Over on Eleven Warriors: We Only Won Because Dickinson Got All the Calls

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on February 21st, 2021 at 4:07 PM

SO great to be tasting Buckeye tears today. Reading through the comments, one of the main sentiments seems to be that we got all the calls and that Hunter was able to get away with murder in the key. LINK.

They seemed to have missed the fact that every single charge/blocking foul went their way.

And you really need to read this preview. Quoting:

"Yeah, Michigan's stacked. Yes, they're a national title contender. Sure, they're probably going to win the Big Ten. But they're running into a Buckeye buzz saw today, and it ain't going to be pretty."

Homer site ignoring facts. Not really news. OSU has some really talented guys (Liddell, Washington) and a few guys who looked unready for the moment (Sueing, Ahrens). They are a good team. We are a better team.

They definitely put a defender on him that was told "do not let him get more than a foot away from you." He took 2 threes and 1 of them was an air ball if I remember correctly with Brooks (I think) in his shorts.

Since he isn't a ball handler and can't drive into the paint, it's basically playing 4 on 4 when he's out there. He hovers around the arc and his defender has to be there with him.

I’m not so sure any of them watched the game and just looked at the box score. They love pointing out the FT and foul disparity yet don’t seem to realize that fully half of Michigan FTs came in the last 38 seconds when OSU tried to extend the game.

I actually thought it was a relatively evenly called game. Block/charge calls are almost always going to frustrate, but as much as I hated the Dickinson call right before the half they kept it consistent and called the exact same thing on Liddell going into Wagner

I agree that it was a well called game.  They let a lot go, but it helped with game flow with two physical teams.

Dickenson was the difference in the second half as OSU doesn't have a big center that can match up (Key is 6-8).

I do find it ironic that mgoblog users are criticizing another fanbase of complaining about officiating.  That is a national pastime around these parts.

What?!? You think that was an evenly called game? Cartensen made about 5 straight calls for them in the first half alone. Liddell knocked the shit out of Wagner, Hunter didn’t even lower into Young like he does a lot of times. The oob call where they reviewed it and still got it wrong. Washington’s Jordan-esque push off. The one sided block/charge calls minus the Liddell one. Someone got an and one when the whistle blew they were on the ground still. Brooks chin shot for an and one. Brooks took a ton of illegal screens today. I could go on and on specifically but this was not evenly called man.

Yes I think it was a well called game.  I happen to have officiated a lot of basketball and appreciate the difficulty of the job.  All partisan fans can look at specific calls that they disagree with and there will always be a bad call either way.

OSU committed four more fouls (17-13) and UM shot 11 more free throws (24-13) so I don't think there is a lot to complain about, especially for a road game.

In the end Michigan was the aggressor, especially on the boards in the second half which led to the disparity in the foul statistics and in the game outcome.

I do think the Michigan cemented their #1 seed status and OSU acquitted themselves well and should be a #2 if they don't fall apart.  It was one of the more enjoyable games to watch I have seen this year.  But IMHO I don't think the officiating played a major factor benefiting either side.

Honestly,  yes they didn't call ticky tack ones on Dickinson.  And the free throws were even until the last two minutes.  I always get angry with the moving screens that are marginal as hell

But the one on Dickinson is not called on any level.  He was within one foot of the rim. -3

The Washington pushoff was bad too.. First the shoulder then the hand extended thats got to be called 90% of the time. -3

The Livers one I'm indifferent 50-50.  Live it looked offensive ..in slow motion it looked blocking

I hate the one on Wagner too.. He's moving at angle away from the basket and passing.  Guy steps in after or during the pass.  -2

The Mike Smith one that came after the livers one was only maddening because they just called the Livers one.

The Wagner - Liddell charge wasn't great but by that time .  they are awarding flopping

Oddly it was Carstenson who had two -three of the bad calls I consider him one of the best in teh Big Ten.

-8 points.. Gotta be 10 points better on the road.. Seems about right

Agree. Some of the calls I was hoping Michigan's way went against us, but obviously from 11 Warriors, it appears that OSU fans felt the same about their team). I love how rarely fans are able to even acknowledge how bias works. And we all have it! You notice the calls that go against you as unfair, whereas every call that goes in your favor was either "obviously correct" or "well, yeah, but it's about time, after they screwed us over so much up until now."

When I went to graduate school at UVA I met, during orientation, a guy who had gone there undergrad as well, and who patiently explained to me that it was "a well known fact" that referees in the ACC "hate Virginia." Right. I nodded.

There was a late call that was off of lidell and michigan got the ball because they said it was off him so not sure what you are talking about.

Him and livers battled and it clearly went off Liddell.  Michigan got the ball after the review

No, michigan did not get the ball.  The announcers said it was michigan ball because they looked at the replay but the officials have it to bucky.

The Lidell charge was to blatant to not call against him.  The rest of the block/ charge calls went against UM.

Foul disparity and free throws are because of last 2 minutes. Did you watch the game or just check the box score?

Exactly.  The announcers said it was Michigan ball because the replay clearly showed it going of Liddell.  But the refs blew it.

I thought the general tenor of how the game was officiated was fine--they didn't call a lot of cheap s*** and in general the around the basket play was called the same both ways.  But on block/charge calls, OSU got SEVERAL calls, with the most galling being the full discard of Brooks that wasn't called.   He got shoved so hard he slid about 10 feet across the floor.

There was another play where the Michigan defender was set for a full second and the OSU guy just rammed into him and it was called a block.

It's so great having such a physical big man. We've had a lot of centers who couldn't bang in the post very well. Moe was still very good because of his handling and 3s and craftiness but had a weakness. Morgan was good but not that big. Remember Courtney Sims?

The refs did their best to keep OSU in that game. Every block/charge went their way, basically gave OSU multiple And-1s, absolutely atrocious missed push off, phantom offensive foul on Dickinson, gave OSU possession on that ball that Liddell blatantly touched last even after a review, etc.

Oh FFS. You have got to be kidding me. I have to admit that down the stretch I felt like things were called pretty fairly, but the middle 20 minutes of the game were infuriating to watch as M got boned by the refs over and over again.

They might be the only fan base that believes that. Was on the Reddit bets page and could have swore it was MGoBlog for a hot sec. Lots of complaints about calls going for OSU.

What a bunch of stupid shitheads.  There were at least two obvious OSU offensive fouls that led to baskets and 3 point plays that were called defensive fouls.  There's 6 points minimum they shouldn't have gotten and I'm sure I missed a couple more.  And Dickinson got away with nothing that their players weren't getting away with too.

One of the biggest plays of the game at the time was the push off Washington gave Brooks and hit the step back 3; after Livers was called for doing the same thing in the first half.
