Pitino’s Hubris

Submitted by lastofthedogmen on March 21st, 2021 at 10:17 AM

Based on the article’s headline I sort of expected a story of soul-searching growth. I was mistaken. He now no longer has to worry about who he can trust. I guess it’s possible to be self-referential without being self-aware.

Personal growth is more uncommon in people when they are in their 60s, versus in their 50s, 40s, 30s, 20s, etc ....

That's not a universal rule --- some people grow the most when they're in their 80s.  But it is rarer.

I'm not sure what one expected out of Pitino.

I'm not there quite yet but I can tell you some of the joys of being a 61 year old male:

1. I'm now 6'4", used to be 6'5" so yes, I'm shrinking

2. I work out every day to just not put on any weight.  It's like pushing a bolder up a steep hill - once you stop pushing it up, it rolls right back to the bottom.  I'm still amazed I was able to eat fast food, buffets, what-have-you for years and not weigh 600 pounds.  If I did that today I think I would.

3. My freaking toenails keep cracking.  I truly hate this because when I put on socks the cracked nail seems to always get caught on the sock.

4. I can pee about 1/10 as far as I used to which is also frustrating.  Compounding that is when your brain sends the signal down "ok guys, were done here" my dick says "oh no we're not" about half the time so my choice is to stand there for a long time hoping all is well only to get unpleasantly surprised about half the time.  This becomes especially problematic when wearing light colored pants.

Now there's lots of upsides to age, most notably things that used to REALLY bother me I no longer give a shit about so I'm much calmer.  Used to be when Michigan lost an important game I couldnt sleep for several days - now I'm like "who wants more nachos?" about 30 seconds after the game ends and never think of it again.

I turn 60 tomorrow, so can pretty much co-sign nearly all of this.

Except, alas, that I have not shrunk to 6'4". I used to be 5'8" if I stood up really straight, though.

I can still pee my name in the snow, but I have a three-letter name, so that's not saying much, and I use a smaller font.

Hear hear mGrowOld!

As a 68-year-old male I am in total agreement and alignment with points #2 and #4. I also used to live and die with Michigan football but with age comes perspective. My passion for Michigan remains as strong as ever but other  elements and aspects of life have taken on increased priority and focus as I’ve gotten older.

GO BLUE!!

Now on to the gym to work out!

I can verify that the comments above are directionally correct if not exactly experienced by myself.

I am 63, the extra minerals in Centrum Silver for Men are there for a reason.  All the multi-vitamins for old people have extra minerals.. Take them.  I suspect they help youngsters be more athletic but that is just my hypothesis.

If you eat a bag of spinach, you can do it at age 63. Spinach works when Viagra doesn't.  Eat green leafy vegetables.

Growth is daily if your goal is to get better every day.

I wasn't capable of real personal, internal growth until I was in my 40's. External forces made me grow in my 20's and 30's, but I don't think my ability to reflect on them was as fully formed until at least 42 or 43. I think Rick Pitino is just a narcissist with an unfettered ego.

“Pitino coached Louisville from 2001 to 2017, winning a national title and reaching three Final Fours and six Elite Eights.”

Am I missing something?  When the fuck did Louisville win a National Championship?

Vacated means just that.

He's a creation of entitlement, due solely to his ability to coach the game of basketball.  I'm just glad he's not my next-door neighbor.

Pitino:

"I now don't have to look over my shoulder and see who I'm going to trust, who I'm not going to trust."

It's pretty simple, Rick.  Let me help you though.

Who you should trust: definitely not the guy in the mirror.

Who you're not going to trust:  YOURSELF

As I've posted before, I read that he has 12 new players.

Considering that Iona didn't graduate 12 seniors, I'm curious how he persuaded Iona student-athletes to give up college scholarships, and how he managed to "recruit" higher level players to a non-"big-time" program.

I wonder if it involves what he calls "nobody bothering you," at a place where he "doesn't have to look over my shoulder."

Rick is tired of the big time.

All things big. He wants to retire to a small town, with small schools and small restaurants.

Even small gas stations. You know, the kind that have only two pumps.

The thing that gets me is, in 2013 was there ANYONE who actually thought Louisville was clean?

Everyone in basketball knew they were a dirty program.    But nothing was ever done about it until years later.

what he means to say is that he's got little or no media keeping an eye on him, so he can bag as many cocktail waitresses for personal or player use as he wants.
