OT - You Know Spring is Here When...

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

I love winter as much or more than most, but even I can appreciate the fact that spring is basically here, on time, this year.   Among the signs up north that it really is here:

1.  There is almost no snow on the farm, and all of it will be gone by tomorrow.

2.  Thunder is rolling along by the house....in March.

3.  The spring peepers were out last night for the first time.  If you've never heard them, it is a symphony put on by these little frogs who come out by the hundreds down by the pond.  It is easily one of my favorite spring/summer sounds:

4.  The barn pump didn't freeze this year.  That's kind of a big deal b/c when it does, the kids have to huck 5 gal pails of water down to the livestock a few times a day.  Good work for them, but the past two winters it's been 5 months of frozen pump.

And Your signs of spring are......?

Go blue tonight - Tip-off @ 9:10!

When we make our annual spring trip to the cabin up north we take a night hike to the swamp just to take in the sounds. It can get so loud that I've had a hard time hearing my bro talk. We used take our instruments down with us to rock out and do a swamp jam until the drunk friend who can't control himself tripped and knocked my buddies keyboad into the swamp. Before that many good times were had. I think the frogs loved us.

Peepers. I'm surrounded by ponds. The wet smell off the bay is a good thing too.

And my dog going psychotic during t storms.

Nice post EM.

on the field at The Spring Game. Oh....peepers. My bad. Yes, them, too---I've been hearing them since last Tuesday evening. And thunderstorm-related power outages, as mine was out from 2am until shortly before 8 this morning. Almost caused me to miss HARBAUGH on Mike and Mike!

Oberon comes out. Don't drink much of it anymore, but I think it is pretty clearly the official start of spring.

This is very subjective and definitely depends on the person.

I'm moving to California this year and probably will be back eventually, but seriously the only part of Michigan I could see myself living in long term would be Ann Arbor. Metro Detroit is just so bland, Lansing is god-awful, and GR is nice but definitely not my taste.

don't miss cal for one nano-second.  glad for my time there, great experiences, but i am so glad to be home.

and yeah, homeboy is not slinging any rock cocaine when the snow plows are out.  and they aren't shooting many people either.   when the weather gets warm in socal, its time for homicides.  had my share for a few lifetimes.

and been listening to them singing at dusk ever since. Not a bird-watcher, but few birds have a better voice. But I also have been enjoying the loud squawk of red-winged blackbirds the last few days. Their "noise" means summer isn't far away, either.
