"Purdue sucks. And so does Michigan and Ohio State." -Curt Cignetti at Assembly Hall
Watching the Maryland-Indiana basketball game on BTN.
In the tradition of having your new football coach address the crowd at a basketball game, Curt Cignetti got on the mic and had some things to say.
"Purdue sucks. And so does Michigan and Ohio State."
Cute that you included us and the Buckeyes in your little speech.
Indiana's schedule in 2024 ends Michigan (H), OSU (A), Purdue (H).

Never heard of him.
December 1st, 2023 at 8:09 PM ^
His name means so little to me that I honestly couldn’t figure out why a new head coach at Maryland would call out Purdue.

Never heard of her.

He’s coached at JMU for a while. He’s probably actually a home run hire for IU, and old enough (60ish) to maybe stick it out there till he retires.
Somewhat competitive IU is always annoying. But just win.

A head coach who doesn't occasionally throw red meat out to the true believers ........ is not a fun head coach.
December 1st, 2023 at 7:40 PM ^
He didn't mention Penn State. Weird.
December 1st, 2023 at 7:44 PM ^
He's wise. One can't throw out too much red meat. Why insult a potential future employer, come 2026 or so?
December 2nd, 2023 at 12:41 AM ^
Cignetti will be 65 years old by then btw
December 1st, 2023 at 10:08 PM ^
He also made sure not to mention ND ... since a large portion of the IU basketball fanbase cheers for them in football.
December 1st, 2023 at 8:24 PM ^
A very good friend of mine is a JMU grad and has been to every football game for 30 years. His view of Cignetti is that he's a good recruiter but not a very good coach. He succeeds because he recruits staff as well as he does players. And Cignetti is taking all the key staff members with him, which is what pisses off the JMU alums (none of whom blame Cignetti himself for taking a new job at 10x the pay of the old).
Cignetti is 62 years old, so isn't going to be at Indiana longer than his current contract. He can afford to piss off a few traditional rivals
December 1st, 2023 at 10:05 PM ^
30 years of JMU games is damn impressive!
December 1st, 2023 at 11:26 PM ^
So.. he’s James Franklin?
December 2nd, 2023 at 12:13 AM ^
That's sorta the vibe I got. Maybe not quite so bad at in-game decisions as Frames.
December 2nd, 2023 at 12:22 AM ^
62 years old and no one has ever heard of him? Jesus. Sounds like a home run.

Does Indiana even have any of those ‘true believers’ left?
December 1st, 2023 at 7:40 PM ^
I love it. Shoot your shot.
December 1st, 2023 at 8:57 PM ^
Amusingly, the official Indiana Football twitter page apparently doesn't want to shoot that shot. The official video edited the 'best' part out... lol

Are we rivals with Indiana now also?
December 1st, 2023 at 7:43 PM ^
Well…good luck to him anyway
December 1st, 2023 at 7:44 PM ^
Aim high I guess. It's going to be tough on Ohio State when he beats them.
December 1st, 2023 at 7:50 PM ^
11wieners will really bitch about Cign-gate when that happens.
I'll show myself out.
December 2nd, 2023 at 10:06 AM ^
Make more sense once I listened to it. Sort of sounded like he was saying 'we're gonna beat purdue... and also be at the top of the conference!'. Won't happen, but doesn't hurt to dream big
December 1st, 2023 at 7:50 PM ^
Indiana is 2-42 in their last 44 games against Michigan. They are 2-60-1 in their last 63 games against Ohio State.

yes Carter caught that pass; and Corso caught the pass before it. a memorable event to see live. all those years later

Greatest radio call ever.
December 1st, 2023 at 8:06 PM ^
Was there a winning streak before either of those? Only curious because you give different number of games for each.
December 1st, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
Kind of. I cut them off at the point where the dominance briefly subsided. Going past those 44 games, Michigan was only 5-4 in the previous nine. And Ohio State was only 4-3 in the seven games preceding those 63.
Both series histories are ugly though, regardless of where you cut it off:

Curt Cignetti caught on a hot mic during the Harbaugh handshake next year - "You lucky we ass."
December 1st, 2023 at 7:51 PM ^
Meh... Whatever... Am I supposed to care about what JMU's coach thinks? Or Indiana's coach, for that matter? Because I don't.
Congrats, Curt - you have a cool P5 job now. Good luck with it...

You can't whine Indiana into basketball edit: or football, relevancy
December 1st, 2023 at 7:57 PM ^
Is this his version of Jim Tressel's speech at a basketball game right when he was hired?
December 1st, 2023 at 8:30 PM ^
As much as it pains me, Tressel at least had a degree of subtlety and bravado during his obligatory “new football coach makes contrived statement during early home basketball game” speech.
This, however, is the equivalent of the douchey neighborhood kid calling you names and then speeding off on his Huffy.
Color me unimpressed…
December 1st, 2023 at 9:37 PM ^
And Ohio State had a competitive history. They may have gone through a few down years against Michigan prior to that but Ohio State had expectations of winning for a reason.
December 1st, 2023 at 7:58 PM ^
I'll bet Sparty looks on longing for this type of talk. Their new coach said nothing controversial.
December 1st, 2023 at 8:35 PM ^
Meh, they kind of need this current low-profile style coach to lay low for a minute to wash their hands of the Tucker situation.
Speaking of washing hands, hope Tucker took on a more literal approach to this metaphor.
December 2nd, 2023 at 12:29 AM ^
I thought the Sparty hire was actually a good one. Not sure they will appreciate someone who works hard, keeps to himself and doesn’t sexually harass women, but we will see.
December 1st, 2023 at 8:00 PM ^
Haha, what will that say about Indiana after they lose to all 3 next year... again.
December 2nd, 2023 at 12:32 AM ^
He will sound like Foghorn Leghorn just like Tom Allen did this season.
December 1st, 2023 at 8:00 PM ^
Nothing he says is going to make any difference in Indiana's fortunes against Michigan.
December 1st, 2023 at 8:01 PM ^
Clearly delusional. Now I understand why he took the gig.
