Potential staff addition twitter stalking

Submitted by UMICH1606 on

Just something to keep an eye on with the 10th assistant coming or perhaps maybe even someone on staff will be reassigned to RB coach. I know Webb has been saying it is a possibility, but Sam Webb, Chengelis, Chris Evans, and JKP started following former OL coach and current Indiana OL coach Greg Frey on Twitter.

when you look to balance the responsibilities of the coaches. We are going to be adding a 10th coach in April, if the new rule passes as is widely expected.

Drevno is not only the OC, but he is coaching the most positions. While I was expecting tp get a RB coach now and a line coach later, getting the best candidate now is hard to argue with. If the tenth coach rule doesn't pass, maybe Drevno takes the TEs and Jay H is our new RB coach?

Magnus is right. Plus see my other post about succession planning. Frey is a great coach, maybe not a great recruiter. Helped establish IU's run game to be near top of the B1G, with way less quality recruits than most. Pair him with a really young RB coach who is a great recruiter/teacher and you have new life for the run game in 2017.

Perhaps in my advancing years I have misremembered those years but for some reason I don't recall us being upset over the O line play under RR. I sort of remember the D being somewhat less than stellar.

But then again I'm old so maybe I've got things mixed up.

WD isn't familiar with him either. He was in the womb when Frey was here. He's just acting like a child, which of course he is. Frey would be a great addition. He's one of the best at coaching lineman and he's a genuinely great guy. All I hear at IU is good stuff about him and I've had the pleasure of working with him before. He'd be an A plus hire.

but a few minutes later said "red tape" was preventing his being able to announce it just yet.

However, both Ira and Sam just a couple minutes ago were talking about Harbaugh won't necessarily be restricted to hiring a former RB to coach the running backs, which lends credence to the twittering about Frey being hired.

I don't have any idea about whether Frey will be good or bad at coaching RBs, but he's a damn good OL coach. The intriguing thing is that hiring Frey would provide a ready OL coach on staff should Drevno leave.

They just approved (or will soon) the 10th full-time assistant. Wheats departure puts us at 8 on staff. Frey would make 9, leaving room for one more hire. Someone may have to coach the RB's in spring, depending on when the rule goes into effect, but we will soon be able to add yet another coach who could specialize in running backs.

I was guessing that the breaking news Sam and Ira were alluding to on the radio this morning was about the spring practice bombshell that is expected to drop.  From what I was able to pick up here and elsewhere this week, there was a vote that was supposed to happen Thursday (by whom regarding what - I have no idea) and that big news would potentially be announced Friday at the earliest.

Sam's teases about breaking news felt related to whatever that is.

At first I thought it might be related to signing of the stars because he said the breaking news was "fun," which I inferred as meaning it wasn't recruiting related. I wouldn't think it would apply to additions to the coaching staff, but then out of nowhere they started talking about how Harbaugh doesn't have to choose a RB to coach the running backs.

Maybe it's a special deal on Scout membership.

He's probably a pretty good OL coach, the lines at IU were always solid. I don't know if that's a product of Frey or a biproduct of Wilson, who's a former line coach.

I mean he was clearly Rich Rod's best assisitant here, and he has developed pros at Indiana and their run game is always pretty dang good. I wouldn't hate his potential addition myself. He teaches the zone scheme though, so would it lead to a philosophy change is the only question. Those can be tricky.

I'm not seeing the problem with this.  He was good here and has been good with Indiana.  He recognizes talent well and gets them to play at a high level.  Does he have a personality flaw / controversy I'm unaware of?

Frey was a Broyles Award nominee in 2015 after doing a great job with Indiana's OL. He was also one of our ace recruiters during the Rich Rodriguez years, and he put together some solid offensive lines with mediocre talents like Perry Dorrestein, David Moosman, Mark Ortmann, etc.

So we could hire a RB coach and add a second OL coach. Frey has coached many NFL OL in his career, from WV to UM to IU. Just sayin. I mean he's made two Indiana OL recruits into All Big Ten players and NFL linemen. That's astonishing.

Indiana has churned out some good O linemen , Spriggs, and I think they got another good one this year coming to the draft

Dan Feeney is probably even better than Spriggs, but played hurt and out of position a lot this year. He's a starting NFL guard. Frey also had Lewan, Omameh, Schofield, and Molk (though much of his molding was done under Carr) go pro while at Michigan. He had an All-American at West Virginia as well, Ryan Stanchek.

He's also an excellent recruiter, is from Florida and played at FSU.

We could double up from Indiana and grab their RB coach also. He seems to have done a pretty good job of "coaching up" lower rates backs and getting guys to the league.

Back in 2015, 247 had his ranked as the #141 recruiter in the nation.  This is not me saying he is a bad recruiter, just posting something I read.  Also, working at Indiana is bound to reflect on your ability to recruit.

http://247sports.com/Article/Top-recruiters-in-Big-Ten-football--349022…

KEVIN JOHNS, Indiana
National rank; 133
Big Ten rank: 19
Number of commitments: 7
Highest rated commitment: Three-star wide receiver Leon Thornton
Next IU coach in the rankings: Greg Frey (141)
Details: Johns is the primary recruiter on Thornton, and is also the secondary recruiter on offensive tackle Brandon Knight – who is ranked slightly higher than Thornton in the 247Sports Composite.
