Otish: Durkin looking to run Meyer's offense at MD

Submitted by ak47 on

This is a little off topic but I think speaks to some things.  Durkin has worked on defense under both Harbuagh and Meyer.  The word coming out of MD is that Durkin is looking to run Meyer's offense for MD.  I think its a little telling which he believes is the harder offense to stop (shocker what he thinks given the last game).

We all love Harbaugh but damn if that isn't telling.

Exactly. You can replicate another coach's offensive framework. You can't replicate his mind. Harbaugh doesn't have some complex or gimmicky offense. He's great because of experience, preparation, identifying weaknesses, playcalling that builds upon itself, attention to detail, and so on.

There's also the issue of recruiting to Maryland vs Michigan and the fact that Harbaugh can coach up a QB in 1 year to be the best in the country vs pressure.

I think it's fair to say it's "easier" to install some form of the spread at the college level and have it be effective than install a pro-style offense like the one Harbaugh is installing. We know there are only a handful of teams running a pro style offense in the college ranks.

I thought I read somewhere that the type of offense was more or less mandated to him upon hire. Not sure where I saw that particular rumor though.

You're right.  I forgot about that.  Here's Maryland's AD back in October:

"We want someone that will come in here and excite the fan base," Anderson said. "I believe that, if we look at football today, the fans want exciting, wide-open offense. I think part of why we weren't successful these last six games is that we weren't able to open up the offense."

The tweet just said Maryland's preference was that he keep him on staff (obviously didn't happen). But the spread thing sounded like a mandate from up on high.

I can't find the tweet though so maybe I'm making the Locksley part up... why is it so hard to search tweets?

Or! It's a coach who understands his environment. His team sucks, the program sucks, if you want a chance to win you have to open it up and run wild.. Ala Bowling Green. The spread or triple option offense can level the playing field when you have inferior talent.

Or it may be an acknowledgement that Harbaugh's offense is quite complex and that he may not be well-versed in running it.  Spread offenses are often relatively simple to implement.

It'd actually make sense running Meyer's. Harbaugh's requires strength and patience, Meyer require speed. Edsall's offense last year featured more spread than power so Maryland has better personal for that offense. I'd stick with Harbaugh's offense. Look at Stanford and Alamaba, they can put poiunts up in no probelm.

Durkin's decision is probably what he thinks he can come closer to replicating at Maryland. That depends on who he thinks he can recruit and what coaches he can get. Whether it's easier to replicate Meyer or Harbaugh is irrelevant to what Michigan and Ohio State should do.

Maybe Harbaugh's is harder to replicate because Harbaugh is harder to replicate.  Who knows, but I wouldn't get excited about this.

That's not to say that I thought the OP's post was uninteresting.  I just don't think it's telling.

I think it may also be easier to get a spread offensive coordinator than a pro-style one.  I doubt it tells us much of anything beyond which system he's been around more and which one he thinks he may be able to recruit to(both in terms of coaches and players).

It probably fits personnel better. Their JR QB, Perry Hills ran for over 100 yards in three straight games, including 170 against OSU. Plus, if they can hold on to him, Dwayne Haskins, is still committed to Maryland. He's listed as a Pro Style Quarterback, but he's still pretty athletic for the QB position.
