OT: Who is the greatest athlete from your home town?

Submitted by aa_squared on January 17th, 2022 at 1:11 PM

I saw this topic on another site, so I thought it would be fun if I would bring it here.

I know that the larger cities have multiple GREAT athletes, but feel free to name 1 - 3 athletes, if possible, for the smaller towns/cities.

I'll start it off with:

Hamtramck: Rudy Tomjanovich

So I had a mailing address for Lansing but did not actually live in Lansing. I could easily say Magic Johnson but I won't. Technically John Smoltz is from Warren Michigan but he went to my High School. So I will go with John Smoltz.

Hmm, from River Rouge. A few, all basketball believe it or not.

Willie Betts, mid 60's. Only high school player in Michigan history to play on 4 state champ teams. Went to Bradley University. No pro career that I know of.

Franthea Price. Women's b ball. 2 time first team all american at Iowa in 89 and 90, in the Iowa hall of fame. B1G player of year and scoring champ her senior year. Unfortunately before the WNBA so played overseas.

Brent Darby, Jr. won 2 state titles at Rouge. Went to OSU, all B1G first team his sr year. Played overseas. Tragically died of blood clots at only 30 years old.

My town isn't known for football talent. But on one team a few years before me we had two different high-mid 3* defensive power 5 recruits (actually went to the same school). Both started multiple years and made the NFL. One was drafted 4th round and made a pro bowl and is still bouncing around the league while the other one returned to my hometown to coach high school football, which is a pretty cool full circle IMO.
