Podcasts While Quarantined And/Or Working From Home

Seeing Seth post the new MGoPodcast Teams: 1918 gave me the idea of talking about some of the podcasts I'm listening to while stuck at home. Feel free to let me know what you think of my selections and let me know of any you are listening to. All of these are available on multiple podcast outlets, but I listen to all of these on Spotify.

Sports (Even in this current time with no sports):

Pardon My Take: This is a must-listen Podcast. It's a great mix of sports with comedy and they are great with their interviews. Their most recent episode even had an interview with now-famous Dr. Fauci regarding Coronavirus.

Ryen Russillo Podcast: I personally love Russillo and truly value his sports takes. His most recent episode has Big Cat from Pardon My Take as well as Chris Long where they do a draft of 10 bands each to create their own fantasy music festival.

Sports Criminals: This is a new one I discovered where two men go through various criminals in the sports world. They've done 2-episode features on athletes such as Oscar Pistorius and Chris Benoit. In March, they are releasing one 5-minute episode a day that is a short-feature on a different criminal event in sports.

Cover 3 Podcast: This is a college football podcast with Tom Fornelli, Chip Patterson, and Barton Simmons. During the season, they do betting locks but in the off-season they are answering hypothetical college football questions and going over off-season news.

Comedy/History/Pop Culture

The Dollop: This podcast has been around for a while now and have over 400 episodes. This features one comedian telling the story of a usually unknown person/event to another comedian. They usually do some improv and make jokes throughout. If you do choose to listen to this one, I highly recommend starting with their 12th Episode: The Rube.

Small Town Murder: This follows the same format as the Dollop as one comedian tells a story to another comedian. The difference is that this one picks out murder stories from small towns in the USA and the stories are ridiculous. They start out by giving details on the town and then go into the story, making jokes as they go. The episodes for this one are usually 2-3 hours so if you really have some time to kill, this is a great one.

Office Lades: If you love the tv show The Office, you'll love this podcast. It has Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey who were on the show going episode-by-episode to give details that they remember from filming. They also usually have a guest for each episode that is another cast member.

Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend: This is basically Conan interviewing celebrities as he does on TV, but more in-depth and with no censorship. It's a great chill podcast.

In Bed with Nick and Megan: This is very similar to Conan's podcast. Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally interview other celebrities that go in detail most interviews do not.

JJ frequently used to call in to the Domino’s I worked at in Bloomfield Township when I was in high school and order a pizza. It was fun to hear his voice, because I was a fan of his show too.  Sausage and green peppers, coming right up!

All Fantasy Everything: If you want to hear a bunch of comedians - usually Ian Karmel, Sean Jordan, David Gborie and a guest - do fantasy drafts of all sorts of random topics (Taco Bell Menu, Unconventional Bangers, Commercial Ad Jingles), this is your bet.

Here's my list:

Fun:

Hard Core History and Hard Core history addendum. Dan Carlin is by far the best history podcaster I know about. Maybe the best podcaster. If you haven't listened to him and are a history fan, I'm jealous and you should take this time to get aquainted. Maybe start off with some of his for purchase older things (available on itunes) like ghosts of the ostfront or Wrath of the Kahns.

History on fire. Good, not as good as Carlin but good.

Lore: Interesting tidbits of history and lore.

Unexplained: Like Lore, but a bit more mysterious.

Haunted AF: New to this, but it's good Lots of listener stories.

Ghosts in the Burbs: Great stories, well delivered.

The Cold War; what we saw.  I like it alot, but I keep having to fact check it.

Hillbilly Horror Stories: Great paranormal stories.

Graveyard Tales: Paranormal stories, they read them to you. Awesome chemistry between the hosts.

CBS Mystery THeater/Old Time Radio I love old time radio. 'Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men....'

Daily Wire/Ben Shapiro - sometimes it's good. Sometimes it's loud and sucks. I prefer Shapiro in debates; on the podcast sometimes he sounds like he's on coke.

Joe Rogan: He has excellent interviews. I disagree with him on many issues but I love his willingness to talk to people.

BBC Alistar Cookes Letters to America: A history teacher put me on him in the 80's and I loved it. These are collections of his letters to America going back to the 70s.

BBC Voices of the Great War: Interviews by the Imperial War Museum of British vets. Great.

