Otish: Durkin looking to run Meyer's offense at MD
This is a little off topic but I think speaks to some things. Durkin has worked on defense under both Harbuagh and Meyer. The word coming out of MD is that Durkin is looking to run Meyer's offense for MD. I think its a little telling which he believes is the harder offense to stop (shocker what he thinks given the last game).
We all love Harbaugh but damn if that isn't telling.

I'm sure Mike D'Antoni is worried.

I thought Harbaugh's offense actually is pretty complex, with a larger-than-normal playbook.

Probably also has something to do with which offense is harder to run, rather than just which is harder to stop.

It may just be that Durkin thinks he won't be able to recruit/develop the O-Line talent that is needed to run Harbaugh's system. Or that he thinks you have to be a QB-developing coach like Harbaugh to run Harbaugh's system. And he is probably right on both of these.
December 4th, 2015 at 3:47 PM ^
Not to mention current personnel, the time it takes to develop a roster for a Harbaughfense, and the popular opinion that Durkin won't be at Maryland for the long haul.

"I think your additive is shaded that you want UM runs."
Huh?

This.
Their freshman QB is a good fit for that system as well.
RS Junior. I was waaaaaaaaaaay off.

There's also the issue of recruiting to Maryland vs Michigan and the fact that Harbaugh can coach up a QB in 1 year to be the best in the country vs pressure.

And the other thing

WhatEVER!

I thought I read somewhere that the type of offense was more or less mandated to him upon hire. Not sure where I saw that particular rumor though.
December 4th, 2015 at 3:45 PM ^
You're right. I forgot about that. Here's Maryland's AD back in October:
"We want someone that will come in here and excite the fan base," Anderson said. "I believe that, if we look at football today, the fans want exciting, wide-open offense. I think part of why we weren't successful these last six games is that we weren't able to open up the offense."
December 4th, 2015 at 3:47 PM ^
Yeah, I thought there was a tweet about Maryland wanting him to retain Locksley and run spread power (or some type of spread offense at least).
December 4th, 2015 at 3:56 PM ^
He isn't keeping Locksley.
December 4th, 2015 at 4:02 PM ^
The tweet just said Maryland's preference was that he keep him on staff (obviously didn't happen). But the spread thing sounded like a mandate from up on high.
I can't find the tweet though so maybe I'm making the Locksley part up... why is it so hard to search tweets?
December 4th, 2015 at 5:03 PM ^
What kind of AD is this guy? Is he a Brandon-style meddler?
December 4th, 2015 at 11:24 PM ^
He's a guy in debt looking to fill up a stadium with a bandwagon fan base in a town that only cares about the NFL. He's playing the hand he's been dealt.

Let this be a message to Indiana to not do anything stupid and get rid of Wilson. They have it better than they thnk they do.

Or it may be an acknowledgement that Harbaugh's offense is quite complex and that he may not be well-versed in running it. Spread offenses are often relatively simple to implement.
December 4th, 2015 at 3:43 PM ^
Probaly it. He's not an offenseive guy, so learning something easier would be the place to start then get a good coordinator to help you establish what offense to run.
December 4th, 2015 at 3:52 PM ^
In any event, I hope he holds true to this promise and runs an offense as similar as possible to OSU's. It would be good practice for us to face that offense earlier in the season.

December 4th, 2015 at 3:42 PM ^
It'd actually make sense running Meyer's. Harbaugh's requires strength and patience, Meyer require speed. Edsall's offense last year featured more spread than power so Maryland has better personal for that offense. I'd stick with Harbaugh's offense. Look at Stanford and Alamaba, they can put poiunts up in no probelm.
December 4th, 2015 at 3:43 PM ^
Yeah but does he have any fucking clue what Meyer's offense does? Evidence suggests otherwise.
This pisses me off
December 4th, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
This pisses every Michigan fan, or any true sports fan, off in general. Durkin is a traitor, who needs him. Who's got it better than us? NOBODY!
December 4th, 2015 at 3:43 PM ^
Durkin's decision is probably what he thinks he can come closer to replicating at Maryland. That depends on who he thinks he can recruit and what coaches he can get. Whether it's easier to replicate Meyer or Harbaugh is irrelevant to what Michigan and Ohio State should do.
Maybe Harbaugh's is harder to replicate because Harbaugh is harder to replicate. Who knows, but I wouldn't get excited about this.
That's not to say that I thought the OP's post was uninteresting. I just don't think it's telling.

I think it may also be easier to get a spread offensive coordinator than a pro-style one. I doubt it tells us much of anything beyond which system he's been around more and which one he thinks he may be able to recruit to(both in terms of coaches and players).

It probably fits personnel better. Their JR QB, Perry Hills ran for over 100 yards in three straight games, including 170 against OSU. Plus, if they can hold on to him, Dwayne Haskins, is still committed to Maryland. He's listed as a Pro Style Quarterback, but he's still pretty athletic for the QB position.
December 4th, 2015 at 3:49 PM ^
The administration wants that type of up tempo offense. That's the reason, not being Meyer slappy.
