Presidents Trophy Curse Lives On

Florida beats Boston in game 7 4-3 in OT. The Presidents trophy curse is a real thing and lives in Boston this year.

I think it's more reflective of the fact that there's not a ton of gap between the top teams in the NHL. A random crap shoot is the NCAA tournament where it's one and done and sometimes 4 seed Yale wins it all. Best of 7 series is about as variance smoothing as you can get without just declaring the President's Cup winner the champion and foregoing a tournament

A crazy game and a remarkable ending.  Boston going out in the first round after setting a regular-season record for wins and points is bananas.  I thought they could lose in these playoffs but absolutely never expected the Panthers to be the team.

I'm leaving Blueisgood's thread up on the MGoBoard and deleting mine.  Because I wasn't able to complete my OP prior to the winning OT goal, his thread title makes more sense than mine.

On the one hand, I hate Boston fans and I hate Marchand with a passion. And I also hate Lucic (yes I realize he hasn’t been there in years). But I like Bergeron and Pasta is great to watch. On the other hand, this means we have to suffer through at least one more series of a Tkachuk brother. I don’t get how their dad raised two shitheads like that. I don’t remember him in a bad way at all. This was a series where I wished both teams would lose.

Nothing against most of the Bruins on an individual level, but I like seeing all the Boston teams lose.

I was probably traumatized by the Pistons' early stumbles against the Celtics. Then we all had to endure "Red Sox Nation" (which I'll never understand). If it weren't for Brady I probably would've disliked the Patriots, too.

Yeah, I probably should passionately dislike the Maple Leafs too, but being that the closest I've ever lived to Detroit was either Midland or Battle Creek, I just haven't built up a lifetime of hatred towards them.

OTOH, I find that hating the Avs is every bit as easy and natural as hating aOSU and hating Staee!

I may be in the minority on this but I wish the Wings were still in the western conference. I miss the rivalries with the Avs and Blackhawks. I just don’t have that much hatred for TOR, MTL or TBL. Plus the Wings kicked ass in the WC. Sure, staying up to 1 AM for some road games sucked on occasion but I’d take that if it meant the Wings were competing for Cups again and playing meaningful games.

Vegas, Dallas, and Colorado are all very good and I think you're sleeping on all of those teams. They will be good teams for a while and have good cores.

Wings played 35 games against the West this year. They won 17 in regulation, lost 12 in regulation, and lost 6 in OT. I have always hated getting a point for OT. They scored 115 goals against the West while giving up 114.

Against the West's top 4 teams, they played Colorado twice, lost both games in regulation, scored 4 goals, and gave up 11. Against Dallas, they played 2 games, and lost 1 in regulation and lost 1 in OT. Scored 3 goals, gave up 9. Against Edmonton, they played twice, won 1 in regulation and lost one in regulation. Scored 7 goals and gave up 9. And against Vegas, same record as Edmonton, but they scored 4 and gave up 6.

These aren't exactly outcomes that are making think the Wings would compete or do appreciably better in the West. Like bottom line, I don't think the roster as constructed is a cup contending team or even a team that could come close to doing what Florida just did.

Wings are still trying to get out of the mess Holland and Co. left them in (I realize he had his mandates). I guess I just don't really value making the playoffs as an 8 and getting trounced. I'd rather patiently rebuild. That really only began in earnest in with the 2019-2020 season.

The East matchups are certainly not as intense as Colorado, Chicago and others, but I think that's just a reflection of how much the Wings have sucked in the East.

It only took a few playoff series to suddenly have issues with Phoenix, Anaheim and San Jose. Same will happen with East teams whenever the Wings get back into the playoffs on a regular basis. I can't wait for Detroit-Toronto to become a thing again. Detroit still owes them for 1993. F'in' Borschevsky....

i'm kind of rooting for toronto.  as a wings fan i realize there is some rivalry there, but + 1 original six team; +1 haven't won since dinosaurs roamed the earth; +1 love those old time, non-gimicky uni's.

as an aside, seattle just scored on the avs in game 7.  go seattle, avs should lose for the next century or two.  they're the buckeyes of the NHL, at least for us wings fans.

Now time for me to root for Seattle. Not only do I still hate the Avs, but my niece and her husband live in the Seattle metro area and share a set of season tickets with another couple.

GO KRAKEN!

I am not from Michigan, so I don't have the same passionate hatred of the Avs (except for Lemieux, of course), but MacKinnon and Rantanen were the only guys really stepping up, so they didn't really deserve to win.  Seattle played much more of a team game, and Grubauer was just awesome to watch.

I normally don't root for expansion teams (they should have to wait 50+ years to win the cup, if ever, like my Sabres), but I like what Seattle has done, and they have Beniers.  The only downside is that the Eberle hit on Cogliano was so dirty and dangerous.  He should have been suspended, IMO.

At least the winner this year will be someone that hasn't done it in a while.
