Potential staff addition twitter stalking

Submitted by UMICH1606 on

Just something to keep an eye on with the 10th assistant coming or perhaps maybe even someone on staff will be reassigned to RB coach. I know Webb has been saying it is a possibility, but Sam Webb, Chengelis, Chris Evans, and JKP started following former OL coach and current Indiana OL coach Greg Frey on Twitter.

"You know, I always heard great things about Lloyd Carr. When I came here, I looked forward to meeting him. But I've been here two years, and I still haven't met him."

-Greg Frey, as told to and quoted by John U. Bacon, in "Three and Out"

I don't have a problem with Frey being added to the staff, but if he invites me to a wedding I will pass.

Frey & Drevno are too similiar - we don't need 2 of them on staff - even if they're both good.

We need a true RB coach who can relate to these kids.

Someone to fill Wheatley's shoes so to speak...

I would prefer Hart or Wilcher to Frey.

Can't say I understand some people's kneejerk opposition to the Greg Frey who was our former O-Line coach and not the mediocre Ohio St. quarterback.  By all accounts, he made chicken salad out of chicken shit both here and at Indiana.  Is the only knock on him the fact that he was part of the failed Rich-Rod era?  I mean it's fair to say you win and lose as a team, but by that logic you'd also turn up your nose at Brandon Graham and Mike Martin magically becoming eligible to play DT here again, given that they were part of some really mediocre defenses under Rich-Rod.

We have a lot of young guys on the line, more coaching can only help.

I know Jay Harbaugh is Special Teams, not sure I would want to move him from SP, but maybe he takes over the running backs? I feel like he can coach several offensive positions.

I posted a Diary yesterday about the state of the OL and in it you can see what Frey did with guys like Omameh, Lewan, Schofield, and Molk under RichRod.  It was arguably our least painful position group during a brief year or two there - which isn't something you can say about any other year out of the last 15.

He did well at Indiana and WVU as well.  I like his Florida ties.  I like that he's at least familiar with Michigan.  I like that he has a ton of experience coaching our worst position group right now.  I like that he knows Wilson's offense for games against OSU.  Hell, I even like mending the fence to the RichRod era a little rather than pretending it didn't happen.

The one thing I can't figure out is how they'd mesh his zone-style with what Drevno/Harbaugh like to run.  Likewise, if you take that position group away from Drevno isn't that a big demotion when you consider he's also sharing OC duties with another NFL guy?

If I'm picking up what the Scout guys are putting down (Sam Webb, Allen Trieu).  They are saying that Harbaugh will shuffle a current staff member to RB coach and bring in another new coach who they say is a great hire and a well known name.   IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST

Frey seemed to do a nice job with young linemen in his first go round. That could be huge for us, as we will have a young line next season. I actually didn't hate Funk when he was working with upperclassmen; I think he was good at really crafting guys games, but he was dreadful with the young guys. He was probably a bad teacher, or he was better at the minutiae and worse at the fundamentals. Frey doesn't have that problem. He would also lessen the load on Drevno, allowing him to focus more on his OC duties. That's another plus.

I'm thinking if our O line coach cant handle his job then fire his ass and get one who can. We have very very talented RB's who need a great teacher who can take them to the next level. Lets not have someone coaching the RB position when thats not his strong suit. The risk is that our talented stable of RBs wont grow. Hire a great former RB or RB coach to teach these boys properly.

I don't think that entirely true, particularly if we want to improve the running game. We have several RB's that have a lot of promise, and you might even say have an NFL future. They deserve someone who can give the kind of wisdom that will make them great. Hard to imagine someone who hasn't played RB or coached the position at all could give them that. That's what made Wheatley a good fit because he was great as a player and had experience as a coach. Great players make the best coaches. Just ask Harbaugh about his success with quarterbacks. Dont know if TE is a position that harder to teach or not, but I do know the running game is nearly always 50% of an offense and Michigan has always been known for its run first mentality.

Finally, as I look at other schools Alabama, OSU, Clemson, Penn State and Wisconsin each of whom have great running games, I notice that all of thier RB coaches are highly experienced and Black. What that tells me is, these coaches relate better to the RB position and recruits because the best RB prospects are  . . . you guessed it, Black. Moreover, they have been since the early 1970's. My guess is Black coaches who are former RB's relate better with recruits and their parents than do white ones who never played or coached the position. Not playing the race card but unless there is a new trend that I havent seen, why would we handicap ourselves against the very schools we are trying to overtake?

Nothing like going on a racist binge, right?  But you said you weren't being racist, so I guess its okay.

"Hard to imagine someone who hasn't played RB or coached the position at all could give them that."

I think everyone on this board will remind you that JayBaugh never played TE, never coached TE, never recruited, never coached a position at all - anywhere, and was near universally thought of as a nepotism hire.  Despite all that, I think the TE's have turned out okay...  ST's weren't so bad, either, this year.

But you go right on with the non-racist racism you got working there...

Not really a racist binge as much as a reality binge. I knew this would be contoversial to say but the truth is the truth.  Most RB coaches at the major powerhouse schools are black and so are the RB's themselves. I didn't make it that way, football made it that way, so don't be mad at me for stating what lots of people think.and obviously the game of football has bought into. Dating back to 1980, what percentage of Michigans RB recruits have been Black?  Who knows, Jay Harb may have more in common with black families and these 5* recruits and maybe he out-recruits Clemson, Bama, OSU etc. I certainly hope so.

Truth is its knida sad that a  "Michigan Man" who has given soooo much to his alma mater as a player, recruiter and coach was not seen as a priority to keep around when he is equally if not more qualified than some of the guys who are being fast-tracked up the coaching ladder. Just my non-racist racism but I bet a lot of black people see it that way too. Am I wrong for saying somrthing about it or are you for keeping quiet?
