There's no doubt about it, he deserves it. Has the numbers and is a first ballot HOF.

Detroit loves him, hoist ye old 91 into the rafters.  It'd be cool, maybe give out some bobbleheads and a towel to wave around to commemorate the occasion.

but Federov was the best player on the ice for several of those years.  He seemed a bit flakey and got a little Hollywood, but there was no denying what an amazing player he was.

I was privileged to have access to excellent Wings tickets from '95 - '98. Federov was one of the best players I have ever seen in person and was the center piece of those championship teams.

He is one of top-10 Red Wings of all-time. Period. Konstantinov's 16 should not be retired but kept permanently out of circulation. Zetterberg and Datsyuk will not have their numbers retired unless they win another Cup, and even then it's probably 50-50.

91 should most definitely be retired. Anyone else wearing it would look wrong and the year he held out, he also lead the league in playoff scoring, if I remember correctly. The guy could and did do it all. He made his name in Detroit and spent his prime here and was the best player on the team during those runs. Lindsay and Sawchuck both left the Wings for various reasons and Lindsay left on bad terms, but that didn't stop their numbers from going up.

Based on his production, there's no question his number should be retired. But I thought it was kind of weird when he was courting that teenage Russian tennis star.

saw a tweet earlier that said that Richards has asked for 91, but Holland is "hesitant" about giving it to him...possibly bc they are planning to retire it this season

But the fact that he left Detroit mostly because he wanted to be the big cheese on his team, and didnt like playing second fiddle to guys like Yzerman, Shanny, Lidstrom and some of the other guys makes me not want his number in the rafters. He was great with Detroit and def one of the best on the team, but he wanted to be the man on the team and that wasnt gunna happen with Stevey Y on the same team. I like Federov, and if he would have stayed a little longer I would be all for it. But I don't like how he left and because of that Im not sure he deserves his number in the rafters in Detroit. He needed to stay longer for that honor IMO

I'll go the that game if it happens.  Guy was not Steve Yzerman, but no one was, and he was one of the more underappreciated athletes in Detroit sports history, in my view.  Sure, he left on less-than-perfect terms, but it was a long while ago, and he was a very important part of this franchise getting from good to the Cup.

I don't think #91 should be retired. Federov was a great player, and deserves to be in the HofF, but I don't think he's a Red Wings legend like the other guys who have their number retired. Gordie Howe is considered one of the best players of all time. Abel, Lindsay, and Delvechhio are all legendary Red Wings. Sawchuk is one of the best goalies of all time and held the record for most shutouts until just a few years ago. Yzerman led the team out of the Dead Wings era and into the dynasty they are today. Lidstrom is probably the best defenseman ever (except Bobby Orr).

I just don't think Federov's accomplisments make him a legend with one of the most storied franchises in the NHL, or any sport for that matter. Maybe the Columbus Blue Jackets can retire his number or something.

Lots of chirping in here about the way he left Detroit.  I blame his dad more than anything.  His old man was a helluva helicopter parent and conspiracy theorist.

Also, for all Sergei's offensive prowess, anyone remember when Scotty had him playing 'D'?!
