OT: would you take Suggs over Cade #1 overall?

Submitted by tspoon on April 3rd, 2021 at 11:37 PM

I know Cunningham has been a near-unanimous candidate to go first in the draft.  His physical traits/abilities and the way he can dictate the game are all impressive.

That being said, give me Suggs with that pick. The guy just has it.  The things he’s doing (not just that last shot) lead me to think that absent injury he will go down as one of the greats.

Cade is just a silky smooth player who has literally every tool at his disposal. He simply looks like a godly talent.

But as you say, Suggs has *it*. I'd be happy with either for the Pistons but having a point guard like that could be invaluable.

Chauncey? Hell no. Outside of his run with the Pistons he had a pretty nondescript career. Jalen Suggs looks like a young John Wall. He has this thing a lot of these kids have where he has a dominant side (he rarely goes left) but he does have that "it" factor. Cunningham is very talented and tall, but I would take Suggs.

Juzang is clutch but will be neutralized in the league as NBA defenses can combat his combo of length and shooting 1-1.  Love his calm and cool ability to get the shot he wants and he can be a really good player, but he translates to a Kyle Kuzma level talent based on size, handle and speed.

Suggs has something special, has a Dwayne Wade vibe of outplaying his size and ability to slash.  Like Wade, he isn't the best shooter coming in.  He doesn't seem to have the handle or explosion that Wade had coming into the league though.  Suggs gives me the vibe of a healthy Oladipo, smart, athletic player that can only get better if he improves his shot and things fall correctly.

He certainly is great, but in regards to that shot last night, I am not sure about that bank shot from half court.

He did some good things on that play, got the ball, got a good look and was aware of the clock and all . . . but a crazy hard angled bank is just pretty much luck in my opinion, and really more of sign the shot was pretty off target.

Which is why it is hard for me to list that as a "greatest game ending ever" label Jim Nantz was trying to promote.

East German Judge gives it an 7.  Sorry.  Great game though.

We have no idea if Hayes is is a shitty player because he’s been injured most of the year, but he has shown promise. Plus, comparing football to basketball is silly considering you start 2 CBs and it isn’t unheard of to use 2 back-to-back first round picks on CBs as the idea would be to draft 2 starters. It is nearly unheard of to use two top 7 picks in the nba for the same position in back-to-back years.

To answer the OP's question, Cade is probably better but Jalen Suggs would be a heckuva consolation price.

As a Golden State Warriors fan, I'll be happy as long as we end up with at least Jalen Suggs.

There's a persistent belief that the Warriors are stealth tanking so that they get 2 top-5 picks in this draft. (Besides our 1st round pick, we also have Minny's pick which will convey as long as it ends up outside the top 3.)

In retrospect, it's clear that the Warriors fucked up by passing on LaMelo Ball and taking an athletic Hassan Whiteside...err...James Wiseman.

LaMelo Ball had already amassed 600+ points, 200+ rebounds, and 200+ assists in half a NBA regular season. Look up the names in NBA history who have done that in their rookie season. That list is filled with names like Magic Johnson and Penny Hardaway. "Oops." Meanwhile, Wiseman has played like a scrub at times. (He needs to improve by leaps and bounds if he wants to be on the Warriors in 5 years.)

2021 Draft gives the Warriors a chance to correct their mistake in the 2020 Draft.

Depends. Do the Warriors decide and commit to the tank? If so, then there's a strong chance...

Warriors are currently under 0.500 and can say "Fook it. We're not a contender. One run that will fizzle out during the playoff play-in games is not worth potentially having 2 top 5 picks and maximizing our championship window around the Splash Brothers."

I would be lying if I said this thought hasn't crossed my mind...

But we trust in Joe Lacob's leadership. He turned the Warriors from a laughing stock to a dynasty. But in time we'll find out if it was just pure luck or if there was some vision and savvy skill involved...

"Whiteside and Winston’s game are nothing alike. Like at all."

I would be inclined to take your post more seriously if you would get the name right but you didn't. It's Wiseman.

And Wiseman's best attributes are his Tarzan-esque / statuesque body and his crazy athleticism.

That said, no comparison is perfect. Yes, Whiteside is more of a back-to-the-basket, defensive anchor type while Wiseman is more of a face-up player. But Whiteside lacks awareness and game feel. Warriors are finding the same out about Wiseman.

I’m not sure how I typed that wrong. It isn’t even close to the same name either. There aren’t even any Winston’s in the nba other than Cassius, and I don’t even think he’s on a roster at this point.

Either way, I’m still not understanding the comparison. You just described two completely different types of players. Wiseman faces up, can dribble, actually has a midrange game and can shoot from deep. Whiteside plays with his back to the basket, does nothing but rebound and dunk, and doesn’t go beyond 5 feet from the basket. The only thing similar about them is their size. You wouldn’t gameplan the same for them. One of them is a 10 year vet the other is a rookie. One was pretty irrelevant and the other was the #1 recruit and widely known as one of the best players in the draft. The only thing you mentioned that was similar was their lack of awareness on the court and even that is a ridiculous comparison considering one of them has played in more than 400 NBA games and the other in 35

I agree, still way too early to give up on Wiseman. He's shown some good flashes and has a lot of potential obviously.

The Warriors will give him the coaching and put him in the position to succeed. Putting up numbers in Charlotte is one thing, trying to fit in with Dray and Curry while taking everyone's best shot is another.

Ball is good but people may forget Tyreke Evans was named ROY over Curry - here in Northern California it seemed to be a tossup on who was better. crazy to think about now...

Seriously? This is why they don’t let fans draft. The guy hit a Hail Mary and suddenly he’s the top pick? He was fairly average tonight, and has been Gonzaga’s third best player. Cunningham by a mile.

This is why I don’t understand all the “it” talk about Suggs. He is on a team with 2 other guys who will be drafted, one probably in the lottery. OK State was good because of Cunningham, so obviously he has “it.” Gonzaga was a more talented team...it didn’t have anything to do with Suggs having some sort of “it” factor

You know you are a big, huge, serious basketball nutjob fanboy when you watch "a bunch of G League games".  You know that characterization doesn't come close to fanboy truth when you freely admit  to "revisit" G League games before the draft.

Gotdamn, Frank!!!  LOL!!!

I think Suggs (and Juzang) are having those types of tournament games that define winners. Both have led their teams to victories. It reminds me of Kemba Walker, Shabazz Napier, and painfully Donte DiVincenzo in their tournaments. I don’t remember them being high pick projections, but the tourney helped them. They balled their way higher up the draft board. And kemba has been a superstar. Winners have that “it” factor you mention. I’d take Suggs.
