone 3-1 a few times.

So (in order of scheduled game):

Notre Dame loses, Ohio State loses, and simultaneously Michigan wins while Sparty loses?

That would be a phenomenal college football weekend from Michigan's perspective.

I'm also curious about this. Has this ever happened? If so, when?

What about 3-1? If so, when?

For 3-0, I can only think of November 25th, 1995. (Michigan won, Ohio State lost in the Game; Sparty lost to Penn State; Notre Dame didn't have a game.)

Great day that was!

I was in AA for the game.  Remember hitching into a tailgate with a TV watching the last minutes of a Dan LaFevour led CMU march down the field on MSU and win (Antonio Brown was also on that CMU team).

Followed by my boys in Blue whooping Charlie Weis and Jimmy Clausen in a back and forth slug fest.  Really thought Tate Forcier was going to be the real deal after that game.

Must have been pretty hammered because I do not recall the OSU/USC game......

I'd rather see it happen on Nov. 26.

And it could. The key piece would be the Wolverines beating the Bucks. MSU plays at PSU that day, and Notre Dame is at USC.

Well, it seems as though, here, most are choosing to "cut off their nose to spite their face". Relative to Clemson jumping Michigan in the polls-Michigan fans should be rooting for ND. Relative to Penn State remaining in the running for a B1G Championship and CFP inclusion-Michigan fans should be rooting for OSU. Here, an OSU win does nothing to endanger Michigan's largest goals. The higher OSU is in the standings of the college football world when Michigan plays them the better. A Michigan win or narrow loss in Columbus at the end of November will be enhanced by an OSU win this Saturday. Here, I am rooting for Michigan's biggest and best interest-which include ND and OSU wins this weekend. This is a very easy call for me to make.

I think you're over-looking Michigan's odds of winning a 3-way tie-breaker at 1-1 with PSU and OSU. In that scenario, Michigan would be on track to take it on the basis of having Illinois on the schedule (ironic, but thus far true). And a 1-loss Big Ten champ is exceedingly unlikely to be excluded. PSU got excluded in 2016, but they had been (1) blown out by us and (2) also lost to Pitt.

So, I disagree with your nose-spiting premise. Our hearts and heads remain aligned; root against OSU.

Your analysis is more consistent with a pre 2000 pov which is to root only for what is best for Michigan. Emotions regarding rivals, like the OP’s post, should have nothing to do with rooting for or against rivals. Rather, we root for what is most likely to get us in the playoff.

1) Always root for a Big10 team in non conference play.  The only exception might be an undefeated ohio team.
2) It’s not clear in the case of OSU vs PSU. In a 3 way tie M might have an advantage. On the other hand, the loser of a close The Game among two undefeated teams has a good shot at the playoffs.  If Clemson loses  3) ND is down. We need a stronger ND to knock out Clemson.

Since some people have already pointed it out, for the lions fans out there, can we add in a lions win on Sunday to this? Seems like it would have had to happen but the lions I think add a bit more intrigue to the discussion with their ineptitude.

I believe its MGoPodcast lore that a Michigan win combined with Ohio State losses and a Michigan State loss (three outcomes) is the Michigan Trifecta and if you add a Notre Dame loss to it, its the Michigan Superfecta (four outcomes -- "quadfecta" isn't a thing).

This particular hypothetical week could produce the four outcomes but on only three games since Michigan plays one of the other relative parties.

The OP's thread title immediately made me think of the Quad Stacker from Burger King. Not really a BK fan, haven't been to one in years, but when I was in high school, hoo boy those were a huge go-to for me. Which probably explains why I was overweight in high school. Shoot, now I could really go for a Quad Stacker. Thanks, OP. Now my morning is ruined.

We'll see what we get from ND. They did go beat BYU the other week and I felt like they turned a corner, but then lost to Stanford and had an uninspiring UNLV win. Hoping they can do something, ANYTHING, against Clemson.

I don't have much faith in Penn State to pull off the upset. They're better equipped to handle OSU's passing attack than they were Michigan's running attack. I was listening to CFB Nerds Preview this week for OSU/PSU and I was shocked at how statistically mediocre PSU's rush defense was, even prior to the Michigan game. But their pass defense is up there, and they've got some dudes at corner, so who knows, maybe they can at least mitigate what OSU will try to do. But unfortunately, even if PSU's defense puts up a fight, I don't see their offense being able to do much. They had a generational talent with Barkley in that 2016 upset, and Penn State opted to play that game at night. For some reason, they didn't do that this year. A white out night game is probably worth a TD by itself for Penn State, but they did themselves no favors by making this a noon game. PSU always plays OSU close at home in those night games.

Probably wouldn't have mattered, but why not give yourself every possible advantage against arguably the best team in the conference?

One play, series, and game at a time.

A Blue Out seems quite appropriate for this team, and Michigan.   (Though, a Buckeye loss to Penn State really doesn't mean anything to determine the B1G East champ unless the Bucks lose a second game, which - I don't think they will do.   Though a Bucks loss in both this game, as well as @ Maryland, wouldn't cause me any angst.)

I went back as far as the 1997 season. It's only happened twice:

Sep 12, 2009: OSU lost to USC, MSU lost to CMU, Michigan beat Notre Dame

Oct 2, 2004 (edit): OSU lost to Northwestern(!), MSU lost to Iowa, ND lost to Purdue, Michigan beat Indiana

2018 we beat MSU and Purdue throttled OSU. 2011 Both MSU and OSU lost (MSU’s loss was to ND). That’s to my knowledge the last two times that occurred.

I’m thinking it happens this year last game of the year with USC beating ND, Penn St beating MSU, and the good guys winning in Columbus
