OT - You Know Spring is Here When...

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

I love winter as much or more than most, but even I can appreciate the fact that spring is basically here, on time, this year.   Among the signs up north that it really is here:

1.  There is almost no snow on the farm, and all of it will be gone by tomorrow.

2.  Thunder is rolling along by the house....in March.

3.  The spring peepers were out last night for the first time.  If you've never heard them, it is a symphony put on by these little frogs who come out by the hundreds down by the pond.  It is easily one of my favorite spring/summer sounds:

4.  The barn pump didn't freeze this year.  That's kind of a big deal b/c when it does, the kids have to huck 5 gal pails of water down to the livestock a few times a day.  Good work for them, but the past two winters it's been 5 months of frozen pump.

And Your signs of spring are......?

Go blue tonight - Tip-off @ 9:10!

the odor of fresh skunk roadkill!

When UM Football starts spring practice!

When you can see the lawn green overnight after a good soaking rain.

When you can hear the honking of those obnoxious canadian geese. (It must be their mating season.)

When I feel inspired to kayak my favorite portion of the Clinton. (on class II whitewater in Rochester Hills & Rochester. Did it yesterday!)

When you see all the fisherman fishing for steelhead (on the Clinton).

I like to eat fish. Its fun to catch them and they are certainly pretty. But my grandmother lives just off a tiny stream in Wexford county. Its so much work fishing for these tiny little fish that don't taste that good anyway. Black flies, brambles, mosquitoes, bees, spider webs, sweat. Thanks, I will pass. I go once a year to remind me why I don't go more often.

Spring is my favorite season by far (weather-wise). Obviously autumn is a better time of year because football is around, but nothing beats spring weather.

The Masters tournament is coming, March Madness starts tomorrow, and the NHL and NBA playoffs are almost here. This is a great time of year indeed.

When I can walk the Lakeshore Trail without freezing my tuchus off. Sunny, clear, and beautiful skies. The days are longer and it's not too hot and not too cold.

when I have trouble waking up early in the morning, because of daylight saving. XtraM, that sounds like a great environment to raise kids in. I often daydream about leaving corporate America and buying a farm. Then I realize I don't know anything about farming, and I imagine all the hard work. Maybe someday...

I can't believe people like the sound of those damn frogs. So many are at my house I don't even hear them anymore. When company comes over they are amazed by the volume and I still don't even notice.

In my little world, the first day of Spring is the first day of the NCAA tournament.

Spring comes early this year!  And it's 70 degrees outside in DC to add to the festivities.

Starting in the early 80's.
Back then for whatever reason (government funding, an abundance of facilities etc.?)
Kalamazoo had more mental patients per capita than any city in the U.S.

There were dozens of facilities and thousands of patients, and a large portion of the funding ended in the spring and the hospitals/clinics would have a "mass release" of patients.

Many were unfortunately homeless as well, and just seemed to always congregate downtown.
I lived right on a busy feeder street leading into downtown and always spents a lot of time on my apartment's front porch.

Like the salmon returning to Capistrano, spring in Kalamazoo always meant a steady stream of mumbling, shreiking, under-medicated people slowly wandering down my street towards the center of the city.

my semi-standoffish dog was always out there with me, and never once minded the parade of unbalanced individuals that went by, some even stopped to pet him.

But every Jehovah's witness or born-again bible thumper that tried that set foot on our pavers was instantly chased back with a snarl.

man I loved that dog.

When the sliding barn door freezes shut we have to lead the horse through the people door, unsaddled, then put the saddle on in the ring. She does not enjoy this process. I do not enjoy it because it's my job to carry the saddle up the hill and western saddles are freakin heavy.