Sports:

Locked On Wolverine PodCast  I really like Isiah Hole and his takes.

Michigan Man podcast Okay??? Great quality, sometimes a bit milquetoast for me.

In the Trenches: Love Jansen

News:

several Economist/BBC feeds. I think the media here just is so clickbait-ey and too close to the respective parties. This isn't perfect but I think better.

Religion/philosophy:

Word on Fire, Robert Barron - Bishop Barron is a smart, smart dude. Excellent to listen to.

Called to Communion, Dr. David Anders - like Bishop Barron, but easier to listen to.

Catholic Answers. - Trent Horn is my favorite host.

True Crime:

Don't talk to strangers and You know they knew are two that cover the Oakland County Child Killer. Scary, and so very sad if you have kids. But I'm hooked because I remember my Mom warning me about him and being careful on the way to the bus stop years afterward.

I found out that in the 70's there was a child pedophilia ring on North Fox Island run by a rich dude from down state. How a person can do that.....

Coffee with Scott Adams. Scott is an independent who has some of the most interesting takes due to his background in persuasion. He keeps it positive and upbeat.

Also the Naval podcast series is fantastic - focuses on how to get rich. Naval Ravikant might be one of the top 5 or 10 smartest people in the world.

Mike Duncan's Revolutions podcast is incredible!

Both in-depth and very entertainingly explained, he details all the major (and some minor) events, people, places, and effects of every European revolution from The English Civil War up to his current chapters about the Russian Revolution. His History of Rome podcast is similarly badass, I just personally prefer the Age of Revolutions era over nearly any other in history.

Shameless Plug for my wife.

Vault Studios puts out some great true crime podcasts.  They have a few  multi- part podcasts:

The Officer's Wife

Bardstown

They also have a weekly half-hour podcast.

True Crime Chronicles

My wife is the female voice on True Crime Chronicles and was heavily involved in the other 2 but not the narrator.

All of these are pretty popular, but...:

BBC Newshour - 45 minute daily news update during shower, shave, etc.

WTF - Marc Maron's personality isn't for everyone, but he interviews plenty of A-listers and people behind the scenes for a solid 45 minutes. Springsteen, Louis CK, Beastie Boys, Mavis Staples, Bourdain, Irwin Winkler was good, Aaron Sorkin, Rob/Carl Reiner, Sacha Baron Cohen, Obama, Letterman, recently Brad Pitt and Leo. Hearing the 20-year paths of regular dudes like Jon Bernthal and Walton Goggins turn into famous people is pretty interesting and in some ways relatable

Serial - really popularized the format of serialized limited series crime podcast, was released live weekly. High school girl is murdered, ex-bf convicted. Is he really guilty? Lots of interviews and piecing together what happened that day, updates re: ongoing court appeals

Cold - Powell case in Pac NW, Mormons, a bizzare family, missing wife presumed murdered. Lots of media coverage. The husband later does something terrible. Tons of recordings made by the husband and his weirdo dad.

Bear Brook - use of current DNA techniques to unravel old cold cases. Barrel found in the woods, woman and child. Years later, another barrel found nearby with more bodies.

S-Town - begins as true crime, becomes deep dive into persona of this eccentric southern dandy who is a master clockmaker in deep south Alabama and his possible hidden family fortune

Catch and Kill - by Ronan Farrow, who broke the Harvey Weinstein story (and is the son of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen... or is it Frank Sinatra?). By digging into the Weinstein case, it becomes clear there is a tactic used by powerful people to have media outlets buy exclusive rights to people's stories using NDAs, which are then buried by those media companies that are loyal/bought by those powerful people. Other tactics like intimidation of family members, etc.

If anyone is into video games, there are three podcasts I frequently listen to:

The Game Informer Show - editors from the magazine discuss industry news and new games, and respond to community emails

MinnMaxx - Similar to the GI Show in structure, as it was made by former GI guys

Easy Allies - Former GameTrailers guys talk games, trailers, and have a lot more recurring segments/bits

The Hiphop Digest- The hosts discuss Real hiphop from a grown man and veteran’s perspective. Excellent show.

Take It Personal Radio - Excellent mixing by DJ 360 and the music is geared towards independent and underground hiphop. Excellent interviews with established underground MCs.

Heat Rocks - For the music nerd who likes to discuss their favorite albums in detail. Various guests of all backgrounds.
