Penn State Snowflakes: The Offense

This will be your thread for hot takes and snowflakes regarding the offense and offensive playcalling against PSU.

I think we'd have a better chance of playing like we did in the second half if the clear 4th down DPI against Tarik was called, or if the bomb to Nico wasn't called OPI which it clearly shouldn't have been. Both of those put us in great positions to score and take Penn State points off the board probably.

Of course, we still had chances to win and didn't pull through. But this is one of those games where you outplay the opponent but nothing's really in your favor otherwise. (Calls, Charbonnet tripping on the screen, tipped passes not being tipped towards our defenders etc...). You just have to be humble and move on.

The offense was shit in the first half but the second half was more of what I expected earlier in the year and gives some hope going forward if they can keep it up.

Nope. We have no idea. A flag may have been called, but - if you call that flag - you have to then call it on UM (which - spoiler alert - they didn’t on some big plays). So, pick your poison. In this case, all we know is they get a first down. At that point, the offense appeared completely bipolar. For all I know, the next two plays would have been runs up the middle only to lose yards.

Why the fuck did they wait until they were down by 14 halfway through the 3rd before they started running a competent offense?

Oh, yea, and CATCH THE MOTHERFUCKING BALL HOLY FUCKING SHIT

Yours isn't any better.

Bell is getting orders of magnitude more value out of being here than the cost of attendance. How much would a person off the street need to pay to use facilities and trainers as good as Michigan's? How much would you need to pay Gattis per hour to teach you WR skills?

Playing football at Michigan is basically an apprenticeship to the NFL. That is a hugely valuable thing.

A game where they put up 26 first downs and 417 yards of offense on a really good defense on the road and would have scored 30+ most likely without the bogus officiating in the first half. So I have to ask what the fuck game you were watching if you didn't think the offense showed a lot of progrsss and was generally solid.

I agree - There was effort in this game.  We lost a close one.  No blowout and finally had really good 2nd half adjustments.  I believe this game will put some confidence in the guys once they truly have time to take it all in.

I think we will beat ND and MSU after watching this game!

Michigan showed more heart in this game and looked better than they did in any other game.  Hoping this is where it clicks.  Go Blue!  ...and fuck the Irish.

You guys are acting like they just decided to be like "oh, let's start being competent on offense now" halfway through the 3rd quarter.

I'm assuming it's a combo of confidence and PSU clamming up.

The end of half offense is still atrocious.

Offense looked pretty awesome actually. I don't know what someone did with Shea and who replaced him at QB but that dude was awesome tonight. Run game did squat but PSU has a good run defense - it did enough. WR drops killed Sheas great game(!!!!!). I can't believe that happened.

Proud of the balls on those guys. Gutsiest road performance we've had in years

I'm not on here enough anymore to be a "Shea shit talker," but I'd still prefer to see Dylan over Shea.  One decent half in a losing effort probably doesn't change a lot of opinions on this topic.  That said, he certainly tried to make it happen, and falling short tonight in the end ultimately wasn't on him.

can’t bench Shea after tonight. They put the game on his back and he delivered. He forced Penn State’ D to back off its aggressive blitzing by making fast decisions and getting the ball out quick. He did this in both halves. That’s why the running game improved in the second half. I want to see what he can do next week.

That is 100% what is expected out of any QB at Michigan or any other school. Making the throw is ummmmmm like the #1 thing a competent QB should be able to do. Thats like saying the only thing required of an OL is to make a block...wtf!?!?

Offense showed up in the second half but I personally think it's time for me to find a new hobby. Between incompetence, referees, and choking, being a Michigan fan just simply isn't fun anymore.

I'm tired of watching Michigan find new ways to blow it year in and year out.

Good riddance! Except for the 2017 season Harbaugh has done well and this has been a very watchable program to be proud of. We are a tough spot in OT and a terrible performance by our third string QB away from being 2-2 against OSU and probably having two Big 10 titles. If you expect us to be Alabama right now, that's on you, not Harbaugh or the program.

I don't think it's "be Alabama" as much as it is "stop making ridiculous mistakes that lose the game to teams that Michigan should beat" and maybe a little of "we should be celebrating big victories right now, not explaining how if things went a little differently, they definitely would have won."

Look, except for about 4 programs, we are in the same boat as the other perennial top 20 programs. Look at some of the once mighty programs that would be happy to have the success we've had the last 4.5 seasons. USC, UCLA, Nebraska, Texas, Miami, Tennessee, the list goes on. And look at Georgia, Penn State, and Auburn. They haven't really accomplished much more than Michigan in the last 5 years, they've all had a bunch of tough losses, too. At least virtually every one of our losses have been against good to very good teams on the road.

I think we should have won more games and been more successful overall the last 4.5 seasons, but not a lot more successful. If we beat ND and OSU this year, I will be ecstatic and looking forward to next year. If we keep getting better every week from here on and out and win all the rest of our games except OSU, I'll be bummed, but feeling hopeful still. If you can't let go of losses and cheer the wins, you really do need to reevaluate. There is plenty to enjoy with this program, if you let the losses eat you up, you're doing this wrong.
